For someone to hear another person screaming for help, in distress, and do NOTHING is obscene and a cowards way. Lives can be saved if people only react. We were camping once and heard a couple arguing. Next we heard her screaming for help. We called 911 and the police were there within 3 minutes. He was stabbing and choking her. She lived and I hope, got away from that psychopath that called himself her husband.
You say that but the VAST majority of people would do the same - people are generally cowards and will act in self preservation if it means ignoring a possibly violent situation

I’m just really failing to understand how someone can say they clearly heard a “blood curdling scream” and “a woman screaming help help help me” and just go on about their day. May Gretchen be at peace in her final resting place.
That baffles my mind and sends chills up my spine. She even told the press as if it was no big deal. Zero remorse for her inactions. And zero empathy. Cold.

As a survivor of domestic abuse, the one time I dared to scream as I was pulled by my hair to the top of the stairs,was the last physical abuse that monster did. Only because I screamed,and a neighbour heard me. And the neighbour acted. Don’t ignore real screaming..we instinctively know a scream of fear and pain. Could have been a different outcome…..neighbour.
40 this June... And a 2x domestic violence survivor. I screamed out for help in the apts I lived in with the human monster... Someone heard me and called the cops... I think about them and am grateful for them everyday. NEVER HESITATE TO CALL THE POLICE IF YOU BELIEVE SOMEONE'S LIFE IS IN DANGER! YOU MIGHT SAVE A LIFE!!

Pray you both got well in your mind and away from monster's. One thing I try to tell anyone that is trying to leave is NEVER let them know you are leaving and if possible where you have gone.
Gretchen was my teacher in NJ before she moved to FL. Middle school. I was devastated to see her photo and story on CZcams last yr. I remember when I was in middle school, she had just gotten her first teaching job. She also was a student teacher for me as well before hand. She was a beautiful, fun but respected teacher among her students. I wish this man, I won't even say his name, never gets out. It says he will be in his 80s, but her daughter will never see her mom. Prayers to her family. I can't say enough about Mrs. Crane (her Maiden name, bc it is NOT Anthony).

@NFS305 just saw this... I'm not sure. She was Gretchen Crane and then O'Keefe when married another teacher in our school. They did end up getting divorced so she possibly had already done the whole process once to change her name back to her Maiden name, Crane. Plus I am thinking that bc she has a daughter, she kept it for purposes of having the same last name as her~

@@ryleenikola5734That is why my mom didn't change hers back after divorcing my dad. She had been divorced before and had 2 children with first husband and they had a different last name. She said she wanted to go back to her maiden name but didnt want all of us to have different last names.
@@NFS305Most don't. My mother in law has been divorced for 15 years and still goes by her married name, and he even remarried. She has three children, 2 boys and a girl. The two boys obviously have the same last name and so do three of her grand children. My mother remarried 7 years after my father passed, and she didn't change her last name to her new married name for a few years because of my sister and I. My aunt also still goes by her last husband's name, and she didn't even have children by him.
I had a neighbor one time around 1 am screaming. At the time l didn’t know it was her. I called the police to report because l didn’t see anyone but l could hear the screams. Eventually, the Police came. I stepped outside and by that time l could see it was her. She was having some sort of reaction to some medicine. She did get some help. The next day her Dad was so appreciative because it could had gone wrong for her if l hadn’t called for help. We are all here to help one another.

This is my friend. She was the lifeguard at our high rise apartment in the early '90's, and she babysit our daughter (who is now 26 years old) when she was attending classes. What a beautiful girl she was and the world is less of a place with Gretchen gone 😥

It depends on where you live. You could be labeled a snitch if you live in a bad neighborhood. You call the police and the police will come to YOUR door in sight of the criminals for details. The court papers then name you as a witness with your private information revealed. The police will offer you no protection and the criminals know this. A lot of criminals believe that dead people tell no tales. We need better policing period!
Maybe she thought someone else would call the police, or she feared reprimand from a killer, or being afraid to overreact. Better always call to check if everyone is ok. Not sure she’s a cold blooded bystander.

Absolutely unbelievable that the neighbor that heard the blood curdling screams and hearing her fighting for her life didn't call the police. We as humans have to be more engaged than that. It might not have saved her life, but he probably would have been caught sooner.

The HUGE amount of survivor's guilt I would have every single day for the rest of my life because I heard a woman scream in fear and pain AND STILL CHOSE NOT TO CALL 911 is enough to haunt me right now...dang...

Precisely! And abusers use that to their advantage. They tell victims that no one will hear them or if they do, no one will call the police and in fact the abusers brainwash their victims about calling police in general it becomes a “violation of loyalty” BS. Bottom line… let’s break this mindset of not sticking our nose in someone else’s business if it means it can potentially save a life!! 🙏🏼

Agreed. Honestly charge them with obstruction of justice or hindering an investigation. Something! If you hear something or see something SAY something. I bet they had to blur her face bc knowing that she missed the chance to potentially save this woman’s life, she probably feels a lot of shame and guilt, as she should and I assume she doesn’t want to be known. Even if she had called and they weren’t able to save her, she could have known she did everything she could to help someone clearly in dire need of it. Very disappointing and I will just never understand why she wouldn’t have just called???

Maybe you're new to True Crime, but that's sadly very common. In many cases, people don't call police when they hear or even see things. In many cases, if a woman escapes, or survives, & reaches the road to look for help, most cars will keep driving, though one person may call 911 as they continue driving. And its so common, that we tell women that if they are attacked, they shouldn't scream rape, they should scream fire, because that is a danger for everyone & makes people more likely to take action.

I’m aware that people don’t act in moments like this, many don’t take the opportunity to call 911 in suspicious situations but this case in particular is special in my opinion. The neighbor GROSSLY missed an opportunity to save someone’s life and I believe most people would call 911 if they heard the things she heard.

A few days ago, I heard a child screamed. This was not the first time, so I didn't hesitate to call the police. The boy is about 10 years old. His family members abuse him.
Since the police got involved, I have not heard anything.
That neighbour failed the victim in this case. Sometimes, when we hear screams, they are cries for help.
Something similar just happened in my town. A girl went missing for 10days. A neighbor had said she heard screaming from the apartment near here. She said she didn't want to bother to call because it's usually nothing. That girl was found on the side of the road inside a coffee table that had a hinged lid. Her coffee table that was missing from her apartment. I can't fathom why that neighbor didn't call. If called and it ended up being someone setting up surround sound and didn't feel guilty for calling.

He had an existing criminal background prior to all this. Yet - neither his employer - nor his wife Gretchen - conducted a background check before hiring him or marrying him?
That's appalling.
This husband committed a horrific crime. A female that lives nearby, hears Gretchen screaming and yelling “stop, your hurting me” and choses to ignores this. Not only is this shocking, but it is deeply disturbing on so many levels.
Did the neighbor that failed to report the screaming know David Anthony? If yes, I wonder what her relationship with him is? Some states have a “ failure to report a crime” law. I hope the authorities look into this.
I don't understand how someone could ignore that. I couldn't live with myself!
My ex pushed me to the bed and said, "I'm going to make sure you never do that again!" and started pounding me. I had hit him in the back of the head with my wallet because he said something rude to me. Luckily, a neighbor called and police came fast. He was still hitting me. To this day, I don't know who called but I am so grateful! He was arrested and put in jail.

I’m uncomfortable with your remark “you don’t do that.” It sounds like this guy had a lot of people fooled. She did everything she could to protect herself. I left an abusive marriage after 14 years and my ex stalked me and I finally had to move to a big city in another State and rebuild my life when I was 40 years old. Statistics show the most dangerous time for a woman in a controlling and/or abusive marriage/relationship is the first 2 years AFTER she leaves.

I'm curious how much of his background was she aware of before she married him and brought him into her home. The more I hear of these stories, the more I think people should pay for a full background check before inviting a stranger turned lover to move into their home.

It's pretty common. Also why women are taught to yell fire not rape if they are being raped. More people are likely to check out a fire.

I mean there are some places in the u.s.a. where calling the police can be an offense. So for example there's some cities where if police are called to the same address or by the same phone number a certain number of times within a year it's like a misdemeanor or something. And sometimes you don't have control or knowledge of how many times people who lived at the address that you live at called

I helped my wife get out of an abusive relationship with her first husband. She stayed until her kids were grown but the hell she lived with was atrocious. She feared for her life daily. We have a beautiful loving relationship. She's a wonderful woman and didn't deserve the hell she lived in.

However, he had no money, no job, no opportunities. He wanted to be accepted back by his ex-wife. For support... her refusal costed her life.😮 He deserves to get rotten in jail😢

I always call. There is once I saw a strange expression from a young lady with a man, and I called the police.I would rather to make a mistake than to let her go and something happens to her. I experienced similar situation when I was attacked on street by a random person, and no one offered help or call for me. It was extremely sad. Just call, everyone!. I wouldn't credit criminals with being intelligent, especially the ones who get caught. I'm shocked he had a head start, was on the road for several days and had only gotten to Las Cruces. I've driven across country multiple times and if I had murdered someone, in those three days, I would have been in Mexico some time in the second day.

In most countries in Europe, the neighbor who heard the cries for help would be punished for not calling the police. What a terrible person this neighbour is! I hope she can't sleep well since she knows she didn't give Gretchen a chance to be saved.
I wouldn't want to live in a country that punishes you for not making a phone call. The fact is, if she lived in one of those countries she wouldn't have admitted to have heard something and not called, and the police wouldn't have had some vital information.

The texts are a red flag immediately. Nobody with a high fever and severe covid symptoms can send text messages that articulate. As her family I would’ve started investigating immediately.

There is no harm in calling the police. If youre wrong, no harm no foul...but if you don't, someone could lose their life. You risk NOTHING by being safe than sorry and calling 911.

Shame on her neighbor to not call the police. It was the very least she could do after hearing someone literally being murdered. It likely wouldn't have saved her life, but it would have saved her family the trauma of believing she was alive.
I think charges should be pressed on individuals that so willfully ignore somebody screaming for their life (in OBVIOUS DISTRESS) or for help and choose to do nothing and go on about their day. There should be consequences for this.
I do not hesitate to call in if something is suspicious. If we put consequences on unresponsiveness though, people will stop admitting they saw or heard anything when questioned. Imagine how difficult this could make it for investigators.

As someone who lost their mother at a young age it’s such a horrible tragedy! She is going to hurt for the rest of her life. No mother to pick out a prom dress, help dress her for her wedding, see her grandchildren grow up! He also robbed the daughter of a life with her mother !! 😢

No offense, but that’s a lot of assumptions you make about the future of the daughter and even the relationship of the mom and daughter. I know my mom didn’t help me pick out my prom dress - I had to pay for it myself. My niece didn’t even get a homecoming or prom because of “covid.” I also never got married, nor had kids. My mom and I have fought like cats and dogs forever, as did my brother and mother. Neither of us have had contact with her for years because of the stress and drama that comes when she was in our lives.
Just remember that when people get murdered, friends and family will say nothing but positive things about the victim. It’s very improper to any speak ill of them. We really don’t know what the future will be for the daughter, nor what her relationship with the mother was like or would have been like when the daughter got older.
My mom died when I was 13, I'm mourning her still at 56 y/o; it never goes away. Since no one took care of us after she died, our (my sister & I) our lives were ruined. No supervision, no guidance, tolerance not love. We weren't protected and were easy pickings for sexual predators.
When my husband beat me up I called my father and asked him to help me. His reply was, "sounds like a personal problem". My mother would have had a very different response.

I don't understand not calling 911 when you hear or see something. I once heard a commotion and in front of my house there was a mob of teens and lying on the ground was a kid being kicked in the head. I yelled, "I'm calling the cops!" hoping it would make them stop while I dialed 911. The cops came and broke it up. How can anyone ignore something potentially worse?
The person messed up when they texted saying, I am on a ventilator! If she was in ICU, she would be unable to text that. Very sad, the evil going on out here. So much for her daughter to go through and the neighbor heard her cry for help and did nothing.

It's not always a good outcome unfortunately. Sometimes they get adopted but even cases where the kids live or one kid I saw as an adult still wasn't sure what happened to his puppy once he was taken after his dad killed his mother. It's a famous crime and his channel is about surviving... Telling detectives his father killed her and his father is in jail still ga lighting him and he reads the letters in videos. He finally met someone who told him he got his dog all those years ago and he started bawling. It's another great video..

It's really such a shame that someone arrested after following teenage girls can only spend a few days in jail. It clearly usually points to a greater intent than just following and stalking, and is often followed by violent behavior like this. I wish we could do more. Prayers to Gretchen's family

Well, without a long list of documented priors, it is difficult for law enforcement or a court to guess at someone's intent and sentenced based on that. On the other end, many corrupt officials would certainly abuse that if it did exist. Besides, many government agencies are filled with pedos (see: DOJ, Department of Education, HHS, IRS...), so some of them have no interest in stopping creeps from creeping.
