      The same person that directed Michael’s ♪In the Closet♪ in 1992, Herb Ritts did this video for Janet in 1990. He was the known for filming in black and white and sepia colours. Michael was always studying his little sister and taking from her (in a family way). She was even the first to incorporate rap with Heavy D in ♪Alright♪ released in 1990 while Michael used rap and Heavy D until ♪Jam♪ in 1992. Michael said in many interviews that he was wary of rap as it was not so main stream or respected. But Janet didn’t care and loved black urban sound and was a risk taker. Both Janet, first, w/ ♪Love Will Never Do♪ and George Michael MV ♪Freedom! '90♪ weeks later in October of 1990 merged the modeling world with the music world. Janet’s video had male models Djimon Hounson and Antonio Sabàto Jr., while George Michael had Naomi Campbell etc. But technically George was the first to bring the modeling world to music in 1987 with his MV ♪Father Figure♪ featuring Tania Coleridge. But Janet was a trail blazer for even Michael Jackson but people only like to look at what Michael has done for Janet but not for what Janet has done for Michael with her pushing the envelope and exploring into sounds and arts that were not yet a sure success at the time.

    Herb Ritts directed both this video that came out in 1991 and Michael's In the Closet (1992) so you comparing them is spot on. Also this is important video for her evolution since it's the first time she showed any sort of skin in a music video.

  • @nevermindkey
    @nevermindkey Před 4 lety +79

    Michael’s In the Closet video was inspired by this video. When Michael went into the studio to do his Dangerous album in ‘91, his new producer, Teddy Riley, asked him to write a list of music that inspires him to use as a blueprint for the album. The first thing on that list was Janet’s Rhythm Nation 1814 album, which had come out in ‘89.

      nevermind. key The black panther concept from the “Black or White” video is another example. The live versions of “Jam” look eerily like “Rhythm Nation”. There’s a picture of Michael in all black with a black panther. There was a picture of Janet 2 years earlier wearing all black and with a black panther for her “Black Cat” UK single cover. The social consciousness of the album. Not to mention the New Jack Swing sound. Michael borrowed a lot from the “Rhythm Nation” project.

      lucion del mar You know? I would say that he did. “Dangerous” was probably as “RN1814” as it got for him without looking like a total ripoff. “Dangerous” is so much better than “Bad” in my opinion. I feel that there are things that Michael could do that Janet could not and vice versa. Michael couldn’t possibly do an album like 1993’s “janet.” and I think there are certain things Michael could do that Janet couldn’t do. Janet feels more at home being sensual than Michael does and you can tell.

    Jack, seriously thank you! Thank you so much for this this is my favorite Janet Jackson song, and like I told you she's my favorite artist so that's saying a lot. What I was hoping you'd touch on was the backgrounds, part of what makes this song incredible for me is the harmonies. Let me tell you, Janet's background stacking is so strong & thick it sounds like a group (I think she & Brandy are big with that in that they mostly are the ones doing most of their backgrounds). Like everyone's telling you she's singing the 1st verse in her lower register because it was considered for being a duet with Prince, Johnny Gill or Ralph Tresvant, so they asked her to sing the 1st verse like a dude would. But Jimmy & Terry loved her voice like that so much they scrapped the duet idea before asking any of the guys. This song is pure joy & happiness, and it really shows off her vocal range, Im MOST happy you caught her high note at the end, Janet's high falsetto is 1 notch short of whistle, but she doesn't go that high often, she's always been VERY sensitive about her voice, so she knows it well and how to use it.

      In fact, the most lighter song of the album was ''Escapade'' and this song was more dance-pop, compared of ''Miss You Much'', ''Alright'' or ''Rhytmn Nation'' then theses three songs turned more in RnB. Because ''Love Will Never Do'' was hugely Pop/RnB. This song was the point between Rhytmn Nation 1814 (Love Will Never Do was the last single of the album) and Janet, because this music video included a new image of Janet Jackson.

    Herb ritts was a freaking dream director. He always did his videos at the beach. And he also did Mariah's video for my all and Britney Spears video for don't let me be the last to know and nsyncs gone. I love how he captured the beauty of the artist and the concept of the song and put it into a music video. All his videos were magical. 💙

      @mxlbabe Don't Believe that B.S. In fact it was scheduling with Prince. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are Friends of Prince they go way back being that both producers were band mates of Morris Day of the Group "The Time" and Prince Day with the Revolution in Minneapolis. Hence giving Janet a More Minneapolis sound with her 3rd album Control in 1986. She talks about it in her book. Its also mentioned in her linear notes for her "Design of A Decade" Album. When we had CDs

    Nice man! I think you nailed it with the comments about her voice. Not the strongest vocalist but one of the most versatile. This is in my top 5 fav janet songs. I remember reading somewhere that this song is about interracial romance. It was also the last #1 (1991) from the rhythm nation album making the album span 3 years.
    Another live performance of hers to react to is "Again" from the Velvet rope tour. She showcases a "belt" that she rarely does but is well capable of doing.

    This song is about interracial love. Most songs on her Rhythm Nation 1814 album have messages. Most are obvious, like Rhythm Nation, The Knowledge, State of the World, Livin’ In A World (They Didn’t Make)... but this song and Escapade have very subtle messages. This one being mixed relationships and Escapade being about women taking control and taking men out instead of waiting for men to take us out and have control.
