    Opinion sharing time. I beat the game myself not too long ago, got the platinum trophy as well so I did put in plenty of time with it, so I'd just like to share some of my thoughts as well.
    While I did enjoy the game overall, there's no getting around that it's pretty flawed in a number of ways. Pretty much for every good thing I have to say is followed by a negative.
    The story for the most part is pretty interesting. Really goes deep into politics and the behind-the-scenes of war with how various aspects, from battles to the citizen opinions, can be manipulated. Has this huge revenge motif, something that seems to be getting more popular since "Disgaea 5" and "Tales of Berseria" had it as well. But for as good or interesting as I thought it was... the antagonists I found to be either terrible or just so plain dull. Really, the Valkyria was the only one who felt had any lasting impact or threatening presence throughout the story.
    Thankfully the characters fair much better but not by too much. It's very lopsided. The main cast obviously get the most attention and are fine for the most part. The rest of the squad are very hit or miss.
    Then there's the production values. While models for the most part are definitely nicely detailed, the character models in particular are just so incredibly stiff during cutscenes and there's just something about them that seems off to me in some ways. I initially thought it was due to the developers making the characters look closer to Honjou Raita art style, who has worked on "Valkyria Chronicles", which usually features very disproportionate body types with sharp-ish facial features (Honjou Raita pixiv account here, 18+ warning: www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=188638 )...but apparently Honjou Raita had nothing to do with the game despite how close the characters look to be under his style. The detailing might be better than the previous games but between that stiffness, the odd character proportions/details, and lack of the unique cell-shaded drawn aesthetic...it just comes off looking pretty cheap in comparison. Which is kind of a shame since you will be going through numerous and long cutscenes looking at them.
    And now finally, the gameplay. Probably has what I consider to have the biggest issues overall. While it was enjoyable to me for what it was, it really felt like it was conflicted between trying to be it's own thing while still being part of the "Valkyria Chronicles" brand. It had some interesting aspects going for it but the staple mechanics from the main games integrated here made some things feel either awkward to work with or just were near completely pointless. Even past that, balancing was all over the place. Bosses in general were really annoying to fight against and Sappers spamming ragnite was so ridiculously broken compared to any other actions you could take, especially if you got some good effects on the ragnite which make them even more busted. And that's even considering that I primarily went with a more physical approach to developing/equipping the characters.
    I remember hearing that the gameplay was changed mid-development due to receiving a pretty bad blow back from fans for being so different. Looking it up just now, it really was quite different to how it is now in how it was a lot more free-flow. Demo footage here: czcams.com/video/0J0YHEejjyo/video.html. And watching it, a lot of the issues I had and awkwardness I felt suddenly seem to make sense. I can't help but wonder how the game would have turned out if the developers progressed with their initial ideas instead of backpedaling to appease those complaining fans. If nothing else, I think I actually prefer how everything looks in the demo than in the game itself. But regardless of what it could have been, this is what we got. I'm not going to say none of the hate is undeserved but I definitely do think it's being overblown with some bandwagoning going on.
    In all, I'd say it's an enjoyable if not a notably flawed experience. Not bad but not really great either.

      @TarksGauntlet  Před 7 lety +6

      I think I agree with almost everything you said here.
      At the start when you indicated there's almost as much good as there is bad, that's why I settled on saying it's basically just "Average" at the end.
      The battle was so close to being fun, but it's not fun as often as I would like. It feels to me like they were building something great and either deadlines were approaching or budget was getting tight so they just had to make what they had be functional, but not quite balanced to be as fun or deep as intended. Of course, changing battle systems mid development could also cause such a thing haha.
      When I heard people freaking out that it made a change to be an action RPG I didn't worry at all cause I like action rpgs a fair amount, but this just didn't quite get where it needed to be. I gave it a fair shake, but it didn't hit it for me.
      "I'm not going to say none of the hate is undeserved but I definitely do think it's being overblown with some bandwagoning going on."
      I definitely agree with this as well. Most of the hate I seen was hyperbolic because it was different. Very few people seemed to make real criticisms about the actual content of the game, just that it was different (And that's probably why I thought getting it was still a great idea haha)
      Game definitely had some fun moments, but so many underwhelming or annoying ones too it's hard to say it's a game that should be recommended to people. No matter what though I cannot wrap my head around how they thought making difficulty scaling happen in the reverse of the norm (Battles get easier the further you go) was a good idea. It just makes starting every new mission feel like a step back, and that makes it over-all discouraging to keep playing to me.
      I never platinumed the game, but I looked up the true ending after completing it and watched some of the optional cutscenes I missed while I was at work. Story and subplot is definitely big and deep, but a bit too convoluted for it's own good, and the true ending is disappointing. *Spoiler alert* Game devs need to grow some nads and let the dead stay dead. Dark endings are okay! lol
      Great comment man! (Woman?) Definitely appreciate these well thought out and undoubtedly time consuming to write comments. You're almost as verbose as me :P

      Yeah, I tend to be a bit wordy when it comes to describing my opinion about something, especially on stuff I have a decent amount of experience with. I try to cut back but I guess that just goes to show how much I have to say, or at least am trying to be clear with.

It was $40 brand new and IMO that's a huge steal for a lot gamers back in 2017.

      I enjoyed it too, and yeah definitely flawed in certain aspects, like certain missions I RIP into like I'm the Koolaid man and it's a cardboard wall. Others I get sidesmacked into oblivion for whatever reason. My level being ten levels above (I do like that level does NOT necessitate ease). I picked up the collectors edition and I think it worth it. It's a 6-7 out of 10....and I literally couldnt put it down. That and I've played waaay worse games. Elex comes to mind. Lord of the Fallen... yeah.... really wish some reviewer wouldve told me THOSE sucked XD. Might be the reason why I give some games I own a better score...

    I think this game might have the same general problem as Shining Resonance Refrain. It has the name of a beloved series attached to a completely unrelated, fairly generic JRPG, for the sole reason to sell more copies. This game doesn't need to be called Valkyria. But it is because it was supposed to sell more.

    i personally LOVE this game (the soundtrack alone carries it for me). it helps that i'm rather new to the Valkyria series and not a long time fan so i didn't have as high expectations of the gameplay as a longtime fan would have. so i can understand why longtime fans are disappointed. newcomers are much more likely to enjoy this

    Never played Valkyria Chronicles. Was always a little intimidated by the strategy aspect. I will dip my feet into the series. I bought the limited edition of Revolution for $20. Dunno when I will play it (or if I ever will, since I have a plethora of games on backlog across PS5 and PS4 games), but I will eventually give it a go and then play Chronicles Remastered and then VC4.

    The awesome thing about VC1 is that everytime something feels like it got really hard, you have a save state method where you can save in the middle of a turn and come back to that same save any time you want, skipping a reset button or game over screen. With enough thought you can figure out how to buff 2 squad members and blitz camps with like 2-3 troops in a couple turns. And I probably had to do like 13 skirmishes overall for leveling up but they're all fun to master and make you better at the game. That's a good kind of hard; a figure it out hard. And want some better real time action RPGs than Valkyria Revolution? Dark Souls. You can beat the whole game with your starting weapon. Fuck that "literally only weak to magic" bs if it were like that in Dark Souls people wouldn't hype it the way it is

  • @nikodem123asdf
    @nikodem123asdf Před 3 lety +1

    My thoughts on the game are; Sega was wondering if fans of VC wanted a new game in the same style or something new, so they released VC remastered and this together, as a low budget way of testing waters.
    I really loved this game, but I do agree the difficulty spikes are insane, it can go from mindless hacking and slashing to "what is even going on anymore" like the Valkyria fights or the 2 headed snake or that godforsaken blimp.
    But I do enjoy it as a revisiting of clunky PS2 action game but in shiny HD graphics.

    I enjoyed it a fair bit. Of course, it was the first game in the Valkryia series with a new battle system. So there would be some issues here and there. But if they make another one, they could refine it even further. I don't hate it when a series has a new battle system. For me, it breathes new life into it.

    The game had flaws but I enjoyed playing it some of the bosses were ridiculous near the end the flying whale boss was one the twin head snake boss and the the one that looks like a centaur burnhilde too and also there are ragnite spells that can speed up the action gauge real quick it's the wind element ones.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  Před 7 lety

      I just used Heal circle a bunch and basically made my team invincible so I could tank anything. The snake boss was hands down the worst though. The flying whale/airship was more or less easy but so time consuming cause it rarely came down close enough to damage it. I enjoyed brief moments but so much of it just kind of irritated me, or made me feel it was just short of being well done.

    I'm gonna be honest there's one aspect of this review that makes it clear you missed out on loads of content (at least at the time you made this video 2 1/2 years ago) and that's the feact you said you didn't really watch the Book Menu scenes. All the scenes in there are Main story scenes, the reason it's put there and not in cutscenes during gameplay was because it was a Artistic Choice to make it seem like each of those scenes were separate entries in the Journal (as the story's supposed to be accounts in the book) and each of these scenes are given dates at the start of it to show they all occur at different times and do not take place at the moment where you're actually playing as Amleth in the town/battlefield. This artistic choice has also existed in some of the Valkryia Chronices games (with 2 being the only notable exception if i'm right as it seems to be the series' world's present timeline when it came out while VC1 was just accounts from the past) as all the cutscenes are accessed in the same way for the most part with a handful occurring during battle (and those are also seen as entries in the book that you can go back to watch at any time). By not looking at these scenes you missed probably about 60% of the games character development (especially for all the characters besides Amleth, Orphelia, and the 5 traitors).

  • @americanace96

    I played the original and I'm going through it again for the fourth one (wish Sega would remaster 2 and 3 for console). I'll be honest and had a bit of bias against it before release, but I gave it a chance. It promptly failed it within the first five missions. The graphics were PS3 level, the controls lagged occasionally, all forms of movement felt stiff, and that looming idea of this being a rushed product showed it's self in bits and pieces. I still have it and I might give it a chance later but it will be a while until I do.

    I hated the hydra boss so much. You have to kill the second head within 10 seconds of the first more difficult head or they get all their health back. Making a reasonable 5 minute boss fight to a 20 minute boss fight while you figure out what's going on.

    I will say this now, so there is no confusion: as of the moment I am writing this, I have NOT beaten Revolution. This is just what I have encountered thus far.
    My main complaint is that Revolution does not fit in within the confines of the Valkyria Chronicles narritive and it's respective universe. In VC1, the story was about some kid who got enlisted into the military solely because of his family lineage. Throughout the game, we see him become both comfortable and uncomfortable with his place in the militia, and at the end finding his love and raising a family. Meanwhile, in VC:R, it's just about revenge... The main reason Revolution doesn't work as a Valkyria game, to me at least, is because of the universe's technology. In VC1, it felt reminiscent of how in Metal Gear, certain events seem beliveable because we've seen such technology advence in it's time and it's explanation and reason of such tech.. Like how there's tanks, rifles, submachine guns, and even the Valkyria herself which is mostly from WW2, including a literal Valkyrie from Norse Mythology. However, in Revolution, there's fuckin' giant scorpions, actual AT-STs from Star Wars, and spells and magic, magical staffs, and giant swords, ; and none of it is properly explained. Selvaria is beliveable because she is, quite literally, a Wunderweapon in comparison to everything the game has thrown at you thus far. Her power is expanded and explained upon through the game's own mythos about her "race". However, the "Grim Reaper" is NOT believable due the aforementioned shit that the game throws out at you.
    TL;DR
    My reaction to Revolution when compared to the original: czcams.com/video/olT9kj1VFeg/video.html

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 Před 4 lety +1

      Well....almost no chance of you seeing this a year later but the World of Valkyria Revolution is NOT the same world as Valkyria Chronicles. They both share the Valkyria name due to the Valkyria's in each game (which both work completely differently with Revolution's Valkyria's mainly having their powers used via their songs while in Chronicles they channel their power via Ragnite weapons like the lances). It's basically like how FF or Tales have most of their games that while both are called Tales take place in completely different worlds, in this case both are their own distinct alternate versions of Europa (which is more or less a fantasy alternate version of WW2 Europe), the most noticeable way to notice this is the name of the countries are completely different between the 2 series even though they'd roughly in the same geographical space (the country borders are also completely different as well which makes it more obvious Revolution and Chronicles aren't the same worlds). This is pretty much why the narrative doesn't fit well with Chronicles's games because they're not supposed to be in the same narrative.

    Good game with some flaws that need just minor rebalance mod but it's just too different from mainline VC - Persona 3 got crap early as a big change in formula, Fallout 3 did the same, but the problem is this changes were not needed as Fallout changed due to the fact its gameplay was too niche for economic viability of ressurecting the franchize while Persona was getting too similar to mainline SMT and choice was between new formula, branch deletion (why keep persona if it'll be just normal SMT?) or becoming mechanically a generic jrpg.
    In case of VC new formula was simply not needed as fans love it (as proved by PC port sales) and the system being unique with no competition in regards to that style of gameplay.

    The biggest problem I had with this game was that I either hated or didn’t care about over half the characters in the game. Amleth was a “hero” who wanted to be an avenger but couldn’t hack it, Ophelia was dumber than cardboard, Godot was a walking contradiction to himself, Issak made it his life goal to piss you off, Sara made my ears bleed every time she opened her mouth, Brigitte was dull, Tilda was somehow duller, half the time I forgot Jordur and Daryl even existed, and for the love of everything can someone explain the mess that was maxim? Every time I think about it, I just can’t figure out what the guy is trying to accomplish aside from being the most lukewarm character I’ve ever seen... the rest just fall into their own tropes and never come back out. It’s sad really, since I actually enjoyed Helena and Blum, and for the short amount of time you get her Miranda.

    Valkyria Revolution is THE ONLY ONE game in series, when Sega was not involved in development, this game was made only by Mediavision for own money and published by Sega (like Shining Force Resonance: Refrain). Devs wanted trying something new with this franchise, i apreatice that, but the definitely should not made this game without Sega GE2 help. This experiment only caused bad word of mounth for upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 4, and because of this spin-off VC4 was worst selling mainline game in series in Japan. They should try with VR after release VC4, not before.

    This game is like 99% cutscenes and 1% actual gameplay. Hell, I think the cutscenes if you add them all together will take you longer to finish than playing through the entire combat sections of the game. Its what ultimately ruined it imo because the combat system is actually more enjoyable than the turn based battles of the first three games. It's the Metal Gear Solid 4 of the Valkyria series.

    I honestly think your issues with the battle speed come down the the character your decided to play.
    There are other character with extremely fast recharge action times which speeds up combat with buffs, if you think attacking with the button is so slow then you should have spent the time to learn other mechanics to speed up the combat with buffs Megane speed boosts and large magic attacks.

      Speed is hardly an issue, and really, using anybody faster would just make the biggest problem worse, that of the games balance being entirely backwards.

      I mean, the point of the story is more to find out *why* you and your friend were considered traitors, and if that was actually correct.
      IIRC, Final Fantasy Tactics had a similar freaking mechanism: the main character was remembered as a traitor, but recently unearthed documents show that this was actually due to propaganda and what actually happened was depicted through the course of the game. Ditto with Persona 5, to a lesser extent.

      True, i have played the first VC and it is NOTHING LIKE THIS ONE. This looks like a fantasy game while VC seemed grounded in a middly realistic setting. Plus if the robots hands and the weapons that allow you to use magic would have dominated the battlefield not be replaced by regular guns.
