He almost kills a woman at 16 out of the blue and was released at 18 since the system thinks that at 18 all bad traits of a person just disappears. Absolutely ridiculous!
That's not what the system thinks. The juvenile system is different than the adult system and when you're in the juvenile system they have to release you at 18 when you become an adult. The two rarely transfer over. Nobody in the juvenile system believed that bad traits just disappeared. It's best to use common sense when considering such matters.
@@zmoore5555 In some states they can hold you until you are 25 for violent crimes. Oregon, Washington since 2018 or so, California, Utah since around 2020, and a couple other states have laws like that. Tennessee is considering a blended sentencing law that would allow people to remain in the system until they turn 25 and then the court would be able to decide on wether they should be sent to the adult system and sentenced as an adult or released. Having a law like that would have helped in this case since as he needed more than 2 years.
@@zmoore5555You seem triggered for no reason and yet you didn't answer the question of why. Why juveniles are released at 18 regardless of their scary crime like this guy did is the question. The system is clearly not working since juveniles are being released and continue their crime. Why is releasing at 18 a must? Does the system believe they stop committing crimes after their 18th birthday? Why don’t they transfer them to the adult facility?
That's typical of the legal system. A 16 year old mass killer would get less than a 18 year old drug dealer.

It’s not an excuse but it’s an explanation. You can’t just abuse someone and think it won’t somehow alter their brain.
It's high time we start understanding the criminal behaviors that inflict longterm/irrefutable damage upon innocent mbrs of society. It is absolutely true, traumas are different and they impact individuals differently. Just bc something falls under the same category, in this instance its child abuse, doesn't mean they are the same. Before folks lose their cool let me be clear, this does NOT in turn "excuse" such behavior. Not even remotely. It's simply a fact that NEEDS to be recognized, that is all. This "lock them up and throw away the key" mentality is not enough to deter such "evil" behavior. It doesn't and shouldn't stop when that cell door closes. We NEED to make the effort to understand more. You cannot begin to come up with preventative measures towards something that we don't better understand. Or rather, refuse to better understand. With knowledge comes power, that is a basic level fact. Ignorance and stubbornness is only perpetuating these unrelenting problems. We can and SHOULD do better for ourselves and each other.

@@edynmertz4734 His abuse happened at 5 years old when the mind is most vulnerable and impressionable. His brain wasn’t even fully developed. Obviously that doesn’t excuse what he has done I have no doubt in my mind he knew it was wrong. People react to trauma differently and thankfully you decided to be good person in spite of your situation.
He got 2 years for stabbing a woman in her back, for no reason at all.

i have always been amazed at some of the things Juveniles can get away with. and also there are A LOT of people in our society that have bleeding hearts and are always willing to make excuses for people.

Many kids who were disciplined like that are fine or seem to be fine, but some are not.
Being abused and/or beaten can trigger mental illness (often those parents are mentally ill themselves) and sadly, sometimes mental illness can lead to violent crimes. Parents can cause a lot of damage to their children.
That being said, I don't think by any means that this should be counted as an excuse - I just wanted to point out cause and effect.
@@MrGrumpyGillsthe vast majority of people who are abused don’t go on to commit murders though. Upbringing affects one’s mentality but free will still exists and he had the ability to choose not to commit the heinous crimes he did.
It doesn't take the majority to commit insane crimes due to a poor upbringing. It just takes a few for us to realize that the abuse we put on children, as adults, can cause some real damage to certain kids. We act as though these shouldn't be excuses, but when a kid commits horrible crimes we all say "where were the parents?" And as soon as those f*cked up kids become adults, we forget all about the horrible upbringing. It's an interesting thing we do as humans.
I'm bipolar and I refuse to let my situation rule me, I was told from a very long time ago that I'm accountable by my dad and what I do is going to be my punishment, I've had my tail tied in knot's and I wear it now as a fashion statement, besides I'm a huge fan of Susan B Anthony, when she was arrested for trying to vote, she was going to be let go because she was a woman and she said I don't want special treatment I want to be treated as a equal. I feel the same way now playing the victim wears out so fast.

I recently watched famous castles on Netflix. The barbaric forms of early torture and execution behind castle walls were difficult to listen to so I muted.
But for the monster that savagely took the lives of these innocent victims, I would make an exception.
These lives would be spared if the judicial system would start keeping these guys in prison for their original sins.
Stabbing a woman at 16, then again? Caught 2xs yet still got out. Anyone that wld of just dug deep into his mind wld have known.

I can't say much without invading her privacy, but I actually knew his wife personally for many years. I have heard a lot of undisclosed information straight from her mouth and I feel a duty to defend her in this situation.
To start with why she didn't speak up, she actually did. They moved around a few places and she actually made some reports over the years, but none were taken seriously. The confession he made about Brandi was made to her almost 15 years after she was killed and she had genuinely thought he was making up a story. He had done it repeatedly over the years.
She is not "special" as some of you rudely asumed. You don't hear it here, but you can find it in some other podcasts about the show: he tortured her. Viciously. Needles, knives, and so much more. All of the horrible torture gave her a speech impediment from the scarring.
She did not leave her daughter anywhere. When they got a divorce she was unable to make enough money to maintain custody. She was working multiple jobs, but because she had been a stay at home wife and mom for the entire marraige, she had no work experience. The jobs she got were all entry level and the courts didn't think it was a suitable home for the child due to the low income and "absent a lot" mom. She tried desperately to get her back from her ex husband but was stonewalled by the courts until the whole serial killer thing came to light.
She has spent every single year since then desperately attempting to help her daughter, even going so far as to go without food to pay for her daughter's therapy.
(I feel I should note here, she had no reason to believe he was doing anything to their daughter. In fact he doted on her. She believed that her daughter was safe in the home and would never have stayed if she had believed she was in danger. Her first hints that something was off was after the divorce, once she lost custody.)
To the people who are blaming her or accusing her of not preventing this, please take a step back and remember you do not have all the information in this case. The media consistantly portrays her as a conspirator because it makes for good television.
You notice how none of the victim's families have blamed her? It's because they were there to hear her whole testimony. You were not. He had her under his thumb for years. He used threats on her life to keep her from escaping and tortured her for much of their marraige. Just because she's alive, doesn't mean she isn't a victim.
She is a wonderful and strong woman who has endured more than you could ever know. Please be kind. She reads your comments.

I would also like to add since a lot of the nay-sayers about her seem to think she wasn't under duress during the marriage:
He used her as a stopwall for his behaviors. He blamed her for his actions and told her it was her fault that he had these horrible thoughts and feelings about women. He told her that if she didn't allow him to torture her that he would do it to other women and that would be her fault. She was totally isolated and was actually trying to prevent him from hurting others by staying. She was not aware that he was hurting other women already.
Thank you for sharing this. That’s horrible. What she went through is heartbreaking. I’m so sorry. I hope her and her daughter are getting the help they need. The fact that they let him back on the streets after his first victim at 16 is scary, especially in light of what the mother showed law enforcement. Disgusting. I wish your friend the best.

The wife is the hero of this story for agreeing to testify against that sadistic POS. Doing so had to be incredibly frightening for her and I commend her courage. I hope she and her daughter are able to heal and move forward.

And nvr reported to police that he murdered and dismembered a child at that! Why would you not say something? And then you let your child live with that monster? I can have some compassion for what she endured but it is a HUGE step to call her a hero. Had she reported what he did to that poor child, those women might be alive today. Not to mention, had they nvr found the man, he'd still be walking the streets killing people. She knew he was a murderer and did nothing. She pretty much had to testify. That's no hero.
So sad for his daughter. These monsters devastate so many lives.
And why did his ex-wife think it was a good idea for their daughter to stay with him?
And imagine what his response would be if asked, how he would feel if someone did this crap to HIS child.

Yep. He was a chronic, severe threat to women, and it was fitting to see multiple women (the judge, prosecutor, ex-wife, his living victims, etc.) make sure he couldn't harm any others.

It's scary that a detective can see this man's past and see his hand written notes of horrendous things he wants to do to women and he's just like "what? Nah not this guy. He was so meek around me." I'm sure this kind of mindset helps killers get away.
Very often people who seem to be meek are in truth antisocial, awkward people that live their lives playing video games and watching movies and shows about superhero`s and horror flicks, and in their sick minds they are part of that world. Because they lack social skills and hate people that are at ease and have friends all over.

Allowed? They didn’t have his DNA on any database. You expect miracles from police officers with a present-day caseload, no cold case detectives & no way of zeroing in on the suspect.
He wasn’t allowed to get away with it! If the state has enough to press charges they will! They didn’t have his DNA matched bc they had to get his DNA from the glass!
He didn't but they were the only ones they could prove. If you read about the whole thing LE stated that there were multiple bodies along the canal but they could never tie them to him.
Yes, abuse can cause mental illness and violent behaviour. However I don't buy the defendant's claims what his mother allegedly did to him, I think he made that up to make his insanity plea sound believable - he couldn't deny being the killer after all, since his DNA was on the victims.
Also, since the mother is already dead she can't defend herself from these claims anymore.
Plus the mom was so disturbed by his notes she told the cops. It's a weak and desperate defence angle

I don't buy the "abused by my mother" claim. He can say anything he wants, his mom is dead. She can't defend herself. Also, did he ever tell his wife Amy that his mom abused him? Probably not, since his mom didn't.

@@Gerwi545 The reality is that humans have biases and often adopt one narrative that wants nothing to do with why someone committed the crime or what led them to become a serial killer. Most often the statements are: Ooh well many people get abused as children and they don’t become serial killers. While that is true, it gives no room to accept that many serial killers have had extremely complex traumas, and many have also started taking drugs and alcohol, which further deteriorated their mind and ability to control their behavior, emotions and responses towards others. Not everyone becomes a serial killer, but not everyone has the biological ( genetic), and environmental conditions to bring about their disturbing behaviors. The human animal is hard to fathom., it’s quite complex.

Good to know that modern DNA analysis can compensate for shoddy police work: the guy was already on the suspect list and nobody cared to find the similarities between the murders and his prior activity.

The thing is, most detectives are probably lazy "direct deposit" government employees who phone it in and do the bare minimum. It's so rare in any field to find motivated people who actually care about their work......
Since he was a juvenile was his record sealed or expunged? Melissa’s case was in 2002.
He was a juvenile with his first attack. LE probably never looked into a juvenile for the crimes and I don’t know if they are linked with adult crimes so it probably wasn’t as easy to put together.

Not an excuse, but there's cause and effect. Many abused kids end up mentally ill and some of them turn violent themselves.

Glad to see a Brandy Myers segment being included alongside Angela Brosso and Melanie Bernas. I can't even imagine the heartbreak and loss their families have experienced. I was also hoping that Adrienne Salinas would be acknowledged in the episode as well. 19 year old Adrienne disappeared around 5 a.m. on June 15, 2013, in Tempe, Arizona, while walking alone. Her partial remains were found months later in a wash. Bryan Patrick Miller's friend (Keene Azariah) has stated in several interviews that he and Bryan both attended (separately) a mutual friend's house warming party (pig roast) the same night of Adrienne's disappearance. The party took place only a mile away from Adrienne's last seen location. Keene also mentioned that the location of Adrienne's discovered remains was also the same wash location (Weekes Wash) that he and Bryan explored during a treasure hunt in 2012. The police confirmed those reports to be accurate, but its been several years since I've seen anything substantial regarding the case, and whether or not it will be linked to Bryan Patrick Miller. There doesn't appear to be any evidence, and his legal defense is that he supposedly doesn't remember the horrible murders he has committed. Who really knows, but it seems to be too much of a coincidence, given what we now know about Bryan Patrick Miller.
I was hoping they had connected him to her as well - I read the article that his friend had written the the New Times after Miller was arrested, and how he thinks there's a likely connection to Adrienne. I really hope they can solve her case someday. She was the same age as my daughter and disappeared just down the street. I check on her case now and then to see if they've found anything new, but I think Miller's friend is right in thinking he's involved.

People Magazine Investigates did a great episode about Adrienne. It's so blatantly obvious Miller killed her but I don't think the police and prosecutors care enough. Even 48 Hours couldn't be bothered to mention her.
What a sick evil monster blaming his childhood trauma for killing those girls and what is sicker is his defence lawyer rubbing his back when he was sentenced to death.
Why would anyone believe him? He’s probably disparaging his mothers memory because it gives him some sort of weird satisfaction. He obviously hates women. I doubt his mom did anything aside from be somewhat strict.

Nov of 92 we celebrated my daughter's 10th birthday party at castles and coasters at night, riding the pirate ship and other rides, the next day on the news they said they found the head next to the pirate ship ride on the other side of the fence. All of the people that came to the party called and asked if I had watched the news, we were all freaked out.
30 years of this serial killer running loose in the valley, everyone was on edge. Glad he was caught, and the judge made the right decision and the families getting justice.
My dad worked in the NOPD crime lab in the 70s and early 80s. I loved going there as a child (he took my 5th grade class on a field trip there). Before my parents moved out west in 2003, we went by the “new crime lab”. Dad would fire guns into a well to retrieve a bullet and they would compare them with a microscope. It’s incredible to see DNA advances (also CCTV, phone tracing. . . ). Awesome that non-detectives can use their passion and expertise to help solve crimes!
Sure, it's possible his mom contributed to his future behavior. However, the time to address that is not AFTER you've unalived someone.
So the police had a list of people and one of them was already convicted of stabbing a lady in the back and they did not put 2 and 2 together??? What the??
I don’t understand how nobody caught this guy sooner, or how investigator seem to be shocked when his DNA came back as a match.
He was listed as a person of interest, and he literally has a history of stabbing a woman riding her bike, and a self confessed desire to decapitate and sexually assault women

I am gratified the judge adjudicated him guilty in both cases and further, sentenced him to death...I can only imagine the total number of his victims...
Lastly, given the mother's fear of him, preventing him from coming home, etc...I find it disgusting that the defense would besmirch her character posthumously...she certainly became his last victim as she had feared....
I agree. I think he never forgave her for not welcoming him back to a home they'd shared and also turned over that writing he'd crafted giving early indication that he was a sicko.
Maybe she really was abusive. Being dead shouldn't excuse someone from how they lived their life. The corrections officers I've known were scummy people.

Such a captivating but tragic case..these women seemed so full of life and promise and then to be taken away in an instant from their families and friends in such a brutal fashion and at such a young age it’s so hard to imagine what their loved ones had to endure. I hope both Angela and Melanie are able to rest in eternal peace now.
Well done to everyone particularly the cold case unit and all those people who give DNA to ancestry websites (that includes me). It is a difficult issue - I read the terms and conditions, I considered the pros and cons and I went ahead and gave mine.
The look on the experienced judge's face as she has to sit and listen to horrors no one should ever have to hear about says it all.

The killer at one point considered calling himself The Canal Stabber, but upon further reflection decided that the Zombie Hunter would be less obvious.
I’m at the beginning but the idea of being literally hunted down by a man dressed like this would make the murders SO MUCH WORSE. The fear level. And if he didn’t wear his costume while he did it he is still a clown. Truly a weak small little pathetic man taking these beautiful vibrant women away. He wanted their light. Buy a gun, learn how to handle and use it, and get a concealed handgun license. Don’t roll the dice that you won’t be a victim. Be proactive with your self protection. All the women in my family carry guns. Two of them have had close calls and had to use them. Never had to fire, but they would have.. luckily just drawing it and leaving no doubt they would use it was enough in both cases.

Serial killers always seem to be soft spoken and charming, really creepy. But that attempt to blame his mother was lame, you can’t create a serial killer they’re just born that way.
He has more bodies no doubt.
