Homeowners Association changes flag rule: Marine Corps flag stays

- UNION, Ky. (WKRC) - From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Triple Crown, people better be careful if they pick a fight with the United States Marines.
The homeowners association of Triple Crown found that out Thursday night, February 2, after a veteran pushed back on social media when he was told he would be fined if he kept flying his Marine Corps flag. The association for the upscale development in Union, Kentucky backed down Friday, February 3.
The story blew up on Facebook overnight after the vet posted a copy of the letter telling him to pay a fine or take down the flag. Towne Properties manages Triple Crown but did not make the Homeowners Association rules. They told Local 12 News a new manager sent out about three dozen letters to residents who were violating the Homeowners Association's rules, but this one got all the attention.
The flag that Scott Wallace proudly flies outside his Triple Crown home is a Marine Corps flag. Wallace said he was a proud Marine veteran and flies it to support all vets and current troops. He said he was shocked when he got the letter Tuesday, January 31, telling him his marine flag was not permitted, only US flags. Wallace would not talk on camera Friday but several of his neighbors weighed in on the issue.
Eric Hingle was an army vet who didn't know he couldn't fly his Army flag, "Are we going to say there's no school flags or no professional sports flags or anything else? I mean you come out during football season there's Bengals flags all over the place and blow up dollars all over the yards. If we're trying to keep the neighborhood looking good I'd say that stuff shouldn't be out there."
But it is. There are Valentine's Day flags, UK flags, snowmen, even a Miami Dolphins flag. Just two blocks from Wallace's house, Dale Cammack proudly flew a US flag and a Marine Corps flag and had for 13 years. Cammack said he didn't get a letter and was dumbfounded that Wallace did.
"I can't believe in it. In the united states that they would come out with something like that. I just can't comprehend it. Just cannot believe it," said Cammack. "I would completely ignore it. I would fight it to my last breath."
It was that kind of outrage that swamped the Crestview Hills office of Town Properties with calls. Even some threats. Late Friday morning, they issued a statement:
Towne properties wholeheartedly supports all members of the United States Military and thanks them for their service. Town Properties is also obligated to support their association and rules set by the association board. The association manager has spoken with the board and it has been decided that any flag representing the United States is allowed to be flown in the community provided it is in good shape. As such, Mr. Wallace will be allowed to keep his flag displayed outside his home.
Towne Properties said the rules were not theirs, they were the Homeowner's Associations rules. They just manage the property and have to enforce the rules. Bottom line, the rule was changed. The flag was up and no fine will be levied.
Scott Wallace told Local 12 that he was satisfied that he got to keep the flag flying. He did not want to talk on camera because he would like to let the issue cool down.
HOA is really joke of organization. They make the most petty of rules.

I am being sued by an HOA, that I am not even part of, for $5,400 in "back dues".
I keep beating them in court and they keep appealing.
Currently, they are trying to appeal me to the Superior Court of PA because they are not happy with the $30 judgement they received after they pushing to go to a non-jury trial.

I lived in a Condo in Oak Harbor, Washington state and was told that I could not fly my American Flag. This was in 1984 and I was being fined $50.00 per day and after I went to sea with my squadron I was still getting letters. And I even had a court order to appear on a certain day and time or I would be arrested. I was in the Middle of the Indian ocean on board the USS Constillation cv-64 and my division officer and my division chief and myself went to see the Captain of the Constillation about my fine, my having an arrest warrant out for me. At that time I owed several thousand dollars. In the end a congressman stopped all the B.S. and the Base Commanding officer put out a letter stating the Navy would take action against the HOA and fined them hundreds of dollars a day ..in the end I sold my condo and never paid their fine. I used one letter as toilet paper and sent it to the head of the HOA and I never paid.

I have flown the American Flag for 54 years in my front yard! The Senior Center where I live now , as I moved in 11 years ago I ask the man who owned it if I could fly my Flag on a pole and he said that he would help me set it up and the next day he did just that! JIM B.

I'll bet you'll find out the managers and others in HOA's who are against flying the US flag and other service flags are those same ones who protested against the Vietnam war and other veterans. Veterans fly their flags as a sign of respect and comradeship with their fellow vets for the service they gave to protecting the freedoms those who protest.
Just go after the people that are complaining and take them out

Military people have earned the right to fly any flag they want on their property.
Most HOA's are property management companies based out of.... you guessed it, California.
HOA board members are residents of those neighborhoods. The property management may be based in another state but the bylaws are adopted by the residents. Unfortuantely most people don't attend HOA meetings.
OK. So are Avocados, movie stars, and porn. Most credit card companies are headquartered in Delaware. Most fine watches, and excellent chocolate come from Switzerland. The best optics come from either Germany or Japan. What's your actual point?
The point of this news story is that a soldier was caught willingly violating lawful rules and orders, and instead of fixing the system from within, he chose to whine and hide behind his uniform to get special treatment... it has nothing to do with HOA's, and everything to do with fragile egos and entitlement.

I own a home in a subdivision in New Bern, NC and have to pay homeowners association fees each year. I've never understood the concept of having to pay for owni g a home in a certain neighborhood, so that the association can tell me what I can and cannot do on my own property. 🤔🙄🤨😐 Smh.

They need to let the HOA manager know that just because he migrated does mean he can throw around random rules just because he wants to.
Basically Towne Properties almost stepped on a land mine.
Using your analogy, the marine actually tried to frag the HOA after getting called out for being a rule-breaker. I mean, why not throw your platoon under the bus to get special treatment, rather than admitting your mistakes and finding an adult way to move forward.

"Allowed" to fly the USMC banner suggests that it is a privilege and not a right. Also, I note that no apology is offered for the HOA's outrageous conduct.
