Tongkat Ali has been getting a lot of attention over the past year or so, and for good reason. It appears to be one of the more promising supplements that may actually increase testosterone, even in young healthy men. However, there is some recent research that has surfaced over the past year that is worth diving into.

From malaysia here: Took a course on botany back in Uni and was told by researcher there that the non toxic part of the Tongkat Ali plant is the root, which has the characteristic walking cane shape, thus tongkat (walking stick/cane). However, manufacturers sometimes use the entire plant to save on cost, hence the toxicity.

I started taking tongkat Ali and ashwaganda and instantly felt less depressed and sluggish, felt better in the gym, and my body felt bigger and stronger and my workouts felt like they were actually building my body vs just staving off catabolism. The BEST thing I noticed was my energy levels were STABLE! I didn’t necessarily GAIN more energy, but I STOPPED CRASHING, I always feel good and normal. Which if your someone who has gone so long with seemingly low T levels, this is a HUGE benefit

Very comprehensive review of the literature on Eurycoma / Tongkat Ali. I used to do product R&D for a company about 20 years ago, and one of the products I did included both LJ100 Tongkat Ali and a high protodioscin content (>40%) Bulgarian tribulus extract. Protodioscin is useful for increasing luteinizing hormone and, thus, testosterone, but Tongkat Ali was particularly useful for keeping that increased testosterone free / unbound. They seemed to work synergistically.

Tongkat Ali work effectively to boost testosterone and DHEA if it's taken with regular exercises (or ideally weight training + cardio). That is why Tongkat Ali remains as a dietary supplement, and should not be seen as a medicinal drugs. The misconception by most Tongkat Ali users is that they expect testosterone gain just by taking supplements, and assume their peak testosterone levels stay there forever! The reality is, our testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day. And these caveats were not covered in any videos. Don't expect taking Tongkat Ali like putting fuel additives in your car, and expect the car to perform at its peak torque or BHP every time. Most studies on testosterone studies and clinical trials on Tongkat Ali in the last 20 years have sufficient evidence to show it may boost testosterone across men in various age-groups. There are more benefits than just testosterone, but the overall effect of Tongkat Ali is compounded by other hormones as well. The key is to manage the expectations of the end result of taking Tongkat Ali on overall men's health - measured by strength, energy, sexual desire, fertility, mental state and overall well-being.

Very informative, thanks. I have been taking the following: I'm 67, workout with kettlebells 5 days/week (40m each workout) and walk 30m x 3 times/week, try to keep a healthy diet on a 16/8 protocol (@60% plant based) and no alcohol except for an occasional glass of wine or a beer and 7 hours of sleep daily. My present cycle is: Tongkat Ali (Horbaach)1800mg/week + DHEA (various) 100mg/week + Tribulus (various) 1600mg/week. I started Tongkat @2015-16 but didn't have a rigorous workout plan and wasn't as healthy as I feel now. Therefore, I have become my own guinea pig. Results since 2019: increased lean mass and fat loss, higher levels of stamina, pleasant mood, better sleep, and active libido. In other words, I feel like when I was 40 something but leaner and stronger. My cycle goes on a 5/2 basis AND take a full month off everything every semester. I am 31 years old. It certainly increases and likely works through DHEA. I have done multiple bloods after taking. For me, LH doesn't move much, DHEAs surpass the range and total T increases between 20-30%, free testosterone hardly increases. Glad that there is finally good research on this to confirm what I thought. I am also not surprised that your body 'adapts' to Tongkat, it does this with most things as it attempts to maintain homeostasis. I have found that small cycling 5 days on a 2 days off has prevented tongkat from losing its impact and I have been taking it like this for a year now. We need good human research now on Fadogia Agrestis now, the combination of both these plants is very promising for increasing testosterone.

Hi James, since you suspect it works through DHEA, have you checked your estrogen ?
Edit, I have found this about tongkat ali :
Being an endocrine adaptogen, tongkat interacts with a variety of hormones and hormone precursors, such as:
      Testosterone (increases)
      Estrogen (decreases)
      IGF-1 (increases)
      Cortisol (decreases)
      DHEA (increases)
      Pregnenolone (increases)
That means if you take too much of it it could increase your estrogen, and that would explain why some people report cases of gynecomastia

Have you had any subjective/noticeable effects? You mention that your free T doesn't move at all, and free T is, as far as I know, the form of T that is the most responsible for the physical and mental effects of T.
One of the hypotheses as to how tongkat ali works to increase T and produce subjective effects is that it acts to reduce SHBG and thereby indirectly increasing *free* T, but seems like this is not the case as per your bloodwork?

So as a biologist I'm pretty sure it has more to do with our sedentary lifestyle.
We are more relaxed, more chill, have no competition. This lowered it in general. Combined with higher bodyfat and less sun and it's easy to see a drop.
Higher fertility might indeed be due to plastics interupting the endocrine system at a young age. But that's not a 1.1 with test levels.
Example: my testosterone is 450ng/dl at 26 years old. I have alot of chesthair, beardhair, deep voice and better muscle growth than 99% of the people I know.
My fertility is also very high (I actually tested it with a test and watched it myself under a microscope to confirm).
It's not only about test levels. It also has to do with how your hormonal system reacts to it. Some people need very little test to perform, other need alot. My sensitivity to it seems very high.
      And now comes my points.
Plastics don't lower your test, they lower your endocrine sensitivity by blocking pathways etc., sometimes forever. This is also why people get infertile.

I don’t know if this is true, but some people who have taken it say the estrogen suppression can lead to aching joints amongst other things. I'm even able to see veins once again all over. As far as the effects it's made my libido go up especially the first few days of a cycle, energy improved, better recovery and strength gains despite being on a cut. The only side effects have been occasional sensitivity in the nipple, like uncomfortable amounts; this only happens for the first few days and with no visual gyno development i've seen no reason to discontinue it.

Hey, I had a blood test the 19th August done where my testerone was at 339 ng/dL. I have now been using Tongkat Ali for around 3 weeks and I will be getting another blood test the 1st of November. I am for reference 20 years old and relatively active. I will be doing a update when I get the blood result (if I don't forget it)

I’ve tried all of the “natural” test boosters. None of them work.. except Tongkat Ali!!! I experienced effects after just 3 days, boosted libido, semen became much thicker, and I seemed to have a permanent “mild semi”, so was as if I had gained an inch while flaccid. Friends who I recommended it to also noticed pretty dramatic results. Definitely worth a try* although I did take double the recommended dose by accident, but I am 200 lbs, and pretty jacked, so my tolerance to most things is higher than your average person.

Tongkat Ali’s is the single best supplement for our endocrine system. In my 12 months experience with Tongkat Ali, I benefitted most from libido, sperm count and testosterone. Arguably, in order to maintain your testosterone peak levels, you need to take Tongkat Ali with regular exercises, avoid smoking or reduce alcohol consumption. And I agree that for Tongkat Ali to work optimally (and just like any other herbs), you need to cycle 4 weeks ON, and 1 week OFF. There are plenty of clinically tested Tongkat Ali brands with premium extract out there such as AKARALI.

@@ivangerginov5648 Sorry to jump into this conversation, but a person's health status is not a function of the individual sum of parts. Focusing on which variables cause the most impact on health is a flawed approach in science or biology.
In reality, the study of cause-and-effect is non-linear and most scientific methodologies failed to prove the efficacy of ANY drugs when subjected to other variables. For instance, even the best-proven Viagra has 40% efficacy. Or in another example, COVID19 vaccine has 70% efficacy.
That is why herbal supplements or any dietary supplements must be taken together with other lifestyle changes in order to maximize their effect. And this applies to Tongkat Ali, Fadogia or even Ashwagandha.
But as far as I know, Tongkat Ali has proven efficacy when tested on young adults, mid-aged men and older men above 50. And that involves 1,000 tests on humans since 1990s. And it that is not enough sample, it is used in Asia for more than 4,000 years. No wonder Asians live longer up to 102 years.

Worked exceptionally well for anxiety, confidence, energy and mood overall. Stopped taking Tongkat Ali after one month cause it lowered my testosterone and spiked my estradiol and prolactin. Unfortunately, after stopping, all good effects went away. Same happened to my friend. Doesn't make sense but that's how it went for me and my buddy.
