I think that it would be best before getting intimate with someone to let them know if you are trans, NOT for fear or danger of reprisal, but because there's less chance of hurt feelings on either side. It's NOT an excuse to harm someone, but it makes sense to discuss it before getting sexual.

I see plenty of these kind of tragic endings, and usually the accused found out way too late in the relationship, or meeting that the person they were talking to was actually not a woman. Just say when the flirting begins that you are trans, because if you are proud of who you are (as you should be, like we all should trans, straight, in between etc), then you should have no problem saying it when someone is flirting with you.

24:31 Well that’s a beautiful sentiment. But. It’s such a shame that Lisa’s drive “to do right by her child” didn’t kick in earlier, ie while her child was alive and spiraling. *My comment is NOT based on the matter of transgender status.. we can remove that factor from my point entirely.* Because her child, trans or not, was clearly struggling and on a very destructive path as a school suspended, violent fighting, shot 6 times, teenage METH addict for goodness sakes. Red flags were a-flying and gave Lisa multiple opportunities to “do right by her child”.

Nope. This is why at least one safe parent is needed.
That the mother phrased it as "She led the way, I followed" says alot.
Also: single mothers mostly didn't chose that past from the get-go. Many were forced to leave in order to survive. So in the end, it often is to blame on the fathers. But not them missing, but them behaving abusive.

Nikki’s mother should have been more concerned with what she was up to and tried harder to keep her out of trouble. I feel if Nikki had been upfront about being trans, she may still be alive today. Also if she was on drugs and a violent person, it’s hard to really discern what actually happened. I’m not saying murdering someone is okay, especially just because of how they identify. From the age, the drugs to being out all hours of the night...I know we can't be over our kids 24/7, but with the known issues, there should have more rules. I also believe in honesty. Though people may choose to live their lives a certain way, not every wants to engage in it. Letting someone know right off the bat in an open and safe environment is important. These days it's getting harder to tell who is who and people don't want to be surprised. To some it it's vile and disturbing. With that said, multiple people, including the victim, could and should have made better decisions with simple common sense and better judgment. If transgenders or anyone else for that matter wishes to be respected and treated with care, then they should also respect and treat others with the same respect and care. By doing so, that would include being up front about sexual gender.

This was a very sad story. What killed Niki was the incredible lack of parenting. There was no counselling, no treatment sought for addiction, no education, no house rules, no structure, no discipline. Parental neglect is child abuse. It was incredible to hear the mother bemoaning all the milestones in life her child would never achieve. Did she really expect Niki to graduate university, have a career, be a respectable, contributing member of the greater community, build a family that wasn't dysfunctional coming from the one she had, when already at 17 she's a dropout meth addict with gender issues engaging in extremely high risk behavior? Where did Niki get money for drugs and the beginnings of facial treatments (lips)? Was she turning tricks to finance this lifestyle? Why was she shot 6x? Was it for the same reason she was murdered? There's a lot that has been glossed over in this story. Niki was no girl scout. But to blame society for her demise is wrong. To expect others to share in the deception of the trans fantasy is also wrong. There ought to be a law against withholding the truth about your gender when engaging in a personal relationship. Others in the community also need to be respected and protected. The revulsion and shame felt by the man who killed Niki is perfectly understandable - but to cause injury or death is not. I agree with the sentence he was given.
