I grew up in Nairobi in the 90's. We had very little VHS cassette tapes that would be sold on the street in the city from vendors. This was one of the only movie that I was gifted when I was a child and I watched it so much the tape eventually became fuzzy! It's very surreal to see people talk about this movie in 2023

The production values actually looked better than what the clips we saw in the video grading video led me to believe. Everything EXCEPT the Nukie costume, that is.

1:12 Rich just tapped into something very real. The sound, costumes, lighting, etc. There's something about movies like Nukie that is so profoundly depressing. And it's always movies that aren't "trying" to be depressing. Usually they're children's movies.
Its the nostalgic feeling of childhood second-hand embarrassment
i think it's like if one of your friends in grade school invited you over to their house for the first time to watch their favorite movie. you go over and they're living in a shitty neighborhood and their house is collapsing and dirty, their parents don't care about them or cook for them, and all of their toys are ancient second-hand sets from goodwill. you sit down next to him inches from the TV in the middle of a filthy and otherwise empty living room and he puts on nukie. you feign interest as he excitedly watches and says things like "ooh, this is my favorite part" and "watch this, look at this"

I am 99,9% sure that the man who is talking over the repeated Establishing Shot is Donald Arthur - who provided the German voice of Kent Brockman on the Simpsons AND Chef on South Park.
EDIT: Quick dive into imdb told me that there was a Donald Arthur working on the sound for Nukie. So now I am 100% sure.

Summary: takes itself way too seriously (yet again), is largely devoid of actual fun and felt the need to already introduce The Joker into the "universe" (because we can't have one fucking Batman-film without the Joker, anymore).

What a pleasant surprise to hear the voice of actor Donald Arthur in this. He was an american opera singer and actor living in germany. Of course he's beloved over here as voice of Kent Brockman, Isaac Hayes/South Parks Chef, Uncle Deadly, sometimes Peter Ustinov and many more. I once had the pleasure to work with Donald. He had a small part in a german dub I directed. It was delightful to work with one of the voices I grew up with and always loved to hear. Only today I had a chat with an old friend of him. He showed me a song they recorded in the 80s. The repeated Nukie establashing shot made me smile big time. Thanks.
I did not expect to ever hear Kent Brockman's German voice in a RLM video, or in Nukie of all things. IMdb doesn't even list him with a full voice credit, just as part of the sound department.
I am very disappointed that this isn't another 10 minutes of throwing Nukie tapes into a wood chipper!

Honestly, I'm with Ritch on this. The only thing more depressing than the thought that humanity is the sole form of sapient life in the universe is finding just one alternative example and they're all dumpy, useless goblins that inisist on naming themselves after a Limp Bizkit album.
It's be like if the starship Enterprise returned from its intrepid mission to solemnly report that they found a barren, grey void of a universe with the singular exception of one world populated by a billion Rich Evans's.

Many years ago, my good friend Eric had a copy of Nukie. And he made me watch it. And the one thing I remember was how many times they said his damn name.
This came out around the same era as the Mac and me alien friend movies for kids.
VHS markets were really easy for terrible films to get picked up for distribution. This is an excellent example of that.
In fairness, all I remember of the second act of Wall-E is, *_“EEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVEEE!”_*

I must have seen this movie in my formative years because Nukie's dance moves are identical to mine. Perhaps my aversion to helicopters also originates from this movie. So much self knowledge to carry me into 2023, thank you RLM.
