    I bought a 12 hp recently, and took it out last weekend to get it past the 30 hour "break in" point. At 2 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, we shut down to fish, and when we went to restart, the motor crank malfunctioned. Turns out that half of the 10 mm bolts around the motor were loose. One bolt came completely out, and with that the other 2 brackets holding the pull start broke off. I could not get new brackets, so i had a friend "manufacture" some. Now I also see that the seal around the prop is leaking oil, (with just 32 hours on the motor). I am NOT a happy camper, (or boater)!

      You are the type of person that buys a Kia and wonders why it didn't last to 100k miles. This is one of the things where "you get what you pay for" just like a Kia.

    I had a 9.9 tohatsu when they first came out lat eighties it was a beast I always regretted selling it. I’m not too fond of two stroke cause of the pollution they omit but two strokes have that punch that’s soo much fun and this motor is a bargain at nine hundred on Amazon it’s over half less than anew tohatsu four stroke and i suspect it’s lighter there’s just less mass. Nice video it was informative and helpful the loose steering thing is problematic that might be a game changer .maybe there’s a tension adjustment most have this it could be hidden a bit. ☮️👍

  • @shanelassiterislandcastawa2374

    I'm just about ready to buy one of these as an auxiliary power for my sailboat. My biggest question is can I look at the manual before I buy it? I want to see if it has a swivel nut that you can lock where it will be straight in place. Great video brother!

    • @HufflerGarage
      @HufflerGarage  Před rokem

      I don't believe it does, but you may be able to add one. If you look up an old Tohatsu M9.8B manual, it's identical to the Hangkai manual. Here is a newer Tohatsu one, but everything looks pretty much the same: www.tohatsu.com/int/tech_info/own_man_pdfs/M6-9.8B_OM2018_EX.pdf

  • @jbreefer148

    I love the 12hp but my only concern is the weight of the motor, since I don't have a boat trailer I always deflate my 13' Saturn fold it up, and store it in my garage. Having to take a 77lb motor on and off every time I use the boat will get very tiring so I may just go for the 6hp model with the upgraded prop. My 4 stroke 3,5 hp Hangkai aka 2hp Honda gxv 50 clone gets my boat with a family of 4 up to 5 mph which is ok for cruising (I also don't like the lawnmower engine noise since the thing is air cooled). AKA its loud! But as long as I get above 10mph with the 6hp and the 7.8/7" pitch upgrade prop I'm ok with that.
    Update. As I think about it some more the 12 horsepower would make more sense if I use a crane to lift the motor on and off. I found one that fits on the back of a pickup truck.

    • @HufflerGarage
      @HufflerGarage  Před 2 lety +1

      The 12 only weights about 60 lbs., so it's only 14 lbs. heavier than the 6.0. The only real advantage that I see on the 6.0 over the 12 is the built-in fuel tank and the price. If you have 4 people I think you'd be much happier with the 12. We're going to be going over this in our upcoming comparison video, but the 6.0 is a solid piece so all of the motor vibration from the single cylinder is transferred through the tiller handle to your arm and through the transom to the boat. The 12 and 18 have the 2 cylinder motors isolated from the shaft, so there is very little vibration transferred to the transom or your arm. It makes for a much more enjoyable day on the water.

    Really enjoy your videos my friend. Question? I feel the Hankai as you explained are just tohatsu knockoff as Harbor freight predator engines are honda. Would you honestly dollar for dollar recommend the Hankai as reliability. I run amzoil 2 stroke oil. And in shaft also. Amzoil I feel will give longitivity. Thanks for your response. P.s do you sell or service the Hankai

    • @HufflerGarage
      @HufflerGarage  Před rokem +1

      The predators are close copys of Honda, but the Hangkais are clones of existing Japanese engines (in the case of the Hangkai 12, it is a Tohatsu M9.8B). So far the only real issue we have had with any of our Hangkais was with a small plastic clip on the 6.0. We haven't had the 12 or 18 long enough to say for sure, but given the price you could usually buy 3 Hangkais for the price of 1 Tohatsu.
      We don't sell or service (yet, anyways), we just like to test things out :)
