    Avoid running into as many errors as I did when performing a bare metal server installation of EVE-NG 5.0 on Ubuntu 20.04. The steps in this video can also be used to perform a legacy installation of EVE-NG 4.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.
    EVE-NG is one heck of software that you can use to assist you on your certification studies. Whether your pursuing the CCNA or JNCIA, EVE-NG allows you to import a variety of network vendor images to lab up and get familiar with functionality of those devices.

    I setup EVE-NG exactly like this unfortunately my server crashed right in the middle of studying for my CCNP Encor. Now I'm back at square one. Luckily I only had about 10 labs completed so I can re-do them. So, here I am....again.....building on a brand new PC I just built off of PC Part Picker. Excellent tutorial, makes my life a lot easier. Cheers.

      Ah man…sucks to hear you had to start all over. If you didn’t previously, make sure to take backups and export your labs on the new build. Glad to hear you found the video helpful and good luck on your encore studies.

    This might be a dumb question, but can't you just take the eve-ng iso file and make that a bootable usb and install it to a device that way? I got an older laptop and it had issues doing this. The ubuntu installed and ran fine, but the eve install was basically a brick. I was wondering if/why I could/couldn't just install it via usb-iso.

      I personally ran into issues trying to boot my HP BMS from the eve-ng iso, so I created this video to provide folks an alternate method

    Cool video. Curious, as I want to buy a system to run large eve labs. What are the resources required to run a large eve lab as far as cpu, ram, disk etc? I know there are lots of variables, but what would you recommend to avoid any resource issues?

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks, so the biggest things that will make the biggest impact on on the performance of your EVE-NG server are CPU, RAM, and storage. Here's a link to EVE-NG recommended hardware requirements to give you an idea where to start, just search on page 11 of the pdf for (Hardware requirements). www.eve-ng.net/images/EVE-COOK-BOOK-1.9.pdf

    • @matth9939
      @matth9939 Před 6 měsíci

      @@jongreenit thank you. The link was helpful. What are your opinions on what the performance would be like on a mini pc with 64g ram, 14 cores, nvme storage? Seems like based on that link I could run a decent lab. But it’s a mini. Not sure how it would hold up over time. Debating between a mini (I need a new pc) or a used server with 14 cores, nvme, and 128 or 256gb ram. They are the same price point. But, it’s used.

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 6 měsíci

      @@matth9939 No problem, 64 gb of ram and 14 cores are great specs if intending to run EVE-NG on your PC build. Thankfully with EVE-NG you can always see what the resource consumption looks like when spinning up nodes in the lab canvas, by selecting the "nodes" or "status" tab you'll be able to gauge about how many devices could run in your environment. For best performance I recommend any other resource intensive applications while labbing.

      @jongreenit  Před 10 měsíci +2

      As long as the server/machine meets the requirements outlined on their website. Any budget server/pc off ebay should be good: www.eve-ng.net/index.php/documentation/installation/system-requirement/

    Mr John, question for you, on EVE's website they specifically say not to update to ubuntu 22.04, in this video you do an apt-update/upgrade. Will these commands update ubuntu from 20.04 to 22.04 ??

    • @joshbest9294
      @joshbest9294 Před 3 měsíci

      NVM, it seems you have to do a completely different command to upgrade to the 22.04 version, all good.

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 3 měsíci

      @joshbest9294 yep upgrading the os from 20.04 to 22.04 is a different command. The command used in this video just updates the applications on the current version.

    Well crap... I just got my EVE-Pro instance set up on ESXi... Now I'm buying another server, moving all my other servers off of it and throwing eve onto the 96 core server I have... Wish I had started off like that. The CPU cap that ESXi Imposes though is annoying.

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 11 měsíci

      Yeah if you’re only using a lightweight amount of resources the free version of ESXI is cool but if you need a beefy VM the CPU cap is very irritating

    Can the same steps be done on community edition?
    Also is it a good idea to allow eveng box to connect over internet? Cause i saw it opens the portal on http

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey yes check the video description to skip to the part which identifies which script to use for the community edition. It’s the one doesn’t say “pro or agent”.

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 4 měsíci

      I wouldn’t assign EVE-NG a publicly accessible IP reachable on the internet. The type of address used in the tutorial uses a private network address on my local network.

    why apt-y dist-upgrade would it upgrade the ubunty to 23.10 ?

    • @jongreenit
      @jongreenit  Před 4 měsíci +1

      So "apt dist-upgrade" is only responsible for upgrading the installed packages on the system not the OS as a whole

      negative, EVE-NG 5.0 is based on Ubuntu 20.04 installing it on 22.04 will result in a failure since 22.04 has different dependencies for certain programs.
