      I think the game was made specifically for you. It's very much like Fire Emblem from the strategic stand point. The way relationships with troops work, how you utilize and deploy them, the structure of maps and missions. The way you actually move troops in the field is very different, because of the third person real time elements, but honestly that just adds a thrilling level of heart pounding urgency to it rather than changing the flow of the genre. Also, yes. World War II. It's a war story through and through. Definitely get the first one and the fourth one! Skip 2 for your own sake. 3 is worth checking out if you can manage to get it.

  • @CombatArmsFanVideos
    @CombatArmsFanVideos Před 5 lety +4

    I think why I prefer the third game to the first is because the BLiTZ System works better in tighter maps where you can manoeuvre units from map to map with the greatest of ease, and the control you have over units. Units can be retreated and deployed from any base without having to use an action, aiming is less punishing since enemies don't continue to attack you for a split second when you enter aim mode, and certain classes like Gunner and Fencer really give some tactical benefits when you use them correctly. VC2 made Fencers way too strong though.
    VC3 also gives you the ability to make any unit become a class a you choose with two preferred classes that give stat boosts, interchangeable potentials that can help further customize units from other classes you use that unit in, and accessories which can give some characters unique roles in your squad. Like giving a Shocktrooper (such as Kurt) a high defence accessory to have him push through the front lines, or a Scout (such as Riela) an attack boost accessory against enemy personnel to kill even the highest HP of foes with some well placed headshots. Combining that with the many lootable weapons you get at the end of combat, there is just a level of customization in the third game that the first doesn't have.
    The story also involves the other squad members that aren't the main cast more heavily. I ended up feeling more connected with more people in the Nameless than I did in Squad 7 or Class G. But Class G had too many characters, and Squad 7 was really able to demonstrate some strong personalities through gameplay alone along with its better presentation, a strength which the first game definitely still has over the PSP titles. I do enjoy the UI in VC3 more in its aesthetics and its practicality, but VC1 has the superior look to the game I think newcomers would enjoy being on a console.
    The one thing I love about VC3 though that from my knowledge VC4 doesn't have is SP. Open Fire and the Valkyria special abilities are so fun to use. Sure the former is situational and forced at times, but the latter is a feature I think anyone that likes Valkyria Chronicles should experience. I think I used Direct Command like, twice in over 200 hours? That's something else the PSP titles have over the console games, the amount of content it has, abet primarily due to the recycled maps. Those never really bothered me personally because you learn them overtime, but I agree original maps make each mission more exciting and memorable moments as a whole.
    While I know VC2 did several of these things first, VC3 did them a lot better. But I still wouldn't recommend either over the first game because of the numerous characters and plot elements that appear from the first game in the PSP titles, that aren't explored as much. They're just a lot more fulfilling games if you have played the original.
    I haven't played VC4 yet, but in 4 days that may change :P.

    One thing that really bugged me about the fourth game, is it seems to have forgotten some of the lore in regards to the Federation Army. Primarily: That Federation Tanks are fast, poorly armored, and cheap with their only advantage being their numbers.....
    ....and our tank is slow, expensive, tanks plenty of damage, and not numerous.

    • @datzfatz2368
      @datzfatz2368 Před 3 lety +3

      well, the Hafen is a Protagonist Tank, hence it is modified and has big boy plotarmour. The one time we actually get to see/use normal Fed Tanks during the assault on Siegval is the Moment in VC1 and 4 where you controll the most Tanks at once, i think 4 including Hafen? Its not really accurate to the lore but thats mostly a gameplay/balancing thing, you cant have your command tank be too fast and too squishy and having too many tanks would kind of take away from the "special" status the Protagonist Tank is supposed to have.
      I mean, regular human scout units that become invincibel to gunfire and explosives just because some Schoolboy in a tank commander uniform yelled some motivational speech at them real loud isnt really lore accurate either but its there for gameplay purposes^^

    I'm gonna be that guy defending Valkyria Chronicles 3. Cause I think 2 is pretty bad. But VC3 in my opinion is the best in the series. I feel like it has the best characters / cast, the best story, and the best game play. While yes 1 and 4 have better map design. VC3 still have creative and well maps as well. Being able to skip enemies turns makes it feel like there less down time during mission. I also prefer find the weapon shop better in and the level system better in 3. It sucks having to split EXP 5 ways (6 in VC4) for classes. I think it's much better it split in time instead. Character fragments are also better in VC3 cause it focuses on an individual character instead of three at time. This makes each individual character more memorable and more realized than the ones found in 1 or 4. While 1 and 4 are also amazing. VC3 has the most QOL in my opinion. And like said a stronger story and cast. The soundtrack is really good as well. Fitting perfectly tonally with the game and overall much better than VC4 soundtrack. And rivals 1 OST. While I don't mean disparage 1 and 4. As I love those games and think there amazing as well. I feel like VC3 tops them in almost every way besides map design.

It's a fun goofy feature but rather distracting and never particularly thematic. They could have done without the fan service. I would instead have liked more different (and slightly more realistic) outfits though. I did dig Alicia's skirt in VC 1 and she was the only soldier who got to wear one.

    i would start by buying all the PS4 Special Editions like the Steel Box and the Europa Edition, but you still can't play them.
    although the mini art book of Europa edition has great quality, you need to buy the
    VK1 400 page Art Book with both PC and PS4 digital version of VK1, and after that the art books of VK2 & VK3, even though you will never play them.
    and only after that you buy VK4 on the Switch + VK1.
    and only then you can start playing on the Switch the FIRST game.
    that's how you start Valkyria Chronicles series.
    (or at the very least that's how i started, but never finished the game, it's all thanks to Jagged Alliance 2 that sparked my curiosity to try as many tactical turn based games as possible, sadly no one ever could ,match or come close to the depth nor complexity of JA2, but VK1 is a good start).

I don't have the patience/knowhow/money to set up a japanese version with a translation patch, but it genuinely looks great. Especially when compared to 2 - both the tone and especially the cast in that game are absolutely just not up to par with the rest of the series. Plus... anime school tropes...

    as someone who have played all 4 of the VC...i think the second one which i agree is inferior in game mechanic,is actually the best in story...it properly ties the story of the first,third and 4th story in its own.
    As u mention, it has a school setting, but that's alright because it makes sense because shit tons of soldier died in the great war so the nation try to recruit more people hence why they all start in the academy...and slowly we can see how everyone grow up during the civil war and that itself already a huge score in my book
    4th story is a mess and easily the weakest game in the whole franchise...the Valkyrie were shoehorned in just to fit it as a valkyria games. The main character is bland and needed to be save by plot device of the story half the time, the villain...well,1 word,disappointing comparing to the 3 previous games.

      Faz Shara vc2 has a better story?!?! Hmmm...the potential of that game's story is great,but the sheer amount of problem I had noticed ruined it.
      an equally good angle to focus would have been on Cordelia and the gallian military handling the rebels along with the lanseal academy rather that as an insignificant foot note.as for lanseal itself I had many problems there too..
      First of is the cliche protagonist and stereotypical characters (for no good reason too.),I think that there should have been a much stronger focus on both the individual characters themselves and the dynamic between each other (far too little was shown of this as well as there being very little of their lives before/outside the usual military/school setting (we get small details like zeri use to live close to randgriz and has a dad who was a mechanic for service.he has pride for his race and can be dismissive or judgemental to others for obvious reasons.that is all and he his literally one if not the most well defined character in the whole game,a character who has anywhere near as much detail is franca,annasette, alliase and Cosette.most of the others don't has nearly as much and so come of as irrelevant, boring or forgettable.
      Most of the character growth is on alliase,Cosette and avan.very little besides cliche stories where the ending can be seen a mile away for most of the side characters after the first scene of them (a few like Marion or noel were unexpected but not too surprising).
      Then there is the rebels.one question that I had was that when the hell did frigging mind control come in (dirk or Leon apparently knew what was happening yet was mind controlled into fighting for the rebels?WTF!
      When gilbert had his chance but did not kill the archduchess,I was thinking why.I mean wasn't that the whole point of the rebels,to clean the nation of a "faulty ruler"?.as you can see,I had many issues with the story as a whole and though it would be amazing if they were fixed.

    Sweeping V2 under the rug for the "it's unrealistic" reason is a tad unfair, no?
    *spoilers*
    Especially considering the plot twist that the entire academy was just a front and in reality military government established it for the sole purpose of human experimentation and producing artificial valkyries by stealthily poisoning students with ragnite and sending them on frontline missions for testing purposes. It's basically the X-men college, how come pupils with tower shields and claymores/morgenshterns are breaking immersion while valkyries (which are far more imbalanced and had a hand in V1 and V4) get a free pass?
    P.S.: branching classes were a nice touch, as they gave more nuance compared to simply changing out your weapons in between missions (something that you were still free to do in V2). On one hand you have a single class that grows stronger in stats but that's in, on the other hand you can promote your shocktrooper into a light/heavy machinegunner or commando, which have their own distinct playstyles. Another good thing is that pretty much all the classes have something unique to put on the table (with the sole exception of heavy scouts that are indeed trash).

    Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is without a doubt, a great game.
    However, I found certain aspects to be kind of frustrating. Allow me to elaborate.
    - A cover mechanic, but cannot cover behind crates or building corners.
    - Shooting is based on a hidden % you have no control over.
    - Enemies seemingly have eyes on the back of their heads but your soldiers do not. Enemy facing away dodges my sniper shot.
    - "Strategy" is involved, yet all levels are a predetermined path.
    - Snipers & lancers are slow & nearly useless. Terrible hit %.
    - Upgrades are arbitrary when it comes to tiny stat increases. +1 Defense.
    - Grenade throw range is very short & I gotta be super close to heal teammates.
    - Skill system is annoying to memorize. Kamikaze? Panic?
    - Soldier X likes Y, A, & B? More memorizing, I don't care.
    - Enemy gets 20+ soldiers & I can only use around 10.
    I stopped playing after 20+ hours of gameplay. I enjoy the story, but it's going to be a while before I come back. All these tiny details added up too much.
    Am I insane? 🤔

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan Před 5 lety +2

      I don't think you're insane, I just think most of what you said isn't true. Let me see...

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan Před 5 lety +8

      You definitely can get cover behind just about anything. But this isn't a third person action shooter. What exactly are you expecting to happen when you hide behind a building corner?
      It isn't a hidden %. It's a variation based on the size or your weapon's firing zone, like most games with gun fire. It's easy to see exactly how big that is and guarantee body shots at many distances, but it's a risk reward system. Do you chance the misses by aiming for the head or shoot center mass to guarantee every hit? As for dodging, they don't dodge, you just missed. Aim better or get closer.
      Enemy AI is generally as competent (or incompetent sometimes) as allied AI.
      If you mean the map layout when you say level, that's true of any strategy RPG. Literally any. The strategy is in the units you use, which you level, how you gear them up and what orders you give them.
      Snipers are maybe the best unit in the game. Not even sure how they'd be useless. And while lancers are definitely less useful, it's a strategy game. When they're not useful, you don't use them. When you need a lancer, they're extremely useful. The great thing about Valkyria is how exp works. You distribute it how you see fit, so you can keep lancers in fighting form for when you need them without bringing them along. It's great.
      You say upgrades are arbitrary. This might just be a misuse of the word, because they're definitely not arbitrary. There's a method. Maybe insignificant is what you meant or unimpactful? That would be closer to true. But that's to make it not 100% essentially to have the newest level for a unit to compete.
      Grenades are a very potent item. They're not meant to be thrown from very far so as to keep a gameplay balance. If they could be thrown from further, they would be wildly over powered. Same with healing. VC4 has a grenadier class and it is kind of overpowered even with its limitations.
      Skill system, soldier preferences.. I don't know what to say there. It's par for the course in strategy RPGs to have a lot of stuff to figure out, study and remember. The gameplay is usually about complex systems and strategy rather than blazing fast action. It's a hallmark of the genre. I can definitely see why someone might not like that, but it's definitely just a personal preference rather than a bad thing in the game. Also, the game isn't hard enough for you to need to worry about those anyway. They're more necessary on the harder difficulties or just for fun.
      Enemies get more soldiers. I mean. Like.. have you ever played a video game? I'd say that's an element of about 99.9% of video games that have enemies. I can't even think of one game (outside of 1 on 1 fighting games, and even those frequently have event battles with more enemies) off hand where the enemy side doesn't generally get more. And that's just game design. You play Mario, there's more than one goomba per stage. This is a strategy game and you have a human brain, which makes you better equipped than the AI. If they didn't get more troops, it would be too easy. Also... This game actually has a story reason for it, too. It's basically a David and Goliath tale. Your small nation has a few small platoons vs. an overwhelmingly more powerful empire filled with thousands upon thousands of soldiers in a war that seems all but lost at the start. Your group is a small, tactical unit making strategic hits at the oppressively more powerful foe.
      I know I typed a lot, but honestly, this game and this genre really aren't for everyone. It's okay not to like it.

      @@DeltathRiylaan Well, when you put it that way. I was probably playing it wrong. Typically, I'll stay with my team I chose at the start of the mission.
      I mostly have scouts & assaults then switch out at bases when needed because snipers & lancers can't keep up. But that leads to them staying near bases so I can switch out quickly if needed.
      I quit after my soldiers went Elite, then I went in & got decimated. I'll still return to playing, maybe after watching some CZcams tips.
      I swear: enemy facing away. I snipe head. He goes prone. Miss. Gets back up. 😑
      Ah screw it. I'm going back to playing tomorrow. 😲
      I still like VC.

      @@paradoxxor7770 After I typed that all out, I was worried no one would end up reading such a wall of text. Now I'm glad I did, though. I hope you have a blast playing! To be honest, talking about it has me wanting to replay it. I picked it up for Switch since it was only $15 and I thought it would be nice to replay on the go. I may just have to fire it up before I sleep tonight... =D

      @@DeltathRiylaan I'm glad VC4 came out on Switch. I'll pick that up after I finish VC1 on PS4. Anyway thanks for your input, it was very informative. 😃

    Swords are not unrealistic. Japanese soldiers still carried swords in WWII, even if primarily a ceremonial thing. Your opinions aren't fact dude

      Not an effective weapon, is my point. It’s just a fact, not an opinion.

      @@YSN it's a fictional universe with magical Valkyries and teenagers driving tanks into battle because their parents piloted it in a previous war. Effective goes out the window at that point.
