    Although I won't go as far to say that this game doesn't deserve its reputation, I will say it is a game with many unique elements and bold changes from what could have been a formulaic sequel.

    My only issue is that grinding for the certifications is annoying but it’s a fine game

    I agree with your final sentiment a lot. It is not the best game out there, and is also by far the worst of the 4 games, but it still is a solid game that is very unique and is worth a shot. I had a blast playing through it and spending countless hours building up my squad, but unfortunately like you, I dont have time for that anymore. I just beat the 4th game which was amazing and was planning on going back to this one as this one was actually the first game I played in the series. I have a sweet spot for it. Maybe having less time is a good thing as this game will last me longer lol.

    This is actually my favorite of the three games released in the US because I like the various improvements from the first game. Plus I really like being able to select my protagonist's class and don't understand why they reverted to a set class for 4

    • @blackkat101
      @blackkat101 Před 2 lety

      VC1 - 5 classes, everyone at a set class, all characters in the same class though level up together.
      VC2 - 5 base classes, 10 secondary classes and 20 advanced classes, Only Alan can be anything, but with 1 base, 2 middle and 4 advanced classes that each character can choose from, there is a lot of choice, but tied behind RNG drops and everyone is separate. You get a new character, you need to start over from scratch, making it so that unless you really like the new character and have the time, you will rarely use new characters outside of maybe once for the novelty. Each class has potentials that once learned from using them enough can be mixed and matched to make truely broken characters, but takes dozens of hours to do so and lots of luck with RNGesus to get the class change mats.... There are multiple potentials to unlock with each class too....
      VC3 - 8 base classes, anyone can be any class, unlike Alan being the only one able to in VC2, however each character still has a "preferred class" (or two) that offers bonus stats for keeping them as they should. Classes have 3 ranks and like the previous VC2, has potentials that can be unlocked for each, but unlike VC2, only a single potential to unlock with each class (most have easy conditions to unlock too). OH, classes no longer level in this game, but instead, you level stats (HP, AP, DEF, ACC, and ATT).
      VC4 - 6 classes, using the same system that VC1 did, going back to its roots. Each their specific class. Characters level up together with their class. Note that VC1 was the best selling of the series (given that VC1 didn't do well at the start, became a cult classic, then VC2 bombed in NA leaving VC3 to not be released outside JPN) it is obvious that SEGA would want to go with the safer choice of VC1's system. Because it was simpler, it's also easier to implement too.
      Personally, I like VC3's system the best (also think it is the best game in the series storywise too....).
      However I don't mind VC1 and VC4's system in that it makes it super easy to use new characters without feeling bad.
      VC2, while was a good idea, reaaaaally didn't need the whole diploma RNG system. If it didn't have that and say just had the leveling (say hit lvl 20 or 30 of a class since max was 50) to unlock the higher versions should have been fine enough. Would have enjoyed it a lot more. Balancing that VC3 did to things like Fencers/Maulers is also needed and like VC3, there is NO need for Mortars to be separate classes. No one really uses them anyway other than once to try them out.
      Don't get me wrong though, I did love VC2 (love all the VC main titles... we shall not speak of Revolution.....). I liked the civil war, dealing with all the aftermath of the first game. But the main 3 characters were quite terrible. I personally disliked their voice acting throughout the game (played originally on my personal copy on the PSP, but all later playthroughs played on a modded UNDUB version of the game to put the original JP VA's back in reaaaally helps). And of course the diploma RNG drops is terrible.
      I do think both VC2 and VC3 executed gameplay really well, especially for being on the PSP. I liked how they handled maps with the camps having much more importance and making defending them a challenge (and necessary for once). I did like most of the new classes and it was so easy to cheese/break the game. Especially with the existence of the VC2 Fencers (VC3 once are still powerful, but nerfed in a lot of places, like much much less armor and a shield 1/3rd the size).
      I really missed the uniqueness of the VC1's leveling all classes together when I first played VC2. I really did make one not really want to take the time with the new characters since you already invested so much into the first ones you get (I of course did everything, but I can did feel that and can see why many hated it).

      I'm sure I will love VC3 if Sega ever re-releases it and remembers to bring it to the US this time. I would probably see how far I could get with an all-Engineer force though whether I would do that before or after my first serious run at the campaign I'm not sure. I would definitely make my Squad Lead an Engineer just like I did in VC2

    • @blackkat101
      @blackkat101 Před 2 lety +1

      @@roguerifter9724 If they never release it ever in an English version, this is one of the few games that has an amazing full English fan translation. So if you cannot be bothered to learn a new language to play a JP copy, this is a good option.
      You can even have a good conscience about playing it if you own an official copy of the game like me, before you patch a rom (that you obviously dumped yourself) to patch with the fan translation.
      VC3 even has two endings, as there are two main female characters and you get to make a choice on who you end up with (no dating elements in the game, it's a simple choice that is obvious at a certain point in the game and branches a couple of the missions with some different options and dialogue). This situation is also seen in other parts of the game as the game gives you branching options at many points in the story which have you do one mission or another (though they do meet back up at the same point, so these don't really change how the story goes other than for that individual point in the game).

    My only problem with this game: THE GODDAMN CRAZY GRINDING

  • @storyteller8772
    @storyteller8772 Před 3 lety +8

    This was my very first Valkyria Chronicles game so that maybe why i defend it so hard. Considering the other 3 games, yes its the worst in my opinion. But it is still a very great and fun game and i easily put 300 hours+ into it at this point. And i find myself going back to it from time to time again. It is just really fun. And i really think the hate towards it is undeserved. To add to that. I liked the story. I don't care how many people would blast me for this opinion. But i really liked the civil war story. And playing 1 and now 4 later down the line just made that love grow. While the other games had a more serious story line, this one was just great for me. I could never understand how people could say that you should skip this game as it is really good with its own fair share of Unique mechanics which make it truly worth while. The only thing i will warn you of is, that you shouldn't expect a experience like any of the other VC games. As this one just hits differently. Its not as dramatic or some would say dark in its tone or the such like the other games. But in my opinion. Its just good that way, and i wouldn't want it to change.

  • @huntersorce20
    @huntersorce20 Před 2 lety +1

    I like the gameplay elements that VC2 added. in vc1, you could win basically every map with just the cp granting characters and scouts. scout rush was so broken in vc1 that once I realized how it removed any sort of strategy from the game, i almost put it down entirely. in vc2, although the smaller maps and the map spitting into segments were basically artifacts of putting the game on psp, I like the strategy they introduced. since the maps are smaller, classes with lower ap are more viable. interception fire and base defense are also once again a strategy, since the tighter pathways and instant reinforcement from captured bases mean you need to capture bases and can't just use scouts to run around all the enemies, grenade a base, and win. since you can only have 6 (i think it was 6) total characters deployed and only 5 on a single map segment, you have to prioritize where to send your troops, and whether to hold them there or park them in base for defense or retreat them to free up a slot somewhere else.

    Já vi gente criticando o jogo por ter uma historia chata... fui jogar e vi alguns dos melhores personagens de jogos que já vi e olha que eu já tinha jogado o 3 antes.
    Com eu gosto de animes, esse jogo é perfeito. Tem os elementos de mecha, tiro em terceira pessoa, tático RPG e visual novel. É um jogo brilhante e você vê o carinho nos detalhes, como os pequenos tanques passando na tela principal, o Yearbook muito bonito com todas as cenas pela qual já passou, coleta de medalhas, etc. Eu ainda estou em Junho no jogo é posso dizer que estou gostando tanto quanto o VC 3.

    I'm reading a lot of comments about grinding. Not due to difficulty, but progression? I'm considering playing this. I just hope I don't get 20 hours into the game and quit from boredom. Fingers crossed that I'll enjoy it. Thanks for the review.

    For anyone who talks about not needed to upgrade your classes, try beating this game with ONLY tier 1 classes. I doubt you can. You need tier 2 possibly even tier 3 classes for some missions, looking at you August end story mission.

    I think the main problem I have with VC 2 is the whole 'school anime' vibe, most of the characters seem like trope token-like characters you'd see in a slice of life anime based in a typical high school. The main female character being the 'blonde ditzy school girl that wants to make friends while the other male main character is the typical 'i wear glasses therefore smart cold condescending. While VC 1 had its trope characters they also had people of all ages and from different backgrounds.
    That being said the storyline and the civil war aspect is quite nice, just really wish they had made if a console like the first, thankfully 3 and 4 were better with the 4 moving away from hand helds.

    I've got mixed feelings on the game.
    As far as gameplay goes I liked a lot of things they did. New classes, branching classes, vehicles being completely customizable, smaller maps that made you have to think about leaving someone behind to guard a camp. The aim on Lancers improving. More weapons and a few new enemy types.
    I do agree about the grind. It got very tedious after a while.
    The story was a mixed bag. Not bad but like you said there were some elements I felt it could have capitalize on.
    As far as characters go. Colette was cute but they tried to shove this dark backstory on her and it just didnt work. Zeri was an ass but became better as the game went by. Julia I just didnt like even after her comupantance occurs. Plus they started a vague romantic subplot with zeri and her that barely is touched on. Same goes for Colette and avan it just comes out of nowhere.
    Then theres the mc avan.... not sure what they wanted to do with him. At times hes ok but at other times hes mind numbing stupid. I do like him but at the same time he can be infuriating at times.
    The best thing besides the combat was the squad stories for each character. While yes they may be trophs, at least they had a character with a story as compared to the original vc squad mates.
    Overall the games a mix bag. I still enjoy it but it's a game I play in small bursts. I think it works better that way

    I thought this game was ok, but it's leveling system and requirements, to me were a little hard to wrap my head around and while i thought the plot was ok, i couldn't get that much invested with the characters and the school setting. I DID like seeing the characters again in VC3 Extended edition though.

    "Not as bad as everyone says?" "Negative reputation?" Honestly, on what planet? Valkyria Chronicles II is/has been VERY well received by the majority of critics and consumers. I've never seen or read anyone talk down about it. There may be things where people may have a grievance with, as all games do, but to say that it's a "bad" game? Never.

    This game feels like Fire Emblem: Three Houses ahead of its time. I loved the class system and wealth of customization options with your weapons, tank, and class. I liked the cast of characters and what they were going for in the academy setting, but they did not fully flesh out the setting like FE Three did.
    The worst part about the game is it's story. I thought the story was solid in the first half. It's in the second half where it becomes exceedingly generic and boring.

  • @robinmattheussen2395
    @robinmattheussen2395 Před rokem +1

    I for one absolutely loathe the stereotypical anime mumbo jumbo you find in many JRPGs, and as such I don't like it in this game either. But I also think people give the first game way too much credit for its story elements. I think all the Valkyria games (including the first one and the fourth entry) have extremely childish depictions of war and violent conflict, up to the point where I had to often outright ignore the story elements in order to enjoy the games. I know many people are going to think I'm overreacting when I say this, but when you choose a serious subject like this as a backdrop (essentially WW2 in this case), it's insulting to my intelligence as a gaming adult to serve up stories this weak, schmaltzy and childish. To me, all the Valkyria games have bad stories and bad storytelling, so it's something I have to get past in all the games in the series.

    It's actually pretty bad. It isn't until the Darcsen Liberation that the game breaks it's own rules, letting story boss enemies switch classes and use up most enemy movement turns, wiping your squad. It's unfair and screams retarded game devs.
    *That's the entire game after that point.* 🤷
    Valkryia Chronicles 2 was garbage in 2010, and it's garbage in 2023. Franchise should of stayed dead.
