"Something About You" is a hit song by the British band Level 42, released in 1985. It's one of their most popular and enduring tracks, known for its catchy melody, funky bassline, and memorable chorus.
The song was written by the band's lead vocalist and bassist Mark King, along with keyboardist Mike Lindup and guitarist Phil Gould. It was included on their sixth studio album, "World Machine," which was a commercial success and helped propel Level 42 to international fame.
"Something About You" reached high chart positions in various countries, including the UK, where it peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's success contributed significantly to Level 42's popularity in the mid-1980s.
The song's lyrics describe the feeling of infatuation and the irresistible pull of attraction towards someone. Its upbeat tempo and infectious groove have made it a staple of 1980s pop music and a favorite among fans of the genre.
"Something About You" remains a beloved classic and is often featured on 1980s nostalgia playlists and radio stations. Its enduring popularity has solidified its status as one of Level 42's signature songs.

To this day, I am a die-hard Level 42 fan, and have been since this song. The entire album, "World Machine," which contains this track, is stellar. Lots of mentions here for "Lessons in Love" & "Children Say," both of which are excellent. Some of their most interesting stuff is earlier in their repertoire, including an album produced by members of EWF. Thanks for giving this some well-deserved love!

There was a slightly longer version that really accentuated the bass, and they used to play it on the R&B station in St. Louis back in the day. Not sure if that happened elsewhere, but this was a huge record in STL, for everyone. It crossed a lot of genres, pop, R&B, college new wave rock, adult contemporary. Seemed like every station was playing this cut.

This was, and still is my #1 pop song from the first time I heard it and saw the video at 5 years old. An irresistible riff, harmonies between bassist and lead vocalist Mark King ( who sings the verses) and keyboardist and second vocalist Mike Lindup (who handles the choruses in his heavenly falsetto).
I definitely agree that this tune needs to be appreciated more. It peaked in the top ten (#7 for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100) in late May and early June 1986, along with their second US hit "Lessons in Love" (#12) in 1987, but they disappeared from the US charts after that and mostly performed in their native UK, Holland, and Germany. Sadly, "Something About You" doesn't get mentioned with other '80s tunes like "Take on Me" and "Come on Eileen," but when reactors such as yourselves discover (or re-discover) it, you realize just how great it is.
You should definitely check out their early live instrumentals like "Mr. Pink," "43," and "The Pursuit of Accidents," as well as their early songs like "Love Games," "Weave your Spell," and "The Sun goes down (Living it Up).

This song has a nice funky hook accentuated by that thumbed bass line. Some of the better music in the “new wave” genre had at least an undercurrent of R&B and funk running through it. More songs like that would be “One Thing Leads To Another” by The Fixx, “Once In A Lifetime” or “Burning Down The House” by the Talking Heads, “She Blinded Me With Science” or “Hyperactive” by Thomas Dolby, “Promises, Promises” by Naked Eyes, and “Come Back And Stay” by Paul Young. Not a complete list, by any stretch, but those are the ones I can recall right off the top of my head. And the GOAT, Prince, was a master at mixing new wavey synths and electric drums with some of the best funk of the 80’s. Great reaction!
