Indonesia has grown larger and more powerful since the end of the cold war, quietly becoming the biggest Economy in Southeast Asia and the fourth most populous country in the world. They have a massive military of 400,000 personnel as of 2023, the same year that they approved a 20% increase to their defense spending. Physically connecting the Indian and Pacific Ocean is the nation of Indonesia where 60% of the worlds maritime trade passes through this region. Indonesia is a major part of the 10 member Association of SouthEast Asian Nations or (AH-see-ahn) ASEAN. When combined as a whole, they rank as the fifth-largest economy with a combined population of 662 million people and a GDP of 10 trillion or 6.5% of the global GDP. They’re kind of a big deal. For context NATO has about 900 million people under their security umbrella.
So now it’s becoming more clear why both the United States and China are investing Billions of dollars competing for Indonesia's affection trying to win them over as an ally and a bestie. But We’ll see how Indonesia’s foreign policy of aggressive neutrality might be one of the biggest factors preventing war between the US and China right now. The non aligned policy of a country halfway around the world from you might prevent armageddon. How does Indonesia’s unique history explain this stance? What are the reasons Indonesia is suspicious of any potential U.S or Chinese alliance? And why are they paradoxically speeding up their military’s modernization efforts?

    About the Indonesia proverbs...
"Rice has turned into porridge" means something important has happened and it's irreversible.
"There's prawn hiding behind rock" means there's ulterior motive behind sweet words and gifts
"Tigers die because of their stripes" I actually haven't heard of this one. The closest one I think is "when elephant dies, it leaves tusk, when tiger dies, it leaves stripes", which means when one leaves, retires, or passes away, they would be remembered by their past achievements.

3:57 thank you for using this version of painting of Penangkapan Pangeran Diponegoro or the english title is The Arest of Pangeran Diponegoro (it was painted by Raden Saleh, Indonesian painter) because dutch painter, Nicolaas Pieneman painting of Penyerahan Pangeran Diponegoro or the English title is The Submission of Prince Dipo Negoro to General De Kock, is more famous and widely use. Just little appreciation 🎉
And fun fact, even if these two painting painted the same scene but you can cleary see the perspective from Indonesian people and the dutch from that painting. For example, the title, in Indonesian perspective Pangeran Diponegoro was arrested by the Dtuch, we can see in the painting that Pangeran Diponegoro looks more brave, but in Dutch painting, it's a submissions, the way they paint Pangeran Diponegoro is look like he accept his fate to be submitted by the Dutch. There's still a lot of fun detail you can look for!

That’s a great philosophy. As an Australian, we followed that and mostly lived pretty care free.
We have relied quite a lot on the US for our security and have essentially been kind of obliged to help support military operations, some of which have turned out to be misguided to say the least.
Most Australians are very friendly and respectful (sorry for some of us who are drunk jackasses in Bali).
Generally from individual people up to national level we try to uphold fairness and respect for others. Over the last two decades we have sometimes got involved in things I think we should have stayed out of and apart from the damage of war, It’s also made our friends with everyone idea a little harder. We have had a mostly very beneficial relationship with China. However, they have been trying to dominant us covertly and overtly for a long time. We had to stand up for ourselves and Its cost us, but I think it was worth it. I hope Indonesia can stand shoulder to shoulder as friends who support each other when needed. Vietnam is in a similar situation to Indonesia. We count Vietnam as friends too. Not every country needs to be publicly aligned with China or the US but if we stand up for ourselves when bullied it’s better for all of us. It disappoints me when the US doesn’t always uphold the fairness and justice for all that it claims. We are mostly aligned with them but they are a bully too. If I have to choose the US bully or the CCP, I’ll take the US any day. China is seeking world dominance and I don’t think that will be fun for anyone. Most Australians don’t want to spend hundreds of billions on defence, but China has shown what they think of us “Australia is chewing gum on China’s shoe”. It’s a shame, the Chinese I know are mostly very nice and hard working people. No counties really want to get pulled into conflict with the US and China, but being defenceless it’s a great option either. Best wishes and respect from Australia. 🇮🇩🇦🇺 ✊

Your analysis and research on Indonesia foreign policies and its ties to our history is spot on. This is a very well researched content.
I know this video is about quasi cold war 2.0 between the US and China. But I as an Indonesian personally think u can add more context in our relationship with another key player in worlds geopolitics which is the Middle East region. In which we have a very good relationship and many of our leaders have become some sort of mediator between arab states. Our relations with Middle East region alongside ASEAN and also our neutrality with US and China makes Indonesia a very strategic component in world balance.

The pointed and the bestfriend of the US figure, Soeharto even now is called dictator by the westerner? Serious? Just like what they did to Saddam Hussein who they gave info to invade Iran back in 1980's and in the end Saddam is called a dictator?
The owner didnt tell the US gave Indonesia weapon supply to Soeharto motives were to invade Timor Leste, and in 2000 the US themselves called the invasion is illegal 😂
Back in 1998 south east asia financial crisis, it was your people George Soros who made South East Asian countries economy collapses by buying a huge sum of dollars and now you act like your country had never involved in any of these!
You can call me a whistleblower, I'm not afraid the bully of your government. Bang on my door, come on the neo colonializer! I dare you to. World and my people should know the ugliest fact and truth about the works of your foreign policy.
The owner of the channel said that is it better for the US to use military power to force world peaceful meaning that is it better for the US to use military power to force people across the world outside of Europe to be uneducated so they can still rule over them.
So just use it with your false provocation like your country did to Iraq and you dont have to apologize if two millions of iraqis died for some filth scheming made by your own too although you said your nation are valueing the humanity and freedom very high above other nation right? Of course you can nuke every countries that against neo colonialism and so in the end your people can live in the barrren world just by themselves too. Why you dont dare to do that?
We dont want to be like Afghanistan which said by the western media has received 30 trillion usd aid but left with no modern infrastructure build only a very huge stash of weapons that made them familiar with weaponary and now had embodied in those afghani cultures. They will shot weapon to the air on every wedding and that isnt their ancient original culture 🤮
China with only 4,9 trillions USD have their railroad, street connected all across their country, new modern airports, new modern hub ports. Now you and the owner of the channel use your logical to say how could 30 trillions and 5 trillions usd could change a country very different? Is those 30 trillions usd is stolen?
We want to embrace our economy not ruining our peaceful culture like your country did to Afghanistan.

In my view, Indonesia is a great example of a country that knows how to grow while staying true to its values. Even though most people in Indonesia are Muslim, they respect all religions. They don’t like racism and see it as a threat from outside. In the world, they try to help others without letting anyone take advantage of them. All of this is because of Pancasila, their guiding philosophy.
I really think that this country, with everyone getting along and respecting each other, can show us how to make the world a better place. We should all learn from how Indonesia sticks to Pancasila. It shows us that we can all live together happily and keep getting better.

At 7:08, the photo is irrelevant to the content (PRRI-Permesta rebellion 1957). The photo is president Sukarno with the rising general (soon to be dictatorial president) Suharto in 1966.
You said there were 2 commanders rebelled. Actually it was not only 2 but many regional commanders in Sumatra and Sulawesi rebelled. This was a power struggle between regional army commanders vs central leadership. The regional commanders were indeed anti communist, but the Army leader they were rebelling against (AH Nasution) was also anti communist.
CIA support for the rebels pushed Sukarno closer to PKI.

Indonesia has their own recent, yet growing high tech or high end consumer goods markets that are beginning to break into US/EU Markets. I bought a set of high end speakers drivers and tweeters from an Indonesian company called SB Acoustics a while back. SBA is a branch of Sinar Baja Electric. Their speakers are good. They can compete with some of the best of what the US or EU has to offer and the prices are lower, or were. While it is certainly true that Indonesia relies on China or the US for a lot of trade they also have their own domestic goods and services markets that are growing and not reliant on anyone else. They're spending on education and research. They have a lot of well educated people with big ambitions to do their own thing and they're doing it. I don't think this is going to turn out to be your typical client state type arrangement like it was in the 60's. There's almost nobody that can compete with the US, EU or Japan in high end audio. It says a lot that they were able. Especially on their first attempt as far as I know.

Indonesia's foreign policy is "independent and active".
So, Indonesia never "sticks" to USA.
In a nutshell, Indonesia opens for everyone.
Sadly, we are watching that China is making a massive economic movement in Indonesia, so naturally Indonesia's economily will be more influenced by China, at least for now.
China are having massive expansion in SEA while the biggest US expansion in SEA is... building more military base in Philliphines.
Won't say it is wronf but you see the priority here....
China wants to control the world by creating dependencies while USA wants to control the world by military.
And I just realized that while Indonesia is neutral, surrounding countries are basically with USA.

The video encompasses a good range of nuances that explains our approach in the current geopolitics, but what's missing here is Indonesia is just as suspicious to the US as we do to the Chinese. Soeharto, the longest reigned dictator in Indonesia is, in a sense, a fanboy of the US. It is under his rule that the infamous Freeport is sucking up Papua's mountain dry without enriching the country in return for decades just like what happened in Africa. Many even believed that the US is behind many of the suppression by mass murders starting from 1965, as mentioned in the book "The Jakarta Method". In a sense, it's not too crazy to assume that Soeharto's authoritarian rule was "allowed" by the US for decades since it could suppress soviet influence in the region, along with persecuting Chinese ethnicity at the same time, a complete fun package.
So the concern of foreign intervention runs deep within every fabric of our policy. It is hard to imagine the days when we will align ourselves as allies to any sides of international conflict, we had enough fill of colonialism and neo-colonialism after all.
