I think her character is stuck in her early 20s due to grief and trauma. She's unable to "grow up", dresses younger than her age, works at a low-stress, low-opportunity job, living with her parents... and acts out the horrors of the past in order to change the outcome. TBH, I don't think this film could have ended any other way... she's broken beyond hope (especially after finding out that the man she loves was part of the horrors of the past). Tragic in the most Shakespearean of terms. Thank you for this wonderful review-- I LOVED this movie!

I liked the part where the lawyer breaks down and asks for forgiveness. I thought it was a necessary angle to see that Cassie was capable of forgiveness when she’s met with genuine remorse. It does seem a little unlikely that someone who spends their whole career trying to get charges dropped would have their moral compass in tact enough to recognize what they’ve done wrong, but I thought it made a great plot point to contrast from all of the “good guys”

Completely agree that it was needed to show forgiveness. As an attorney, I was disappointed in the way they portrayed the attorney in the film because it played into the crappy (and in my opinion incorrect) way that movies and TV often portray lawyers. But I understand why they did it for the story line.

@@alexandrakritzman938 I get what you mean. I was reading the script online, and in that scene it was highlighted that Cassie forgiving the lawyer is extremely difficult for her.
Like you said, it was probably for story reasons. The fact that the lawyer, who arguably treated Nina the worst out of the three, was the only one to remember her and feel genuine remorse is probably more interesting story wise.

I think the reason why the murder scene was so disturbing was because of how realistic it felt. I'm a huge gory horror movies fan and this scene made me feel so many things I haven't felt in a while. From the time it takes to do the deed to Cassie crying and raging underneath the pillow to Alex carrying this out out of pure preservation instincts as he himself is distraught by his own ordeal and wants her to stop pleading. Ugh. It was gut-wrenching. Takes you back to remind you that Cassie, even with all her conviction and drive, is no super woman and Al, monstrous as he is, is no serial killer who enjoys killing, and is hella awkward at it. It just felt too real.

Emerald Fennel stated in an interview once that her father in law was a detective/cop and told her that it takes about 2 1/2 minutes to smother someone. Fennel made sure that the scene was that long to ensure the audience understood the gravity of the situation. The camera pulls in, forcing us to watch this happen. It’s supposed to make us uncomfortable, and it succeeds in that. While the scene is obviously disturbing and we all wanted a different ending for Cassie, I think Fennel’s writing and directing choices were brilliant and really doubled down on the overall message of the story.

I asked myself the same question..."even if Nina was Cassie's best friend/like a sister, the level of commitment and trauma Cassie would have to drop her entire life for a decade and just focus on getting her revenge on shitty men...it was quite unbelievable". But then a couple times in the movie, mostly when Cassie was talking to Nina's mom, it was said that Cassie blames herself for not being there that night to protect Nina. This made it a lot clearer to me because if Cassie was supposed to be with Nina that night but flaked out on her or maybe was drunk and went off to do her own thing, it makes a lot more sense why Cassie's life was upended so severely...the guilt she felt for not being there when Nina asked her to come with her or whatever paired with her subsequent suicide (implied) as a result...Cassie felt responsible for Nina's assault and death as a result.

It was believable, and i disagree, a bit. Ppl get PTSD, for example, resulting from the suicide of a loved one, or even just an acquaintance (and I mean, not seeing anything, just the fact it happened). And in this case, Cassie knew what had happened to her dearest, closest, one-of-a-kind bff, one she had an incredibly close bond with, and even if she DIDN'T blame herself for not being there enough (I don't think so tbh), it also struck me that based on their friendship, she felt what happened to Nina like she went thru it herself (my interpretation). She knew the emotional pain like it happened to herself. Plus, seeing all the indifference around you and how perpetrators are being protected is also potentially very traumatizing! It's why survivors often don't speak up. Or why do many ppl downplay what has happened to them; why risk being not believed and dismissed?? It's rape culture on every damned corner, and I don't know a single woman or femme who hasn't had experiences with just that.. (and yeees, also men get abused, but this is say is ALSO related to rape culture. In which sex and gender and stereotyping is equated and used for power abuses.) hell, I know plenty of women who have dropped out of *STH* cos of shit like this. Myself included. And it was not self-sabotage, it was self-preservation. It was being able to continue with life and not wasting your time in places where you're invisible, betrayed, and/or uncared for. And ofc it's not always rap3, but there's SO MANY nuances to it all... Anyway, I loved that film on so many levels and also how ppl are talking about it.

I’ve been watching reviews and reading comments. It seems like some men feel like this is a feminist male hating movie. I had much more in-depth perspectives and would like some feedback. I feel like this movie is very much a Rorschach test. Perhaps men who hate this movie, maybe recognize themselves or people they know in the male characters? That being said, maybe my interpretation says more about me than the movie. But here we go .... SPOILERS BELOW ....
I didn’t get the vibe that this is a man hating movie. One of Cassie’s closest relationships is with her father who is portrayed as a genuinely nice man. He’s a gentleman. He’s kind, loving, and supportive. I feel that because of her father, Cassie knows that there are good men out there. But those good men, aren’t the focus of her vengeance. She’s focused on the people (both men & women) who allow date rape to continue by not wanting to get involved. The people who ignore a situation like this rather than intervening and stopping it, or reporting it and backing up the victim if he/she chooses to press charges.
I felt that in Ryan she thought she’d actually found a nice man. Someone she felt comfortable introducing to her father. To me, this implied that she felt that Ryan was was on the same level (as respectful and as kind a man) as her father. At this point in the film, Cassie has finely started the long process of healing her heart and soul with Ryan’s help.
Then when Cassie sees the video and realizes that Ryan was there, and didn’t intervene nor did he report it, her heart is just completely pulverized. I feel at this point she’s done. She is at her lowest point. From her perspective, her family are disappointed in her again for the fact that things didn’t work out with Ryan. She’s now crushed and more depressed than she’s ever been, but at the same time - she’s empowered by the video. The video provides her with the tool she needs to continue on - while her mind is fueled only by sadness, disappointment, hopelessness, rage, and revenge.
I feel like she very likely knew and was prepared to sacrifice herself in order to ruin the rapist’s life, as well as everyone associated with that night - who didn’t come forward and support Nina.
I wondered while watching the movie if she knew one of the handcuffs was faulty. If she was consciously prepared to suicide by, “nice guy.”
Now - This is where I am curious about the meaning of the different colored pens she used in her journal - red and blue. We only saw her in situations where she used a blue pen in her journal. Was the red pen meant to indicate situations in which she actually physically hurt the men she went home with? We only saw her hurting people with psychological attacks, but it was never made clear if she had ever hurt someone physically, for example when she was with the guy with the fedora she referenced, “a woman who uses scissors,” on men who take advantage of what they perceive as drunk women in bars. Was she bluffing, telling the truth, or was Cassie the woman with the scissors, whom she references?
Now back to the bachelor party - before she takes out the scalpel she was careful to wear gloves the entire time she was in the cabin. Once it became clear that Al wasn’t going to redeem himself, she makes the decision to die for her cause. She actually REMOVES her gloves before picking up the scalpel. She’s no longer concerned about finger prints because she’s not getting out of this alive. When she sits on Al with a scalpel and seemingly prepares to start carving Nina’s name into him, I didn’t feel like she was really going to do it. As with all her other victims, she thoroughly convinced Al that she was about to do him grievous harm. To the point that he freaked out and was able to break the (intentionally?) faulty handcuff and attack her. It seems like she was prepared and wore gloves, in the event that things went differently (as they did with the lawyer), but once it was clear Al wouldn’t likely redeem himself, she set up a situation where he could and likely would hurt her or kill her. By removing the gloves she also knew she’d be able to scratch him and ensure his DNA was under her fingernails. That way, it would be easier to identify him as her killer. (She obviously had no way of knowing they’d burn her body.)
In her mental state, it seems that she was ready to die for her cause. By putting her necklace in the cash register for her friend, Cassie showed that she knew she likely wouldn’t be back. By sacrificing her life, she knew the rest of her plan would play out (via timed messages and the video being sent to the lawyer), and thoroughly destroy every one who had hurt Nina both directly and indirectly by not coming forward or taking the allegations seriously.
So that was my take on this amazing movie. Anyone else have any thoughts?
Specifically, what are your thoughts regarding the red and blue marks & names in her journal & the timing and reason for removing her gloves before she was supposedly about to cut into someone with a scalpel?

    • @brynnabrockbank6946
      @brynnabrockbank6946 Před 3 lety +5

I love your assessment and I agree.
With the red and blue pens, I wondered if it was situations where she got hurt-then tied to your thoughts, she actually had to use self defense against them? Thoughts? But I thought she got hurt and wasn’t able to leave as easily. Because I can’t imagine all of them being that smooth.
The gloves, honestly I didn’t even think about that! Good catch! And I agree that I think in case it all went badly, she wanted evidence. And she was willing to die. It was for the cause but I also wonder if it was her giving up on her future. Pretty sure she would never be able to trust another guy again. Never being able to move past it so there is no financial future. She didn’t have anything left (in her eyes) that would make her want to stay. And with AL’s admittance, she no longer wanted to be in that world but she could still make a difference.
I loved the movie. It was tough to watch. (Not been raped, but have been in situations where it turned unsafe or just being a woman outside) ALLLL THE LINES USED BY THE MEN! Oh my heavens! Like, “It’s ok. You’re safe.” At the beginning of the movie made me want to vomit. I have definitely had, “Why do you have to ruin all the fun!?” Yelled at me for not wanting to go along with the guy-and I was sober. Etc etc. they had it all.

    • @wahoo4uva
      @wahoo4uva Před 3 lety +1

Your questions have got to be rhetorical. It’s obvious that Ryan was doing whatever it took to protect himself. That was his only priority. He didn’t care about anything else but saving his own ass and reputation.
He STILL didn’t see his role in the rape. Notice how when Cassie confronted him, his mask slipped and he called her a failure? Just like when he saw her in the coffee shop and asked her (with disgust, disdain, pity, or all three) why she worked there? He’s the same coward he was in med school. He didn’t stop the rape, he watched and laughed. He couldn’t ask out Cassie in med school because she was so good and brilliant that he couldn’t handle it, although he liked her.
Now that she’s no longer intimidating to him (she works in a coffee shop, in his mind she’s no longer the bright med student he knew) he now feels comfortable approaching her and expressing his romantic interest in her. She’s less threatening because she isn’t outshining him anymore, academically or professionally. Oh, and remember how they “coincidentally” end up in front of his apartment building at the end of the walk he takes her on after their date? 🙄 And he’s friendly enough with rapist Al that he still went to his wedding! AND he let the cop think Cassie was crazy rather than speak up and tell the truth because if he did, he’d (potentially) go to jail and lose everything.
Come on, now. The answers to your questions are all right there in the film on the screen. The film does a good job of making it seem like Ryan matured and gained more confidence as time passed while also giving us clues the whole time that he hasn’t changed at all. Ryan is a POS just like the rest of the assholes and “nice guys” in the film. He’s the same guy he was in med school the night he did nothing but watch and laugh while Nina was raped.

I have been victim of many of the attitudes shown in the characters and I do not think ‘all men are trash’ or anything like that. For me the message was more about the fact that sometimes people who seem like “nice guys” or even people who love you are caught up in a mentality that is so integrated in the way we see te world that we don’t realize how harmful it can be. Even as women we sometimes have certain attitudes or comments that can affect another woman’s life as shown in the movie

After Me Too, instead of men being horrified about the amount of women that have experienced abuse, and using the movement as a harrowing motivation to look at themselves, their friends and family, and the patriarchy in general, SO MANY MEN’S response was: not all men. I don’t think it was just that she heard AL’s name as such, but more so the fact that she heard that he was living a ‘great’ life, successful career, life abroad and now returned home to marry his bikini model GF. In her opinion he stole that life from Nina and to some extent her. It was one thing that he got away with it at the time, but to hear he was now “Living the Dream” when her friend had paid such a high price for his crime was the impotence that spurred her revenge, the fact that she ultimately paid an equivalent price to get that was actually, I think, beautiful mirroring of themes and narrative. I think her character would have behaved differently if she had heard that he was a wasted life, or some how it seemed he was living with the burden of his actions... I think this was demonstrated with the lawyer, his contrition and remorse was enough for her. She wasn’t deranged to the extent that she was unmovable in the face of his admission of guilt and regret, teamed with the fact that he remembered her friend and it haunted him. She accepted that he had paid his dues and obviously believed in his redemption enough to trust him to avenge her if/when she died.
Her countless situations where she “scared men straight” I think were to her a penance she felt she should or could pay for how she believed she failed her friend by not being there and subsequently not being able to right that wrong enough after to save her from what we have to assume was Suicide.

I just saw the movie. Certainly not the best I've ever seen (some elements were a bit too contrived for me), but it kept my interest. I'm on the other side of the ending divide. I liked the ending because: #1, I didn't expect it (sometimes I don't even care what happens in a movie as long as I can't accurately guess it). #2, I thought her behavior was right on track with the patterns of a fragile person, who seemed capable of diving into a sharp or erratic spiral at any time.
The scene in which she had just viewed the video and escaped outdoors reminded me of the end of the 1976 movie Sybil, when Sybil was with the doctor outdoors reconnecting with the whole of herself (but in this case, the character connecting with the grandness of this issue alone). I was led to a letting to, a release, possibly hopelessness for her, with a burning drive for something I couldn't put my finger on. In the bedroom scene, both Cassie and the guy (forgot name) take turns in a crucifix position in the bed, while the scene cuts back to the cross on her uniform. I think the sacrificial element is interesting in relation to such a heavy topic and helps to better explain her choice.
I felt inappropriate laughing at times, but I think the comedic elements helped to emphasize the absurdity of a situation that we allow to continue, while providing distance from a painful topic. It also brought me to a point of wondering if my laughter was triggered by the same type of insensitivity portrayed by most of the characters.

Maybe it's because no one wanted to punish the boys for it, they are making it like a very trivial thing. It's like if a soldier rapes a woman during combat and there is very little evidence: they chock it off to fog of war. And so in order for them not to see her revenge coming, she moves on but all the while biding her time and looking for some way to strike back. Before the existence of the video of Ninna's rape she was helpless and so the perpetrators and any one involved with the events of that day: totally brushed it off and assumes she moved on and forgot. That's when the sneak attack comes.

  • @jc6086

One issue I had with this movie was the believability of Cassie’s weekend pretend-drunken escapades. I simply had too many questions. Like did she ever encounter a man who became violent? It seems like for what she’s doing, she’d have more violent encounters. If so, howd she get out of that? I know she’s not supposed to be superwoman, but at the same time in order to achieve what she did for such a long time she would have HAD to have some sort of combat training through the years or a gun maybe? A knife? Idk. I’d like to see how those events unfolded more, especially since that’s the whole premise of the movie. I know that’s not the POINT of the movie, but i feel like it was set up in a way that leaned into the John-Wick revenge story while still attempting to subvert it and at the same time it ended up raising more questions than answering them. I had a few other questions but I think this was my biggest one. I just wasn’t buying that she just went around acting like a boogie woman without any serious repercussions. I also wasn’t buying the fact that she didn’t think to tie Al’s legs down in the end scene, but I get it...she’s not an assassin or anything. It just didn’t seem like a mistake Cassie would make, especially considering she’s so smart throughout the rest of the film.

The boy who became my boyfriend a few years later was huge for his age, hockey, the star football player gets in the room, starts to fight them, tries to stop it... Got severely beaten... Cries, had to crawl away and hide, afraid for his life. I know he had life long trauma, unable to be sexual, very disturbed non-violent but like chronic anxiety and barely did anything normally. Barely talked normally... Kept getting falsely accused of crimes just because he read as weird. He eventually became very cruel to me for no reason, we broke up... He gets a huge football scholarship to the best university, gets halfway there and crashes. I think on purpose... Males are hurt by rape too. Males are not heartless.

Not once? So there isn't a shred of humanity in this world our protagonist inhabits? Except of course for the cartoonish lawyer...literally just waiting for her to show up so he can instantly fall to his knees (the usually delightful actor Alfred Molina absolutely wasted)...and she of course is so incredibly noble and good that she can actually stop her car in the middle of the road (incredibly unsafe much?) but it's ok I guess cuz she's thinking really deep feminist thoughts or something? And when a dude stops to point out that maybe this is a bad idea...he is of course the bad guy...calling her horrible names...cuz well...just cuz...and of course we had the all-that-was-wrong-with-me-too moment of literally mocking the concept of innocent-until-proven-guilty...probably the only theme in this movie that isn't dispiriting...and I'm no movie-expert Nick but about 5 minutes after the love-interest showed up I knew there was going to be a video and he was going to be one of the baddies...really the only thing I didn't see coming was that batsh*t ending that was too contrived and over-the-top for even this travesty...sorry to go off on a rant...but as a female that was a black-out drunk from age fifteen to twenty-one (and still battle it) I really needed more from this...I sure as hell did...this was the easy-out-live-in-the-echo-chamber-why-feminism-is-the-exception total POS that nobody really needed...

And I have to say I'm seriously thinking about changing my mind and not watching this movie. Which is unfortunate. But I simply can't see how that ending wouldn't ruin the movie for me. I mean great...the guy gets arrested at his wedding in the end......whoopty do. The main character is still dead at the hands of the main antagonist. How depressing is that. It's bad enough that apparently her relationship with Bo's character goes sour, just because Im a huge fan of Bo Burnham and he seems like a really cool character in this movie. But I could deal with that. The main character being killed in horrific fashion by the bad guy right before he's about to receive his just punishment.....not so much.

I mean the movie already seems set in an alternate reality with the pastel colors, the pop soundtrack, and the general vibe. She does look 45 just being honest in the face especially.

I think this movie was awful...like the message was so strong and had great potential to be an amazing movie, but the execution was just totally botched. The movie felt all over the place and was teetering in between realistic and unrealistic. I’m just really disappointed, this could have been an amazing movie. Honestly felt disrespectful to even make this movie this way

I saw it and I was a little disappointed. Based on the trailer I thought the protagonist was an assassin.

I really didn’t like bo burnham in the movie, they definitely should’ve used a different actor

Im totally okay that she died in the bachelor party. The guys there were horrible of course but she was trying to hurt, even torture, the guy so he really just act in self defense. I would do that too, no question. She cant run around and revenge, she is the same level of bad person like all the guys she want to hurts.
The guys should call police after all of course.

@@GERMANYkev I do otherwise the handcuffs would've been more secure. She literally throws something into the woods for evidence when she gets to the bachelor party before making the walk. She counted on him killing her she wanted to be with Nina and she knew the only way Al would pay for what he did would be through her death
