This video was a *huge tribute* to Black History in general, of music like Jazz, tap dancing, Swing Dance and legends like Cab Calloway & Nicholas Brothers.
It's kinda similar in how the movie "Cadillac records" payed tribute to the origins of Rock & Roll with Chuck Berry, & Muddy Waters.
I love the Nicholas Brothers ... Those were special times, and those names as well as others like them, paved the way & pioneered many different styles of music created in America, while still being oppressed.

Cyd Charisse (older woman in glitter red dress) was a dancing legend in the 50’s and 60’s, iconic in Singin in the Rain and Silk Stockings. Some of the choreo was done by the legendary Michael Kidd who directed Guys and Dolls among many other classic film musicals.

Jack, this video was much deeper than you realized. Janet was paying homage to early 1900s Legends-Cab Calloway (Yellow suit), The Nicholas Brothers, and Cyd Charlize (woman in the red dress dancing with Janet in one of the scenes), whom were all included in the video. I believe all of that went over your head lol. Also, when Janet was waiting for Cab Calloway and his date (her twin) to get out of the limousine, she was pushed down, which made her watch snap from her pocket (how she lost it). You talked too much through this one, so missed much of Artistry . Fun Fact: Aaliyah credited this as her Favorite Janet Jackson video.

Yes you finally did "Alright"!!! My 2nd favorite song off the album. The video is amazing and now you see why Janet and Michael are known as music video blueprints! They set the standards for videos. There's a reason why Janet was the highest paid artist of the 90s even with Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Michael, and other huge talented artists. Janet was in a league of her own. On another note listen to how much deeper Janet's vocals are. She's very versatile. I love it! You'll see a lot of references to her videos and performances and even Beyonce on her Formation tour referenced Janet's "Alright" video and Beyonce even dressed as Rhythm Nation for Halloween. Just so you know at the end it shows that Janet and her 2 friends were actually homeless and everything that happened was a dream. Thumbs up again!

I’d love to see your reaction to the full Rhythm Nation short film. This was off of that project too . You’ll notice that she always balances the serious with fun pieces. In the RN album, there is an interlude where she ask after delivering the serious content “get the point?.....good.....let’s dance” so this was that moment. She wanted to feature some if the great entertainers that inspired her to perform, Cab Calloway, being the featured. That’s the guy in yellow looking like Jim Carey in the “Mask”. The symbolism of the video. She dreamed of going back in time to see him perform. She performs along side him and some if the greats that inspired her. She loses her watch in the cab. Cab Calloway returns the watch to her at his present age. Kind of suggesting that it was her time to be the entertainer that we know now.

The guy in the yellow zoot suit was a guy playing the younger Cab Calloway. The guy at the very end in the yellow zoot suit was the real Cab Calloway. In the video when she got out of the car, you saw where her watch was stuck and broke off her chain. The end of the video is to show you that she and her two companions are actually homeless people who were dreaming of what life might have been like in Cab Calloway's heyday (the 1930s). I've always loved her and Michael's videos. They always spent so much money on the production and they didn't get paid for it, since music videos were made to promote their albums. I miss these times so much.

Jack, I appreciate your videos and respect for artists like Janet. As a self-described Michael and Janet Jackson expert she paid a lot of homage to Old School greats like the Nicholas brothers and Cab Calloway in this video. Lots of detail and lots of historic figures to look into...cheers!

Lots of historical figures in this video. Cab Calloway was a icon and a huge jazz artist during the early 30s, 40s and 50s. That style of suite Janet was was wearing was very popular during this era and I believe it was called a zoot suite. FYI, Janet lost the watch exiting the taxi. The young guy in the yellow suit was a young version of Cab Calloway as he helped Janet from the limo to the red carpet. At the end of the video, an old version of Cab Calloway wearing the same yellow suit returns the pocket watch to Janet as she slept with her friends at the bus stop at the end of the video.

The guy in the yellow suit was the"Famous and Great Cab Callaway. He was The FAMOUS CONDUCTOR during the Golden era of Hollywood! He was among those who brought fame to black talent in Hollywood! Cab Callaway, The Nicholas Brothers, Dorothy Dangridge, Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte, Cicely Tyson, just to name a few, were the ones who paved the way for the talents of the people of color. Notice that I said people of color because those talents cover more than just African Americans. It covered Latinas, Samoans, Native Americans, Mongolian and so many more! The world is mainly comprised of people of color. There are people who see themselves as White People but are in actuality people of color. Causation people are Dutch, The English or British, the Irish, the Australians, also, South Africa which has a mosaic of cultures that became a biodiversity land. The people of color in South Africa experienced great pain after The Dutch came into power there, much like the South here in America. May we ever grow to understand and respect the diversity in one another!

Fun side notes: This video is so huge to dancers, because as you see, not only did Janet employ hundreds of dancers for the video, but the fact that she showcased legends Cab Calloway, Cyd Charisse and The Nicholas Brothers in the video was just incredible. They were all film and dance legends from the 40s and 50s. Cab Calloway is the "yellow dude".

Cab Calloway was one of the pioneers of Black entertainment in the early 20th century. This movie pays homage to musicals from that area, which included artists such as Cab Calloway, who portrays himself in the last segment, giving Janet her pocket watch back (which she lost in the car, where the younger Cab Calloway offered her that free ride in). The music video also features the likes of Cyd Charisse, a famous actress and dancer who danced with the likes of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. You also see the very talented dancing Nicholas Brothers, who were also famous in the early 1900's.
Glad you enjoyed the music video. There is an extended version also that features rapper Heavy D making a cameo rap in the middle of the song. Definitely worth checking out!

This was phenomenal when it came out. She was fairly new at the time but was already a superstar and everyone flipped out because she included Cab Calloway who was such a pioneer and died not too long after. It would be like if today Lady Gaga did something with Fred Astaire or Chris Brown with James Brown if those artists were alive. Or Beyonce with Tina Turner since she's still living. It was excellent but the epitome of paying homage. So dope

This video is a tribute the the jazz era in New York. It has a lot of legendary cameo appearances from that era. Janet is known as a dancer so the tribute is paying homage to the great dancers of that time. Cab Calloway is in the yellow. Cyd Charrise is the lady with the red dress who came out of the store, and the Nicolas Brothers were the two guys who were tap dancing in the alley (7:20). All of them were phenomenal and laid the groundwork for alot of artist today especially those who dance. There should be videos of each of them on youtube. Cab Calloway is a jazz ICON who has been copied by and influence may who came after! Great reaction.
