There's been a growing trend in VHS collecting, which has created an entirely new market for professional VHS grading, very similar to what's been happening with video game cartridge grading. As the owner's of 1000s of crappy VHS tapes, we were curious to dig deeper into this trend, as well as examine what makes something valuable and collectible. This all culminated in us taking a deeper look into our collection of Nukie tapes. Everything always leads to Nukie.

Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture.
This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger.
The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.
The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours.
The danger is to the body, and it can kill.
The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

Someone REALLY did it all for the Nukie.

Fun Fact: One of the releases of _Nukie_ actually used _Mac and Me_ art on its box. I am *NOT* even joking. Look it up. It's a French version that goes by the name _"Nukie et Miko."_ That's what they have. It actually is a copy of _Nukie!_ They had so little faith in releasing it, they replaced the art with a different shitty _E.T._ ripoff, hahaha.
@@MaximumMadnessStixon I was confused as to why there were different pressings of Nukie with different cover art. Now I see that there were different pressings for different countries, and am even more confused now.
@@DeflatingAtheism I'm not exactly sure why it'd be confusing. Different companies own distribution rights in different countries, and will sometimes produce their own cover art and whatnot. That's typically how it has always worked. (It's also possible that specific cover art might be copyrighted to certain companies and thus couldn't be reused by everyone else without paying extra.) Additionally, they have to produce versions in other languages, which is why there would be multiple pressings. You're not going to release an English-language tape and case in Germany, for example.
As for the _Nukie et Miko_ case, I'm guessing the same company owned the distribution rights to both _Nukie_ and _Mac and Me_ in that region, realized that the _Mac and Me_ cover art was more appealing... so they recycled the art to deceptively try to make a quick buck.

9 months later, there are plenty of VHS copies of Nukie available on Ebay, the cheapest auction is currently at around $100 and very quickly ramps up to $2k+ asking price. Meanwhile every copy of Back to the Future on VHS caps at about $11 including shipping.
That it equal parts hilarious and super depressing.
You also have to factor in that one of the theories the RLM frauds pointed out was that the Back to the Future VHS tape in particular had specific value; it belonged to Tom Wilson, the guy who played Biff Tannen and all the other guys in the Tannen family tree in the trilogy. Condition helped, but because it was owned by someone who was part of the film also played a role. Meanwhile, people who missed that tangent also missed the point assumed that, suddenly, VHS tapes are now going to be super valuable when; no, it's just that particular VHS copy, and thus are struggling to make any money on sales.
RLM behind the scenes fact: one of the charities was originally going to be providing care to the ailing elderly but Mike was unable to stop uncontrollably laughing when they tried to film that portion so it was scrapped
So as of this point they've exceeded that Back to the Future tape's sale price, meaning they've broken the record for a videotape sale? Bravo for doing that in a way that underlines how wrong all this videotape speculation stuff is. This actually deserves to make the news.
No, they haven't. The betting activity is almost entirely by people who have either bid on no other items or one other item, meaning the bids aren't going to translate into an actual sale at that price.
@@MegaZetabidders are anonymized, you can’t know that. RLM has friends and followers in the film industry. They have the money and a donation is tax write of as far as I know. You can also see that the bidding slowed down, meaning that it’s not just people trolling the price upwards but actually people thinking about how much they want to spend/donate.
Considering the buzz its generating Mega, it's probably going to sell for a price beyond the BTTF tape, people will cope and say its just for charity though so it "doesn't count".

The practically unregulated art market is perfect for moving around hundreds of thousands of dollars. I do think in the case of VHS tapes there are people sitting on stockpiles of mint-condition tapes from the '80s- I'm sure practically everyone who worked at a VHS mastering and production facilities are- and are in conspiracy to artificially inflate their value. This isn't the first time Hertiage Auctions has tried to start a speculation bubble. They notably did this to video games. Heritage funded a company which would grade retro video games. That company (WATA Games) would give seemingly arbitrary ratings, suggesting these old games be worth ridiculous amounts. Heritage Auctions would then work exclusively with WATA, not allowing any video game grading companies to give input. When it came out that Heritage bought its own stock to make headlines (such as the NES Super Mario Bros selling for $10,000 years ago), they were hit with a lawsuit.

Using a dirty scam to donate to charity, RLM you've outdid yourselves again! I love you guys 😌
Fun fact: It has been discovered that a lot of the speculation of the video game cartridges is provably market manipulation by a grading website and an auction house owned by the same people.
That's what I'm thinking. This sounds so much like what Karl Jobst uncovered over the past few years with Wata/Heritage. Back to the Future = Super Mario Bros of VHS tapes.
@shsrpr it's the same company doing it
Yeah, Heritage is seen in this video too. I guess the games grift didn't last too long huh

It’s the same story with so many things in the 2020’s now. As someone who saw speculators and opportunists come in to the sealed video game market, the same type of folks are attempting to run the same playbook with VHS tapes. It's all just a pump and dump -- hype and "inform" people of what is "rare and important" to try and get fresh money into the market. Oh, and big "legit" sales certainly help, and maybe some articles/coverage from mainstream media. However, the ones who "get in early" will usually be the only ones to turn a profit on their investment, and those who come in later will be stuck holding the bag. I don't follow this VHS market, but the sealed video game market bubble has already crashed after a few years of insane prices. I expect the same to happen here.
And shelf collectors inflated the video game market to an extent long before speculators & opportunists. It's almost a 'make your bed you lie in it' type situation.
I'd say the VHS collectors market is different because it practically didn't exist and if it did it was extremely niche, while video game collecting was a well established "hobby", if you can call collecting anything for the sake of collecting a legitimate hobby.
@@UToobin75 I would argue that "shelf collectors" weren't and aren't involved in coordinated pump and dumps -- they are just collecting. Big, big difference. Any market will get a bump in prices with more interest and people buying, but that's not the same as coordinated scheming, pumping, and then dumping to leave someone holding the proverbial bag.
I've been loosely following the VHS market and it isn't crashing down like the sealed videogame market is, at least yet. What's instead happening is people are pairing VHS copies with DVDs, Blu-Rays, and UBDs together. What's interesting is sometimes the DVD or UBDs are the rarest versions out there. A lot of movies have really weird DVD runs that makes for actual rare finds. I personally have a version of The Warriors on DVD with Korean Subtitles, plus other subs too. This is was a small run DVD that I got for Christmas as a teenager, and I have no intentions of ever selling it. I am just use it as an example.
The VHS market is essentially being used as a tool to prop up the actual rarities of DVD and UBDs. A lot of movies will have limited runs of UBDs, especially versions that come with free digital downloads. I have a friend who collects these rare UBDs and has spent a pretty penny on some movies that he watches. Sealed versions are out of his grasp, but he prefers to watch them.
The collectable movie market is insane and it's funny that VHS tapes are the most common types out there, with DVDs and UBDs competing for rarest.
@@PatTheNESpunkexactly. One could argue about the merit of collecting something just to allow it to get dusty on a shelf, but collectors assembling (relatively) small personal collections is a little different to these schemes, which are just people trying to make a buck.

The bids on your Nukie are insane just two hours after you released this video.
Expect at least a half dozen news article about how the least likely movie managed to hit (at least) $50k in auction.
I expect no articles on the auction, as most of the time those articles are also sponsored by the auction houses.
The corporate press has no interest in real news, what world do you live in?! 🤣
This tape will sell for more than my mortgage.
@silly goose
In what world does a Nukie graded video fit into that description lmao
@@mustangmckraken1150 It doesn't, but it does fit into a wood chipper!
Gotta love the one off RLM videos. It really brings out their chaotic side. Full belly laugh when the first tape hit the chipper. Don’t be sad because the Nukie Shelf is gone, smile because it all got obliterated for a great video
I liked Rich's old man walk
There were probably at least a couple tapes already in the post on the way to them before this vid hit... People aren't going to stop... Plus there's the very real possibility that the winner of the auction just sends it straight back.
@@Lamrett Eventually they'll have to start feeding deliveries of Nukies directly into the woodchipper just to keep the flow from overwhelming the studio.
Serious kudos to the camera and lighting work in the “chair interview” sections
For those wondering, it sold for $80,600.
You should send the shredded tapes to the grading company.
This is the best comment yet
Take all the pieces of tape usable and make a super extended cut
@@Mr_Fancypants Yes, the 100+ hour director cut of just... "nuuuuuukiiieeeeee"
Only RLM can point out a scam. And end up selling a copy of a VHS they've made fun of, for more than the scammers did for the $75K Back to the Future is a phenomenal feat, as the bid for Nukie is over $75K already. And going to charity, this is why the RLM guys are truly awesome guys.
80k now O.O
You can't out-fraud the original hackfrauds.
Lol I remember when auto tracking came to VHS machines , felt like the biggest baller in the world when friends would come over and we didn’t have to manual fix the pictures
Yeah, you know there's no real penalty for bidding and then not paying, right? I'll be happy if I'm wrong, but I've got a hunch there's some trolling going on. Until it's actually sold and paid for I wouldn't get too excited about the bidding.
And with free shipping! What a deal!!
I can't believe you guys would so carelessly destroy the cultural contribution of an ET rip-off made under apartheid.
I love that the Nukie video is probably the best thing RLM has done.
And in less than three hours the tape went from $500 to almost $32k.
Over 35k now
US $49,700.00
Now at 60000
80k now
Wait ,What? For real?
This is like a RedLetterMedia version of a Panorama - tackling an issue or talking point. I liked it. They should do more.
Edit: I’d like to add to the record that I noticed AND appreciated Rich Evans combed his hair for his sit down interview.
Agree 100%
here is my best guess on why this video exists. they recorded the nukie botw, didn't get any valuable content and decided to do this video so it wasn't a waste of time and they can stop getting botheredabout watching it.
I love when they do this kind of thing.
Notice that when he combs his hair, he becomes RichARD Evans.
Wonderful video with thoughtful (and honest) discussion, folks. Thank you.
Also: wood chipped VHS tapes are something I never knew I wanted to see but that was unexpectedly beautiful.
Damn that Justing Roiland doodle might be evidence in court now
The most shocking thing about this video is finding out the tape room is on the second floor
It's almost like video game grading and VHS grading are absolutely low-tier scams that have ruined fun hobbies for the small collective of people who actually enjoyed them!
The same thing happened with video games last year, a mint copy of Mario 64 went for obscene amounts even though that game is far from being rare
Did they stop letting you download ROMs or cracks for games? Cause last I checked you can just pirate anything you need.
Pokemon games got it bad
@@user-account-not-found It's not so much about availability of the games in whatever form, it's that these people are parachuting themselves into niche collectibles markets, wrecking them with these pump and dump schemes and walking off with a sack of cash while a bunch of somewhat less punctual grifters are left carrying the bag. These are artifical distortions of once somewhat stable hobbies through external forces.
The collectors still want to collect, and they find themselves priced out of the market by speculators, maybe for years at a time.
People willing to dish out lots of money for old video games to collect them in graded quality has always been a thing, but the recent trend within the past 5 years is absolutely a bullshit scam caused by insiders wanting to make a quick buck. The (what feels like an internet decade ago) exposure of WATA and the ridiculous bullshit coming from that is a premium example of shit people infiltrating and manipulating things for profit.
I don't own any graded games, but I do collect old video games that I have enjoyed over the decades just to have on the shelf because it makes me happy, and I enjoy re-reading physical manuals and having the old cloth maps to look at and what not (I own all of them on GOG as well). While it doesn't directly affect me, I still think it's bullshit (also the artificial inflation of prices of non-graded games for awhile just made collecting a nightmare because of it).
I like how one of the "Nukies" they shred is blatantly a copy of _Mac & Me._ (25:16)
I would have never known how spectacular & beautiful throwing a vhs tape into a wood chipper could appear until I watched this demonstration of nuking the Nukies.
The death cry of "Nukie" as each copy gets annihilated is marvellous.
Rich's intro about creating hype is spot on and that's exactly what the NFT's scam pumps were about.
The N now stands for Nuuuukkkiiieeee!
And the ones that understand the game make loads of money.
@Baron von Limbourgh the ones backed by venture capital
@@TheIslandDivision NFT stands for Nukie Fucking Tape
I have an original unsealed Space Cop DVD. Holding on to that bad boy.
I doubt the justin roiland drawing is worth much anymore
Its still worth something because theres more of a story to it. Itd be like having personal letter from Bill Cosby.
They would later discover that one of the many pulped copies of Nukie was actually the first ever printed, and contained a one-of-a-kind treasure map.
Rest in Peace to Jay's eardrums. He edited the video and needed to make sure all those "Nuuuukie" audio clips were in the correct spots
For a minute I was sure they were about to throw the graded Nukie into the wood chipper.
Me too 😂
This video reveals the REAL reason George Lucas wants to track down and destroy as many copies of the Star Wars holiday special as he can
Because he's got a woodchipper and nothing to chip in it?
Underrated comment
Shredding all those Nukie must of been the most cathartic feeling in the universe
This was put together fantastically. Plz do more videos like this
The insane pile of vhs tape ribbon swirling around by the end of the mayhem is the most surreal thing RLM has done yet. Pure avant garde art.
Reaching heights "Turtle dreams" can only...dream of.
This is borderline experimental
Borderline experimental, one might say.
It was stylistically designed to be that way. But Rich diminished the effect of it.
Borderline experimental
VHS tapes in a wood chipper is something I didn't know I needed.
That was unexpectedly satisfying
Been watching for years and I have to say this may have been one of your most clever well put together videos. Very entertaining keep it up!
Im watching the now emmy-considered "we finally watched nukie: the vhs grading video". We made it yall
I feel like RLM has found its calling in niche, humorous documentaries about things they like. I really hope they continue making videos like this.
What shall we call this new 100 episode series?
@@deathblade111 "My Embarrassing Obsession."
@@deathblade111My 600 Tape Life
I cannot believe how heartwarming that ending was. All those VHS tapes, donated to so many Children's Foundations. Truly a Christmas Miracle.
Those poor kids and animals will love watching Nukie.
The way the wood chipper sprays the actual tape against the wall is very strange but oddly satisfying to watch haha
Holy shit, I think these kind of "random talk and stuff" videos are actually my favorite after BOTW. This channel's educacional value is seriously underrated.
