Breaking Down the Classes in Valkyria Chronicles 2

    One of the boldest changes from its predecessor is the almost complete overhaul of the class system.
    But does it fix all the issues with the original or just add new issues?

    I like that there was 20 end-classes, while also there being a 19 unit limit per group (excluding the tank). It means you can field 1 of every class except one, and can associate a unique class for that character.
    For example, I don't see "an anti-tank sniper: Melissa", but rather, "Melissa, the designated anti-tank sniper". It ends up being a way to make mechanically generic and numerous characters as unique characters with their own major traits.
    Course this is likely just an unintended side effect, and goes out the window for early game and if you decide to pack duplicate classes.

    My only gripe is that Lancers got really shafted in terms of class options. Every other class has an option of choosing to be the same class with higher stats, or picking a new gameplay style, like scouts choosing between higher stats or the grenade launcher of the heavy scout. But both Lancers and Mortarers only have the option of choosing between more damage or more AP. Imagine Lancers getting a subclass where their lances did piercing to armor at the cost of damage, it can drill through tanks to hit the radiator from the front, but more often than not won't do enough damage to 1 shot more armored targets. This class can be for whenever you don't really have the option to maneuver around a tank to hit it from behind like you normally would. While Mortarers would get a class that lets them call in mini artillery strikes, similar to what you can do if you equip an artillery on your tank. I feel neither of these would be too game breaking and would offer more variety in classes.

    The class system is good but flawed thanks to it's very grind heavy class change materials, i really like of what they are in VC 3 a LOT more

    The commando and the elite are my favorites and as I always say " there is no such thing as too much classes in a game". I do agree that the mortar branch was meh

    I feel like... some classes are made specifically to counter certain strategies. I'm talking about PvP here.
    For example, because Heavy Gunners are tanky enough to survive one shot. There will be a scenario where 2 "well-spaced" Heavy gunners could stop any push.
    In the other hand 'SpecTech' counters that strats. SpecTechs could stop any Interception fire, while maintaining the ability to Disarm traps.
    Disabling the defenses in the area, to set up for a Tank push.

    I'd love to see an VC 2 port of this on PC which remasters it and makes the maps longer to give Fencers and Maulers less versatility; because the maps will be remastered to be much larger.

      a little bit larger is fine, but not too much larger. otherwise you run into the same issue vc1 had, scout rush. the maps in vc1 were large enough and spread out enough that in most levels, since a lot of the time the goal was to capture a base, not kill all enemies, a scout could literally run around all the enemies, grenade the base, and run in and capture before any interception fire could hurt, let alone kill it.

    The problem is that many of the sub-classes were pointless, like why do you need an Elite Sniper and an AT Sniper when you could just have Snipers and either equip them a three-shot rifle or an AT rifle, or why can't you just equip either AT or Mortar Lance to any Lancer as you do in VC1, 3, and 4. Unnecessary class branching for something that could be solved easily with just different weapon types. Same for the "Mobile vs Heavy" gimmick, you could have light rifles, mortars, etc. with lower damage input and heavy weapons with strong power and extra capabilities like Grenade Rifles but that have a mobility penalty on the unit.
    VC3 basically took the classes that did feel somewhat unique and had more purpose: Armored Tech, Gunner, and Fencer, removed all the other sub-classes that were just pointless extra mobility vs. extra firepower, or Infantry killer vs. AT killer, and merged Anthem skills into Engineers.

    The Gunner really made a lot of sense as an addition to the existing roster. I'm surprised VC4 doesn't have them though I suppose the Grenadier fills that defensive niche somewhat.

      When I found out that they took out the class system in VC4 I feel really disappointed ngl
      Could've kept it style of 3 or something.

    The reason why fencers exist in this game: there is no such thing called Shotguns in Valkyria Chronicle!!

    Great review. Whats your favorite game in the series? Loved both the first and part 4 which I completed. I am far into part 3 on emulation and its awesome. My only issue is the divided maps, making the connection points confusing at times. Part 3 adds alot of cool mechanics though. Is part 2 as good as 3 and the others would you say?

      I'm a bit exaggerating, but still.
      VC is probably the video game series/standalone with the most unused potential I ever played. And it's a bit... frustrating ?

    Heavy Scout are the worst class in the game, sure they had slightly better offense than regular scout but their defense are horrendously low which is funny because Heavy scout are supposed to be 'Heavy' and has better defense.
