The crazy thing is the music and lyrics took you through that story line but the music video (so brilliantly directed) never did. This was the video that I first saw Janet in. I was only 4 and I guess I was at the time deciding that dancing and performing was my destiny. The effects in the video were so complex for my young mind I was blown away. I really thought that world existed somewhere lol but it made me a visionary dancer. Thank you Janet

This is one of my all-time favorite Janet/Jam/Lewis lyrics/productions. As you noted, the amount of layers is staggering, and you can blink and miss if them if you don't pay close attention. "Doesn't Really Matter's" lyrics were actually based on a poem Janet wrote, discarded, then recovered later. The soundtrack version for The Nutty Professor II was released in 2000; the album version from 2001's All For You is slightly different and has added elements

And Ok this is why Im hooked on your reactions because this song is apart of my being, this was my gateway song into loving her, and it was from seeing her in Nutty Professor 2 (which as you picked up on is where this song was 1st released and recorded for, it ended up being a unexpected #1, and it's also her 8th album all for you which was released the next year), but your breakdown brings something I never was able to pay attention to because I got introduced to it as a kid who didn't notice, all the progression and changes and speeds.
