technically this was Daenerys's fault. Cersei was a manipulative abusive asshole, sure, but she didn't burn the city down. Daenerys didn't have to burn it down. They surrendered. They rang the bells. She heard them and still chose to kill thousands of innocents.
Cersei did a lot of people a whole lot of wrong.
She killed Missandei in front of Daenerys, sure.
She (and Joffrey, mainly Joffrey) also had Ned killed in front of Arya and Sansa and Arya personally only wanted to kill those involved, she was helping the rest in the city even though she came to kill Cersei.
So Daenerys did this, not Cersei.

@@user-by7tx2ei2y Bad writing or not, that doesn't justify her being a total hypocrite and burning down a city of innocents when they'd already surrendered. I mean yeah, Cersei is no better that's for sure but Daenerys does the same things that Cersei does and she's even worse. Daenerys puts herself on top of the wheel and her propaganda is that she won't be like everyone else. Here are a few examples: "Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell -they're all just spokes on a wheel. This one's on top, then that one's on top and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground. I'm not going to stop the wheel, I'm going to break the wheel". "Our fathers were evil men. All of us here. They left the world worse than they found it. We're not going to do that. We're going to leave the world better than we found it"🙄
Here she says that she'll stop doing what others did for years and that she won't be repeating the same mistakes and that she'll make the world a better place. This is also the true meaning of what Jon told her "Bulid a world that's different from the shit one they've always known. But if you use them to melt castles and burn cities, you're not different. You're just more of the same". Jon is telling her to be better and be different as she herself said that she will be different but everything that comes out of her mouth is a lie. "I'm going to break the wheel" itself is a BIG FAT LIE cuz her ancestor Aegon the Conqueror built the wheel and since Daenerys wants to take back the Iron Throne for House Targaryen, that means that she thinks the wheel should be restored to its original state (a Targaryen on top of it) not destroyed. "We're going to leave the world better than we found it" Yeah don't make promises you can't keep🥱Daenerys only said that because she THINKS she's nothing like her father but she's wrong. The Mad King murdered a father and his son and believed it was right and Daenerys burned a father and his son alive and also believed it was right. This is a case of history repeating itself which makes it so much worse and to top it off, David Benioff said that the only difference between Daenerys and her father is that she's doing it consciously. I mean yeah, I do consider her crazy father a shitty person for everything he's done but she's even worse for doing the same things with a clear mind.

The only think Cersei cares is herself.
Her jealousy towards younger women to take the throne because of the properchy from her childhood still drive her until adulthood.
Also, Cersei mostly rely on daddy Tywin and ever since her daddy died, she has no idea what to do anymore as no one takes her seriously. She didn't even know parenting as she lets Joffrey whatever he wants or even cares to her other 2 children. Not even wrote a letter of how Myrcella was doing on Dorne and Myrcella was way happy on Dorne or even looked on Tommen. She mostly focused on controlling Joffrey as ruler not as mother.
Now, all of her children died and her daddy dies, she becomes paranoid. She underestimated Daenerys who lost one of her 3 dragons only later killed her other dragon and then killed her best friend / advisor in front of her only for her to go rampage towards King's Landing and kill everyone. No matter how many dragons that Daeneyrs have, it's a big no no to challenge someone with a freaking dragon!
Also, history repeat itself. The downfall happened when the King is still grieving of his first wife died and then he married his Hands' daughter who is so relying on their Daddy very much, has 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl) then the firstborn forced to be his heir in younger age and then he got manipulated by everyone around him. So for Dany wasn't enough the surrender of the city. They took someone too important to her. Tyron proved to not be completely loyal to her in the west, Jon was claimed king in the North despite her help against the White walkers. Missandei has one of the few persons that came with her along her journey and loved her like a sister. Cersei was really stupid, her father was right, she is not smart as she thinks she is. She found nothing but contempt, pain and suffering in Westeros. Remember that Dany is just a girl, she's not a God, she's just a person. The last Targaryen, alone in the world, betrayed and wronged by everyone around her. Two dragons dead, Jorah dead, Missandei dead, while Tyrion betrays her by cutting Jamie loose and to top it all off, lover boy Jon Snow is actually Aegon Targaryen, rightful heir to the throne and beloved by nearly everyone in the land. She snapped, I thought it made all the sense in the world. She was pushed and pushed hard to this breaking point. And it's not like the folks in King's Landing were beloved innocent citizens -- that city was full of crime and grit and people hurting each other. Yes, I wish the show had taken its time a bit more to showcase her dark twist -- I think most fans were just too attached to Dany the hero and after 10 years of watching her crush the villains, watching her go mad was too bitter a pill to swallow. Turning heroes into the villain is extremely difficult, and unfortunately the writers rushed it -- they should've taken a full 10 episodes to really flesh these character choices out. THAT SAID, I think "House of the Dragon" is doing a great job showcasing just how rich and prosperous and powerful the Targaryen dynasty was, what Daenarys truly lost, and the harsh nature within her -- and kinda helps me understand her wildly violent grab for the throne at the end game. The whole "Fire & Blood"/at all costs tone is very clear.

The people who lived there were degenerates who laughed and cheered as Ned was beheaded by a mad child king. They had the ability to unseat the Lannisters and they never did. Also the realm had got used to no dragons after decades so she needed to burn a city to bring the rest into line.
Aegon did the same when he conquered Westeros 300 years before.
Also her dream of ruling with Jon was over and she knew people would want him as King when they learnt of his lineage. She knew she wasn't going to get what she wanted, so went full tyrant.

Despite my thoughts on season 8, i do like to note the irony: The Starks and the Northerners were labelled as traitors ever since Ned's "confession" and the war with Robb Stark, they were labelled as savages, "north men feasted on the corpes of the fallen" when Lancel reported this at court. For the people of kingslanding, this made them fear the northerners as evil men. Also, when cersei is queen and telling the lords that unsullies and dothraki heathens are coming to raid your cities and take your women and lands, really painted Dany and her army as evil savages coming to burn and destroy westeros. We know Dany and her side are supposed to be the good guys, but in the eyes of the common people, they were the invaders coming to destroy everything. And this scene pretty much confirmed their fears, that the northerners, Dany and her unsullied and Dothraki are going to destroy everything, proving Cersei as right.

What Danny did was a perfect example to shut down the would be mutiny in the future. Remember her sit of power was questioned by Sansa stark after knowing that John snow was also a targaryan. Sansa would've used this advantage knowing it'll make other westeros lords rally against Daenerys, danny also realize John snow don't have any balls against her sister. By burning kings landing, the capital which her ancestors built, she set a perfect example of what would happen if ever you try to usurp her throne regardless of your status and importance. As Olena Tyrell said, you can never rule with love and respect, people will take advantage of you, you wanna stay in power? People must learn to fear you.
To massacre a city who in the first place refused to surrender is by far the easiest way to attain peace. Kill thousands to save millions. Check our history, Genghis Khan of the Mongol Empire, Feudal Lord's of Japan during the sengoku era, Greeks, Roman empire, Ottoman Empire, the Dynasties of China etc. All of these civilizations have a history of massacring their enemy. Why call Danny mad? Angry yes, but never mad. She's a fucking brilliant conqueror

I think the comparisons to the mad king aren’t entirely correct.
Emilia does a fantastic job at portraying the moment when Dany realises that the surrender of Kings Landing isn’t enough. She’s not mad in this scene, she’s just been pushed past the limit of her mercy, and she has finally accepted her true nature and that the nature of others cannot be changed.
She’d lost far too much at this point to ever come back from it, and I guess she sees the same for Kings Landing which is why she chooses to destroy it to start again.
That’s my interpretation of it anyway. All I do know for fact is that they did my girl dirty with the ending she got.
I understand why it was Jon Snow and the foreshadowing and blah blah blah, but it still pissed me off.

I loved her performance here as well and was shocked (and even more impressed) to learn Emilia HATED this turn of events, going as far as to ask her friends and colleagues whether she, the actor, was somehow a bad person who deserved to have her defining role take such a dark turn. Have to admit, I’m not a devoted GoT fan, though, so from a casual viewer’s perspective, Dany’s rage made sense.

It’s like the tale of the Black Swan in a sense - her turn is justified, we just needed more time with it, but her destiny from the storyline seemed to always actually set her up on a path toward eventual vengeance/destruction in her ruling.

Aegon I- my city! What have you done?
Aenys- oh my! Too violent for me!
Maegor- Atta girl! You would’ve been a great wife !
Jaehaerys I- Seven Hells! What kinda monster are you?
Viserys I- Despicable! Have you no shame?
Aegon II- meh the city was a pile of 💩 anyways!
Aegon III- How sad! And even more depressed now!
Daeron I- I approve of conquest but not like this!
Baelor- Oh father and mother! Blessed and forgive her of her sins!
Viserys II- well that was awful! No more city to govern.
Aegon IV- Seven hells! I’ll have to build a new city to feast and whore around in
Daeron II- you are despicable and a disgrace!
Aerys I- aye that was brutal! All those books lost 😭
    Maekar I- pure evil!
Aegon V- my great granddaughter has gone mad! What a shame!
Jaehaerys II- Hey at least I tried to be good ruler! I never knew my granddaughter and thankfully so!
Aerys II- Atta girl! That’s my daughter right there! Hey Tywin, It looks like my girl decided to avenge me Ha Ha! My girl killed your kids!!!To all you traitors that betrayed me during my final hours, how do you like dem apples now? To hell with all of you! Burn them all my daughter!!!! Burn them all!!!!
    Other non king Targaryen reactions:

So perfectly said. I know the last season wasn’t everyone’s favorite, and it received a lot of criticism, I do wish we got more time to see her descent to madness - but this moment I actually thought was a good twist. I like how they at least would’ve explored her descent into madness if they had more time and added this moment where she just had a mental breakdown and became crueler than Cersi. Cersi’s face even said it all as she looked upon the chaos, she’s never made such a face of fear (not even to realizing the White Walkers were real) when she saw Daenerys slaughter the kingdom.
They also hinted at this in earlier seasons when we saw the Throne - initially I thought it was snow, as I rewatch the show, I think it foreshadows fire and brimstone with ash. I feel the show always wanted her to end as a Mad Queen.
