@@vejymonsta3006 I never played the second or third games though I have seen trailers and some gameplay. I totally agree with you on valkyria Revolution though. Kind of a waste of a game I'm so glad they're going back to the basics. I didn't really like the Grenadier at first but they have grown on me too. All in all I'm so ready for this game to come out so I can play!
VC4 is a great game but they really didn't improve it over the 1st. I wish they would drop the episode stuff an just play it in one shot instead of little pieces at a time. Also should have done away with the panels for story telling.

My favorite series in the entire gaming world! It is way too underrated, so I'm getting the Premium Edition to support them further.
I actually love the story-telling and the comic strip style. It gives you the power over cutscenes and enables you to to understand what is to come better、 so you are not surprised by a battle when you are not prepared. You always know when they will happen.
Bought it today and been playing non stop, it's been a while since I've seen such fun JRPG and really underrated too. Wonder why I never knew about it before.
The combat is very deep and challenging. I think it might be m my favorite combat system of all time, so deeply engaging that the first time I played VC1 a couple weeks ago I couldn't pull away and stopped playing every other game I had. When I beat it I immediately started downloading VC4 and am now 8 chapters in. It wouldn't surprise me if after I beat 4 I just go back to 1 for A ranks. I dont think the story is as serious in 4 but otherwise, 4 definitely has s lot of cool little path blockers like mortars and pillboxes that make you think out of the box to survive. It's very challenging, very rewarding, and very replayable like ny other favorite game, Bloodborne
Love the cell shade look and have not been a good RTS game since the Xcom's so glad I will be able to pick this up for my PS4. Thanks for the spotlight on this game and the depth of the review.
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is essentially this game just older style. So if your your wondering if you would like the game you can pick it up a lot cheaper before going into Valkyria Chronicles 4.

LOVE this franchise, absolutely will be picking this game up. It's a shame it's so underrated.
I have one question, is the scoring system still based on how quickly you beat a level? It was the one thing that annoyed me about the first game, and mind you I LOVE the first game. But it was annoying that I could move with tactics, not lost a single soldier, and take out ALL of the enemies, and get a D ranking where as if I just took some Scouts, and ran them around the edge of the map to race to the enemy flag, I'd get an A rank. Was just a little silly to me in a tactical game to get scored that way since I prefered to play tactically and measured but that handicapped my progress because it took longer to earn experience points to level up.
It's not timing based. It's turn based. At least it was in the original I believe.
My apologies, that is what I meant though. That it only mattered how few turns it took to complete a map. As I said, I loved the game, I own it on PC, PS3, and just picked up the PS4 version of the first game. But take the Part 28 Storming the Beach mission, it's a little disapointing that I can play that mission, and not lose a single solider, take out all of the enemies, and only get ranked a D, but race to the enemy flag as few soldiers as possible, and you can get the S rank. It takes me a bit out of the story conflict when it's just getting from point A to B in the shortest amount of turns when the reality is your one little soldier who took that flag is about to die horribly because they are outnumbered. But it's a very minor complaint.
It's kind of a shame that this franchise (like a lot of Sega's franchise) is so underrated.

Underrated is good. I dont wanna see valkyria being milked as a cash cow so that we get more sequals of crappy quality
@@Noacuracy It is good, yes, it improves nothing over the 1st game, but is not bad, the only Valkyria that was "bad" was Revolution, and that wasn't too bad. The sequels are maybe not as good as the first one, but they're not bad either.

This is a game for people with a brain lol. So their games don't appeal to the mass market of gamers. I enjoy a good FPS battle royal or TDM as much as anyone but games like this are so much more rewarding when all is said and done.
I'm really loving this game! The pacing is really great and the characters are really colorful. I love the gameplay so much. Valkyria Revolution seems like a distant memory.
Thanks for the review! I mostly loved the original, but felt it didn't meet its fullest potential. The original had an incredibly strong beginning, but I lost interest as the story unwound, becoming increasingly ridiculous. Then the series went down a weird tangent and Revolution happened. Didn't play a single one of those sequels. I want to pick this one up. I just hope it doesn't lean too much towards the whole plot of the original with the weird anime villains, and instead focuses on being an actual war drama with an anime aesthetic.
I want to get this game, but am torn between this and Dragon Quest 11. They both look so good

Probably new to the franchise altogether. Whoever was playing looked fairly ignorant of most of the mechanics and nuances that one would've picked up by just playing the first game. Which is fine, it's a ten-year old game, but it's obvious that a lot of the footage in this video wasn't taken by someone that had at the very least played VC4 for an extensive period of time.
That whole running up into any enemies face and ending the turn there was too much lol. Also who shoots a tank radiator, with a machine gun? haha
Shooting a tank radiator with a machine gun is actually a good tactic, but you need to get close so, Scouts+Destruction Order are still the best unit for Tank Killing.
It's been about 8 years since I played the 1st game, but I don't recall the scouts or shocktroopers doing much damage to radiators on their own like the guy in the video is doing. Using orders + grouping troops are more advanced tactics.
Grouping Troops takes too much CP(Command Points), for me it's better to have 3 CP for the Demolition Order, and 1 CP for the scout, since you're only committing 1 Scout and it's safer.

Much of what was in the first game was still in the DEMO for this game. I think most updates and changes is what they all ready did in the PSP sequels. Scouts are less OP it seems (there were really OP in the first game) and we got a new Class (that gamingbolt didn't tell you anything about). But besides that, expect more of the same with a few updates.
Sevuz only Alicia, Aika and few other scouts are OP. Double-movement was really a game breaker though, followed by Alicia's Valkyria abilities.
Yeah, that's the general problem with the VC1. Scout rush becomes such an easy tactic to use and makes the other classes less important most of the time. I think I can think of 3 times in VC1 where you just need the Tank and Shocktrooper to win a fight within 3-4 turns as well.
Ah I see. So the DLC kinda broke the balance in VC1 and we see a return of in it VC4 as well (I have only played the DEMO once)?
This is a great game spent 30hrs in VC, cant wait for the new Waifus and me raging when loosing them in battle.

There is a demo out for xbox one, switch (I think, I don't own one), and PS4 that gives you a couple skirmishes and story chapters, and your save file can transfer to the full game should you get it. I'd say go try it for yourself, I personally love it.
Edit: Realized I didn't completely answer your question. As far as story goes, you don't need knowledge of past games to understand what's happening, but playing through the first game will probably help immerse you in the world for 4 (imo).

Play Valkyria Chronicles first, it probably pretty cheap by now and will probably tell you if you like this sort of thing.

Up to chapter 9. SO DONE WITH THE COMIC BOOK STORYBOARDS. Some work with the mission but most are just mindless filler. lol How many loading screens does a game need? Combat has devolved into rambo all our points into characters till they are out of ammo and send in another. The AI starts doing as well. When it wants one of your guys dead they are gonna be dead. LOL Started out REALLY good but quickly becomes a race to the flag torpedoes be damned.
Not really finding any use for weapons picked up during battles. I am upgrading my troops but the bullet sponges on the other team mean screw strategy and spam the heavy's over and over. I wouldn't call it a strategy game. Disclaimer. Yes I am a PC player and the switch is my first console since N64 which I think is a planter at my folks place still. To be fair I am having a ton of fun in between yelling at the shortcomings of the game and trying to remember how controllers work again. Mainly wanted to play Breath of the wild because everyone says it's amazing and Valkyria Chronicles 4 came with the used switch. I do recommend the game. At least the first half of it. Side note. At some point an alarm will be going off in the ice. My cats went on full alert trying to find out what it was.

Well, that was the intention. The change between 1 and 2 is just too jarring for some, especially with the tone. And not everyone enjoyed playing on handhelds. Timing is the key and they did it in the right time. Its been 10 years since the first game already and im pretty sure people who played and preferred the original don't mind the little or no change.
@suiken Exactly like you said. It's been 10 years, a return to form isn't so bad; however, adding more music and classes other than the Grenadiers could give it more push.
Granted I didn't bother with 2 and 3 never left Japan, so it really has been a long wait for me so I'm generous. Besides I loved the demo.
You can easily play 3 now. It was translated and released for play on emulators by fans.
@@indiscretion. that really is the problem with VC4. It's almost a carbon copy of the first game. I'm in chapter 7 an I feel like all I'm doing is playing a big dlc of the first game.

Yeah I actually see it as a good thing. I really wanted more of VC1. I like to think of more like a CoD MW2. Mostly the same game, but a new story and some gameplay improvments.

Since the Original creator got booted off VC3, the fans have been asking for a game the brings us back to VC1. Guess what? Orginal creator got pulled back into VC and literally made the game we've been asking for.
I also like that this game is tactical just like Chronicles, but it has been 10 years since the first game. They could've used a new engine and a new music.
