Everyone just keeps saying “Valkyria Chronicles 4 is just VC 1.5.” And I’m like...where’s the problem? lol VC is a masterpiece, one of my favorite JRPGs ever. Can’t wait to dive in next week!
I get so triggered. It's like they don't remember the fact that they couldn't play VC2 and 3 and they never heard of Revolutions.
We want the old system with a new story and more slightly more mechanics. Looks like we got what we wanted to me. I'm so hype.
GriFFonRec4 Plus that VC2 and VC3 pretty much sucked and you always compared it to VC1 which was such a masterpiece. And then Sega gave us this Revolutions bullsh.

Awesome battles, incredible music, compelling storyline, and memorable characters. This is the best game I have played in 2018. I love the Squad Stories as well.
- Curtis, Eileen, and Laurent’s was so heartwarming. Curtis is definitely one of my favorite soldiers in the game.
- Rebecca, Mabel, and Fleuret’s was about how three sassy women became great friends. Love these gals so much!
Got it pre ordered on Switch, also can't wait for the 1st VC to be released on Switch later this fall too
It's just unfortunate that it took Sega 11 years to realize that is what most gamers wanted out of the valkyria chronicles license. We didn't want it downgraded to the psp, we didn't want a complete change in gameplay mechanics. We just wanted the same gameplay with some minor additions with a brand new story just with the same core gameplay basics of the first game for the ps3. Thankfully we got it and it seems like it outshines the original in every regard. I look forward to playing this awesome title myself.
Although I liked VC2 despite being the weakest of the 4 games, I think Sega did jump the gun too quick when they made the jump to the PSP. With the system's limitations, I think it would of been better making the PSP games as a spin-off title of some sorts.
if you played VC3 on PSP you wouldnt have written that. Story, characters, gameplay, sidequests for the team members, class changing (way better then in VC2) and customization (gaining plans from unique enemies for gear, unlocking class potentials etc..), all are top in that game. My only issue was with the map sizes really but that was due the limitation on that console. VC2 was fun, but not great. 3 was the best so far in my opinion. there is a fan translaton of that game on the net coz sadly it never came out in english
the game features a kind of "Dirty dozen" type punishement brigade always getting suicide missions, acting paralell of the first games timeline sometimes even together with the first games cast, sometimes rescuing kids who became the cast of the second game
just watch the intro on youtube and also listen to the main theme (strong wild arms vibes for some reason) try to not fall in love with the music
if you left this out then give it a go on an emulator if you have to, it is worth it
It is also a shame that with the success of Fire Emblem, I can only imagine what the SRPG Shining Force could have been.

I had never heard of the games until I saw the announcement for Switch, I pre-ordered it a few months back, looking forward to playing it on Switch.
I just finished the demo on Switch I can't wait to play the full experience. Love this game, even though I never played any VC game before
Good to see they are back to the old system. Pretty excited to place my model of the Hafen on display. Sega shouldn't screw this series up as this is their own fire emblem equivalent

As someone who absolutely loved the original (one of my favorite games of all time) i was already sold on VC4 but after playing the (massive) demo my hype level went through the roof.Unfortunately i'm still quite early on Dragon Quest XI so i will not start VC4 before i finish that game (also a masterpiece) but i'm definitely getting it on day 1 (that CE is too awesome) in order to support this franchise. I think this is a great era for JRPG fans!

I don’t know if you got it or not but I can whole heartily recommend the series. I’ve been playing it since its inception and I’ve played all of them. (Except for 3 which never came out in the states)
I am so looking forward to playing this. A real return to form for the series in my opinion.

Your comments on the presentation here got me thinking. When it comes to resolution, I am sometimes wondering whether I should be thankful for my somewhat crappy eyes. ^^ I genuinely do not notice any difference at all between 720p and 1080p. I pretty much only ever notice the major steps - SD to HD to 4K and the like. Which makes the Switch almost an ideal fit for me. ^^

I will miss the techs and fencers though. Charging enemy lines with a shield and sword feels really badass.

I was just curious if you had played the PSP VC games? You talked about how much better the story is than VC1 which had tonal issues. But VC3 had a very strong story and I was wondering how you compered that to this game?

When upgrading units, do you have to farm material drops from specific enemies? I absolutely hated that about VC2.
Nope! Only XP is needed and you get that from any and every battle :)

You have to change the Switch to Auto for surround sound to get vocal audio at all. On surround sound mode it drops the vocals completely. No idea why.

I'm so glad they didn't mess up this game and even made it pretty good. The franchise deserved this. But now that the franchise has been revitalized I hope for more innovation in the next game

Was always interested in Valkyria Chronicles since it seemed like a fun strategy game (also alone from watching it I weirdly got some FE vibes and I love Fire Emblem) , sadly I've never gotten to play this game either due to no money, not being available on the consoles I own or being released "too late" on PC for me to actually give it a shot cause it seemed "aged" (aged is not the right word since the visuals aren't exactly a thing that ages but I dunno I am weird like that).
I hope this will be a challenging game and a good starting point for me since I won't be missing anything if its true that it is not really that connected to earlier titles.

great game I got the collectors edition for the switch and I got the regular ps4 version.. The ps4 definitely has better resolution/etc but switch is still fun
You mentioned that I could play this game without playing the others, but would there be some references that will make sense if I play the other games? I am really intrigued by this series and want to get into it
This game takes place at the same time as the events in Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 3 but they all take place from different viewpoints and in different parts of the world. VC3 didn't even get a release outside Japan so it's pretty safe to say that each game is quite self-contained.
There may be a reference here or there but I don't think it's anything that would enhance the experience, and you'd get those same references by playing this one first and then playing the others afterwards. :)

If you do want to get into it, VC1 Remastered is heading to switch, and is already on PS4 and PC. VC3 isnt officially relseased in english, but there is a fan translation patched version of it that you can download for a PSP Emulator

I will miss the World map from VC3 I prefer that over the book pages. Also are there cameo from Nameless or Squad 7?
Under the review embargo I'm unable to talk about anything that happens after Chapter 8, all I can tell you for now is that there were a couple of references/easter eggs between chapters 1-8 but nothing major. There have been DLC extra stories announced which is full of cameos though.

finally, a game that makes me want to get the Switch
There is only one thing I can't get myself to like in this game's battle system, the max number of turns you always have to finish an encounter. OK, up until now, that wasn't a problem to me, but i like to play my strategy games without this hurry feeling.
Is there a Japanese voice/subtitle option on the Switch version?
Just ordered it wasnt going to get any games save Soul Calibur 6 for a while because I have way to many and its getting stupid but Valkyria Chronicles 1 is my second favourite game of all time so I couldnt resist ordering this one even if I wont get to play it until mid October due to being away.
It was £18 on uk Eshop sale so far not bad
3:26 If they can aim. I swear them and the Tank's main gun are shit when it comes to aiming, you literally need to aim at the ground or slightly above the enemy to even hit them

How is the handheld performance btw? I haven't seen anyone talk about it at all. I am a bit worried as when I played the demo the framerate dropped drastically during the foggy section and I wonder if it affect the rest of the game too

It looks great in both TV and handheld mode, though I couldn't tell you exactly what resolution it's running at, it didn't seem to drop to crazy low blurry levels at any point in my experience. I did encounter slowdown every now and then but this would generally clear itself up very quickly, or if not, a slight camera adjustment was usually enough to instantly bring it back to normal."

Two and three were PSP exclusives. With three never leaving Japan.
Stories are all stand alone I believe. Two did have some cameos from the first game.

To bad they didn't keep the class system from VC3. It was nice being able put any character in any class.
I don't see why.. You have more options with the VC3 system. For instance: you almost always put the main characters in battle for the extra CP but sometimes you don't need a lancer, sniper, engineer etc. This happened alot in VC1, with me often leaving Largo in the back doing nothing. That's just one example. I really don't see any down side to it...

I'm not sure where you saw different prices but the Switch version isn't more expensive than any other version. They are exactly the same price: $59.99 for the regular/launch edition, $99.99 for the Memoirs From Battle Edition.

Sega EU quoted £49.99 as the price for all platforms when they announced the release date, and from what I can see on retailers sites like GAME, their price is listed as £49.99 but then they've got a sale on specifically for the PS4/Xbox One versions.
The UK also seems to be the only place in the world these platform specific discounts are happening, so I'm not really sure what's going on. There shouldn't be a price disparity, they should all be the publisher quoted price of £49.99. 😕

Why must the PC version come out so late?!?
It still confuses the hell out of me how people keep saying that Sega has lost its way, or is finally getting back in the game, when they've been pretty consistently releasing some of the best games of all time in multiple genres, on multiple consoles, especially after acquiring Atlus,.
Like, I wish that Sonic Forces was more than just mediocre, but hey, look's like someone left a pile of Persona 5, Shin Megami Tensei 4, Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse, Persona 4 Dancing All Night, Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight, Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight, Project Diva X, Phantasy Star Nova, Phantasy Star Online 2, Yakuza 0 Yakuza Kiwami Yakuza 6, Yakuza Kiwami 2, etc... just lying around here.

Ok, so, under the review embargo I'm not allowed to talk about anything that happens after Chapter 8. I can tell you that I haven't noticed any censorship in chapters 1-8 but I won't be able to answer your specific question about the hot bath scene until launch day.
