  • Because I had to shut down my GNS3 server for while, I started using EVE-NG on Google Cloud Platform and I am very happy with the experience.

@Scott Harrison Community edition is free, and can be installed on a Type 2 Hypervisor (VirtualBox VMware Workstation), Type 1 Hypervisors (vSphere ESXi, KVM, and I'm not sure about Hyper-V) or bare metal installation. If you want the Pro version then it costs.

My Cisco instructor introduce me to EVE, I use to have my own lab setup (three switch, three router) but it was limited. I decide to go with my own server( Dell R620, four 1TB SSD, 128GB RAM, two 10 core intel Xeon CPU) I plan to use it to do DevOps and a couple VM’s. But most importantly at the moment I want to use it to practice for my CCIE using EVE. I use normally log into my instructor server but when multiple students are on it some times locks up. The big issue for me was if I am doing lab in EVE and another student does the same lab and reset the lab it erase the current configs I have on the devices. It mostly happen at nights when most of the students are logged in doing labs. He is kind enough to give all his students access to it so I stop complaining. The sever should arrive in a couple days and I can’t wait to set it up with Keats just say a lot or applications that will help me not just in networking but also in other IT related areas

he tested games but what it matters is the motherboard and the cpu, you can use this old decommisioned chips to make a lab environment for less than 200, although components could fail (of course, it's China XD) but I haven't had any issues with mine, and if you have money and time, it could be worth
In terms of cpu I recommend haswell based en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_processors_(Haswell-based)
      or braadwell based en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_processors_(Broadwell-based)
either version 3 or 4 (4 higher performance and next gen against the haswell
from those I recommend the version that end up with a 0 like the e5-2670, 2680, 2690, others that end up with another number are either experimental or a specific OEM for a customer.
In aliexpress they sell a package, meaning motherboard, cpu and ram, it's the best way to buy them

You are better of taking an account with Cisco CML2 then you will get all the images for only $199,- , okay it is a lot of money but you will have the state of the art new images and you can hold them up-to-date for one year.

Install it and it creates a folder with path as following: c:\Program Files\EVE-NG. There is a file with name "win10_64bit_sCRT.reg" so run it and it will create news keys and values to the registry. All set now.
Run EVE-NG with a router and click on it. It should ask you if you wanna run SecureCRT. Click on remember the option. If you use Firefox "Console to All Nodes" works well. Firefox generally works better in EVE-NG UI as Chrome limited me.

1)Take note of SecureCRT's config location in Global Options / General / Configuration Paths category
      2)Close SecureCRT
3)Edit the Global.ini file in the config folder so that the line with...
      D:"Check Shell Telnet Command"=00000000
      ... is modified to...
      D:"Check Shell Telnet Command"=00000001
When you next launch SecureCRT you should be prompted to make SecureCRT the default telnet application.

But its not needed as far as you can connect them via console or remote method. Because in real life network engineers barely see the actual device. Most of the times DC engineers do the physical part and NW engineer is the one who do the configure stuff and tell DC engineer to what to do.

gns3 is a little more demanding than EVE-NG in term of processor's virtual capacities, I guess.

You have to go to the init.php file with Nano and edit line 71 by removing platform at the end of the line. Overwrite, then exit. Now try the same command again.
