Why would a person want to buy a game in a series they like if the core of that game is gone? That's like saying its ok to have a Fire Emblem game without turn-based strategy and perma-death. That's like having Zelda with no dungeons & Puzzles or a Battlefield/CoD with no shooting mechanics.

Mayo Rice Have you even played the previous valkyria games? The psp games had more unique gameplay for God's sake. Valkyria revolutions is that "more of the same" that you speak of. They made guns useless and melee weapons the primary source of damage. As the reviewer said it's basically dynasty warriors with a valkyria tag on it.
Honestly, I think a lot of hate this game gets is because it's so different from its predecessors. I picked it up without having played any of the games in the series before and found it enjoyable. If you play it with an open mind and without expecting it to be another Valkyria Chronicles, it might be a little more appreciated. For JRPGs in this day and age, it's pretty solid with an interesting enough story and engaging battle system. Story reminds me of FF Tactics since it is a retelling of a major war involving the kingdom of Jutland which had been written down inaccurately as part of history. The battle system itself is reminiscent of Mistwalker's The Last Story(if anyone has played that). It's hack/slash/action-oriented but has tactical elements involved(commanding allies, a cover system involving sandbags/buildings/trees/grass, etc., and the ability to affect the emotions of your enemies which you can take advantage of to help make battles easier). You're able to cast magic as well and while your main weapons are swords and the such, you're able to use guns/rifles/grenades to help give you tactical advantages. You pretty much have the freedom to approach battles however you want and can play as any of the characters you bring with you on missions.
The first half of the game is fairly easy but I found that the difficulty level really spikes up the last 1/3 of the game. I do agree, however, that most of the cutscenes are long and would have benefitted from being more lively. Regardless, the story kept me playing and I found the battle system to be quite fun. I'd give it an 8/10, personally...but again, that's without any bias.
Divine Aria if you liked this and FFT then play VC remaster and VC2 they are so good and are different in tone while consistent in narrative so you see a conflict from a variety of perspectives.

Luke William I do not play it for WWII or anime. I watch anime for anime and read/watch WWII media for that. I play VC for turn based tactical gameplay and a character/relationship driven story.

This was just a spinoff yet there was no mention of that so its not segas fault. Japanese companies always do spinoffs of games its not something new or different so they shouldn't be put off on it and compared it so much to their main counterpart.
This game sold pretty bad in Japan so this might be our last Valkyria game sadly.

Fun how these PS Vita game ports are criticized for graphics while it's just the Vita graphics tuned up a bit.
The Vita is really relevant in Japan and still get loads of games for it. But we mostly have to do with the ported versions of the game. The reviewers don't stop to consider that this is a port that would lead to some older looking graphics.
Though I would say that graphics don't really make the game. Mainly the gameplay and additionally the story as well.
This game's first teaser trailer was released in January 2016 and it said PS4 only. It was only on August or September that they released another trailer the said it would come to the PS Vita as well, so no, it's not a PS Vita game ported to the PS4. It's a PS4 game ported to the PS Vita with lesser graphics.
They turned a good jrpg into a trashy generic tales jrpg. Shame on you Sega

Mayo Rice Agree Tales of is a fantastic JRPG series with great Stories and Characters. Also this review puts the spin off game alongside the main series which is unfair since spin offs are meant to take different directions. Also I like the artstyle what he didn't mention was what the story itself was like and whether it's short or longish

sorathecrow its not like dynasty warriors. Play the demo. It is supposed to be an action strategy game kind of like resonance of fate, but rather than jumping in the air and doing crazy tricks, you are grounded and use sword and gun attacks that regen after time
So much for Sega making quality games again, the only series they produce worth caring for is Yakuza.
Their Shining series are good, but they don't release it worldwide.

Persona 5 is made by Atlus, and this game is made by Media.Vision. Sega distributes those games but didn't actually make them.
I can verify this game is pretty bad, I had high hopes after the previous games in the series but this is a big let down.
I preordered for the collectors version. I don't care if it's not a good game. I regret nothing.

To see valkyria chronicles go from a beautifully drawn, tactical rpg to a bland looking dynasty warriors clone hurts my soul. Looks mediocre
To be honest. I looked like it's on the trash tier even among Dynasty Warriors clones.
What a downer;.This was a great idea to give to the fans and new comers, an alternative type of game in parallel to the Valkyria Chronicles series but this game feels so far from being good that i hope that the poor sales it will perform won't affect the original IP.
Sadly, the Valkyria Chronicles isn't known as it should be (why would Xcom perform well when Valkyria C doesn't, as they both are great "turn-based strategy" titles ?) but i fear that this "spin off" stains the name in the minds of those who are not familliar with the IP. This concept could and should have bring new people to know the title and give birth to a wider instalments to the series separated on both game types (in the way "Shin Megami Tensei" did with persona for instance) and broaden the scope of our perception of the story. But why make a lame game ? (and don't get me wrong i really appreciate Dragon Quest Heroes, One Piece Pirate Warriors, the good Dynastie Warriors and this type of games called "müso" when they are good, so it's a not a matter of game-style).
The initial idea was great but why not give the project to a studio that can take it to the wanted level rather than just throw the licence to the garbage ? it's a waste of money, a stain on the IP, and a disappointment to the fans who could easily have imagined how great this new entry could be due to the original material; It was easy to make a good game, so why this ?
Now let's hope this doesn't seal the doom of Valkyria Chronicles (or even the idea of a parallel series of games, because it's cool).
I wouldn't have minded a non-turn based Valkyria game if it still had gunplay and RTS elements. I feel the best way to do that is make it similar to ArMa but with an anime style, as well as maybe a less punishing damage model. I always loved the concept of ArMa not dropping you into the battle right away, but rather you walk or drive to your destination as well as commanding your teammates while in the field of battle, not to mention it'd fit the role-playing nature that Valkyria Chronicles is missing.
As for the story, take notes from Full Metal Jacket or Starship troopers in which you start out as a naive recruit, and slowly climb the ranks to becoming a grunt, to a squad leader, and even to a lieutenant.
Right, the ArMA model could have been cool. In fact several things may have been great with the right team that is able to give shape to their own ideas while taking inspiration here and there to increment their own vision of the game; It was an open field with a strong background; that's why it is so much of a let down.
I just miss the idea of the characters using guns which are inspired by WWII weapons, like the main semi-auto rifle resembling the SVT-40, and the SMG resembling an MP-40 or STG-44.

I don't really mind the poorly animated cut-scenes but he is right on point about the loading screens.
It's garbage. We knew it was going to be garbage. The Japanese even helpfully warned us that it was garbage back in January. Can't believe they even bothered to localize it.

Played the japanese version not long ago. Wasn't that bad in game system or combat just kinda miss the old turn base tactics system. VC 1 & 3 still the best of all.
Sega should remaster VC 3 for ps4.. Really should.

Berstich you can get a patch for fan english translated file online for the game for psp version.
That's another reason why sega should remaster VC 3 for ps4 and do wasten release as well. The game play and system were so much better.

levintine777 VC2 wasn't good, story progression, map design, and overall game flow was incredibly shallow to accommodate for the PsP. If they re-released it, it would have to be a remake. I can't forgive the boss units in that game.
I really wish that they would give us Valkyria Chronicles 3. I know it may never happen but who knows. They might surprise us.

I came back to this while playing Chronicles 4 and I'm impressed. I actually would love to have both going forward. Chronicles and Revolution. Revolution is much more fast paced and at times I dont want to do one mission for 2 hours because the valkryia or boss is cheese.
Sure revolution is far from perfect but it's also not bad. Im also more interested in the story now. I think I was so hung up on it not being Chronicles and what reviewers said that I ignored what the game actually offered.

UPDATE: This has soiled the Valkyria franchise - people going into this game as their "first" experience with the franchise will be completely put off the franchise forever. Buy Valkyria Chronicles - perfect game and complete opposite of this game - actually lets you PLAY the game! I barely got through the first level of Valkyria Revolution before at last it offered me my first save point, after being bombarded with loading screens and ridiculously long and shoddy animated cut scenes. AVOID THIS GAME! Trading this game in tomorrow. What a waste of money.

Was that a joke? A 15 minute cutscene isn't horribly long by JRPG standards... it's not THAT bad by any RPG standards. I'm guessing there's more to it than that, but making such a big deal over 15-minute long cutscenes makes it sound like the reviewer hasn't played too many JRPGs... or any of the Metal Gear Solids.

This was painful to watch... Valkyria Chroncles is one of, and still is, my favourite game on the PS3 of all time, and one of my all time favourite - easily joint first with Zelda Breathe of the Wild. It's painful to see how the Valkyria franchise has fallen. Just localise and release 2 and 3 on ps4! Get people talking about it again and then release a proper sequel! Not this generic JRPG bull crap!

This is a terrible review. This is more a rant than anything. The review does not try to be professional. Most of the 'issues' here such as load times, long cutscenes are present in games like Persona 5 but they praise that game while completely condemning this one. Play the game yourself. Modern game reviewers are almost all in the picket of this games and pubkishing companies. Journalism at its finest.
Sebastián de Jesús Muñoz Santana persona 5 also had a good story multiple engaging characters and a decent combat system. Not to mention the soundtrack and interesting life simulator stuff. That being said you might not have liked it but, there was a reason for all the praise it got.

i think he's trying to point out how dull the cutscenes are. p5s cutscenes had substance to them. and the fact you cant skip the subs or fast forward is very frustrating in any game like this. he also pointed out that the combat doesn't do enough to over shadow it. meaning he would've looked over these issues if the game had good combat. but it doesn't

Ok so my mum bought this for me recently because she thought it was similar to Final Fantasy and idk if I should play it, I liked FF XV, XIII and Type-0 HD (basically the Fabula Nova Chrystallis trilogy) does anyone know if it would be worth it?

Gone is the strategy basis that made me love the VC series of games. It's pretty obvious to see that this is not a Valkyria Chronicles game. After all, the title itself doesn't even say it. This is no VC game, this is just disappointimg
the combat is more xenoblade style but without the whole back attacks and whatnot. and when you use your magic or items time stops.
Game is on sale on PSN. I knew it was nowhere near as good as chronicles but for a mere 10 euro and a cartload of free dlc I decided to take the plunge. But yeah the cutscenes are the worst ive encountered so far. Frustratingly slow paced. Too many loadig screens. I'll continue playing it because the story and combat arent horrible (for a 10 euro game)

Valkyria chronicles was and still is one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. Valkyria Revolution is and will always be one of my greatest disappointments. What the hell were they thinking...
For a review that was mostly negative 6 seems kinda high.
