Y'know, I realize that a lot of people in the west are going to wonder why the hell the series just jumps straight from 1 to 4.

Nice review. I have the Steam version of VC1, just got a Playstation TV recently for $40 from Gamestop, and this game just happens to be on sale for $5 on the PSN store this weekend, seems like a perfect fit!

Great video. Of course now there is a 4th entry and the complete edition is available on Xbox store for 17 bucks (Includes all DLC skirmishes, campaigns, core game). Awesome game as well. There is also a part 3 that was released in Japan only. It plays great with a translation patch and PSP emulator on a PC. Its not quite plug and play though and takes some steps to get working. Runs great on the emulator though and is an awesome entry with alot of things added from the previous games. Its also the longest of the games. I still have yet to play this second entry but looks great. Have to finish 3 first, ha ha.
Valkyria Chronicles III is a better game in every way. I hope you look at the Fan English Translated Extra Edition some day.
The story in 3... is okay. It's better than the second one, does a better job of characterization, but it tends to drag on on some chapters and ends too abruptly, if I am going to compliment it for something is that it does a good job at covering some of the plot holes of the first game, mainly on why the war ended up being such a stalemate, and I like the fact that the unit knows what is failure as it fails quite a few times and aknowledge the war for what it is, a war. A lot of the maps are recycled maps and the UI is less intuitive than the second game but on the other hand we get better unit variety though they nerfed lancers a little too much imo. The antagonists are mostly interesting except the sexualized nearly characterless one and some certain character who does a 180° degree turn when it comes to his motivations, it was too excessive. Overall, I like valkyria chronicles 3 for what it is and I completely aknowledge its defaults. I think the game would have been much better if it was shorter and if it wasn't for the hardware limitations
I played VC 3 and bored to death, I spend more then 100 hours in VC 2
I can see why tbh. It does use alot of assets from VC2 but the story is what kept me going.
Well Valkyria Chronicles 1 has been re-released on PS4 so there is a sign that it might happen. heck I'm not the only one who thinks an HD remake of Valkyria Chronicles 2 & 3 on PS4 would be awesome right?

Excellent review. I bought the first game and enjoying it a lot. Also got the psp emulation for both 2nd and 3rd game.
I'm currently playing the second game only because my emulator on my Android phone can't emulate PS3 games but can do PSP games. I've never played any of the other Valkyria Chronicles games but I definitely like this one.
I wouldn't mind with a remaster of VC 2&3 (in on package)...

I used to dislike VC2 a whole lot but that changed when Valkyria Revolution came... now that was a train wreck.
in comparison VC2 didn't look so bad anymore.

i really hope they will release part 2 and 3 also as a re-release for ps4. my psp broke down. and i really want to play part 3 for once. trophies for both would be pretty fun and challenging! :)
Those games could seriously benefit from an HD re-release. there is hope since the first game was re-released on PS4.

Berix I use VGChartz, which admittedly might not be the most accurate figures, but it's the most accessible in terms of approximate sales for games.
Great review Blondy. I also had the same issue with the second game too much animu too much but the game play was improved at least and hey we got to see some old favorites again. Because of that, it got me to play the first game and third back to back and now I love the franchise right next to two other SRPGs, Disgaea and Fire Emblem. With that said I have to ask, Sega stop whoring the blue blur and give VC some love.
MrDarkSol SEGA/Sonic Team also needs to make a new Phantasy Star. Or maybe, even a CROSSOVER! But seriously, they do need to take a break from Sonic.

I really liked the first game but I got stuck at one point and to make matters worse my PS3 died on me a little after which resulted in losing all my progress. I still haven't felt compelled enough to go back to it but I assume one day I will and when that day comes I will play 2 aswell. Good review, the writing being inferior is a shame but at least the game is fun to play.

actually the colorblindness only works on red, turning anything red into a bluish grey color. play mgsv, if you get severely injured and *quickly* fix the dislocated bone or seal up a bleeding wound, it will hurt so much that you will see everything red turn bluish grey. it can happen mentally as well. doesnt have to be physical
Vague spoilers for the game: Even with that, the "colorblindness" in VCII does not work like that. It literally made a person COMPLETELY black and white colorblind just from a traumatic incident of seeing blood several years ago. And the worst part is that it magically gets cured in a overcoming PTSD cliched moment. Regardless of real life blood colorblindness, the way its handled in this game is still really dumb.

you can actually get vc2 and revolution on PS3 on the playstationstore. what sucks is that you can't get the first game on playstation store and the physical copy is rare 4 ps3.
Hayo, I just noticed that the going online price for the physical copy of VC1 on PS3 has dropped to about $20 these days-!!
I'm starting to see a few used copies in my local retail stores as well.
Regardless, the PS4 remastered edition is the quintessential way to play this gem of a game, even if its improvements are negligible.

To this day i still have no idea how cadets like Zeri and Mischlitt (characterized as straight-A students) ended up in Class G. The game doesn't even bother to try and explain that.

I realise this is six months after the fact but I recently beat Valkyria 2 so I have it fresh in my head. Spoilers ahead:
Zeri and Mischlitt are Darcsens, and up until very recently, Lanseal did not accept Darcsens as applicants. This much is established quite early in the game, especially whenever Juliana (Class A's chair) gets on her high horse around Zeri. So despite their characterisation as intelligent and diligent people who are perfectly capable of acing exams, it's quite likely they were dumped in Class G because of their race. On a related note, Helmut is an Imperial exchange student that nobody trusts, and Zahum, despite being royalty, is from another country completely removed from Gallia and the Empire and the pair of them still land in Class G.
Now the real kicker is that the alphabetical naming system was not actually in reference to a given student's performance on their entry exams - though the academy claimed it was. In reality, it was a way of organising and grading how likely a student was to become a successful Artifical Valkyria - should they later be selected for the experiment. This was worked out based on the results of the same "aptitude test" that established that Avan could be any unit class. A to F grades ranked people from best to worst candidates for experimentation. The people in Class G were all anomalies that couldn't be graded based on the results, but since the academy claimed that the letter grades were based on exam performance, Class G ended up with the reputation of being the absolute worst.
I love this game, i really do! But, lets be honest, half of class G wouldn't make it five minutes on the battlefield. Im sorry, i love these characters and the variety, but half the team would realistically be the first to die on the field of battle.
