I'm beginning to notice just how smart Aemond and Aegon were during this scene. When questioned by Viserys, Aemond obviously lies, redirecting the blame to Aegon. He knew there wasn't much the king would do to him so guaranteed immunity. Also Aegon generalizing his answer, 'everybody knows,' brilliant stuff. Everybody really did know, I mean, Rhaenyra didn't even try. His response was honestly such a checkmate.
both brothers instantly knew what viserys was doing too-he wanted them to throw alicent under the bus by naming her as the source of the "hearsay" to flip the table on her and probably punish her instead (or worse, get rid of her).

Alocent literally made rhaenyra walk to her after birthing a child. She is perfectly capable of her power. Rhaenyra a victim.
i think a lot of people watch this and think that Cole was going to cut out Luke's eye, but he actually refuses her. When she orders him to do it and reminds him that he's her sworn shield, he just reminds her that he's just her protector. I think it's interesting because despite Cole willingness to do anything for his Queen, he refuses her this.
I think it speaks to how Alicent and Criston's friendship and bond is based around decency and good prevailing and holding each other accountable. She made him watch his language, he holds back because he knows that this isn't her, she'll regret violence done in her name when she's free from the horrors of the moment.

I really would've preferred if they previously used the line Rhaenyra says "He must be Sharply Questioned" because the general viewer might not even know that it means torture. It would've made Alicent's actions here even more justifiable, seeing as how Rhaenyra wanted Aemond to be tortured despite the fact that the kid just lost his eye 💀
Rhaenyra was never that blood thirsty towards the greens in the beginning. It would've been inaccurate portrayal of her character. She only truly spirals when the greens (get💀) Luke and ageon decide to throw a feast to celebrate.
@@theeviperxinaccurate they completely whitewashed her
@@kap2652So they did with Alicent and the greens
@@Chasingdreams25 I know and I dislike it what they doing to alicent is crazy she all over the place
@Chasingdreams25 Show Alicent is responsible for much more deaths in the show than in the book, the Dyana scene in the show is a show only invention, the scene where Rhaenyra walks with her child immediately after giving birth is also a show only invention. So what exactly was being whitewashed.
If Aegon and Aemond didn't already believe that Rhaenyra was a threat to them then this scene completely hammered it in. Not only is their half sister completely unremorseful about the incident but she wants Aemond to be 'sharply' questioned over speaking mere facts?? This is the moment the two brothers started seeing sense in Alicent's paranoia. Nobody ever cared for them so the greens decided right there and then to stick together.
And for those that don't know, sharply questioned means torture in GRR Martin speak. He uses it multiple times in the books.
Aemond’s slanders are a direct threat to Rhaenyra and the kids, they could be executed for it, Lord Lyonel literally said this to Harwin, so if anything, it makes perfect sense that Rhaenyra would use sharply questioned as a threat back. Her and her kids’ lives are on the line. She’s fighting for them as you would fight for your own kids and as Alicent would fight for hers.
@@CaptainPikeachu You see, your argument holds no ground here cause Rhaenyra is the one that drew attention to her sons claim in this scene. She could've aplogized to Aemond or maybe punished her kids but no, in true Rhaenyra fashion she had to make it all about her. So no op, this wasn't about her protecting her kids, this was her getting her daddy to silence everybody. She didn't care if her already maimed half brother got tortured, her aim was self preservation.

Everyone states the obvious which is "well even if she's right you still can't demand for a child's eye" but misses the POINT, which is that she never would've been pushed to that point if Viserys had showed concern for his son and given Luke a SUITABLE punishment. His weakness, coupled with his clear indifference to his second family, made Alicent absolutely lose it. This is the result of years of neglect, not just one incident. Add to all of this the fact that these kids were forced on Alicent, by Otto and by VISERYS, who got married to a young girl to strengthen his line of succession (and ruined her life in the process) then when she gave him everything he wanted (a son) he ended up treating them like an expendable second family.
Exactly.
Finally someone understood the fabric of this family.👍🏻💯
"Given luke a suitable punishment" Aemond literally pulled out a knife and could have killed the kids after stealing vhagar (the dragon of the dead mother which adds further insult to injury). @@carlyofearth And who exactly would have ended their lifes? Viserys? No worst case scenario something similar to what happend to Saera Targaryen would have happened to Rhaenyra. Being stripped of her title and being disinherited.
Saera Targaryen has many illegitimate children. They even were present at the great council of 101 that you saw in episode one. And they were unharmed. The problem was that Rhaenyra lied for so long and pretended they were legitimate.

But I don't see how alicent isn't self righteous, just because she's a even bigger victim of the patriarchal society, doesn't mean she isn't self righteous or handling her anger the wrong way.
She's jealous and spiteful towards rhaenyra not suffering the same way as she does, but she, just like cersei, still goes along with patriarchy in her own way. (obviously she never had the options rhaenyra did, but they're both finding their own wrong way of dealing with those problems)

In addition to her son being maimed, Alicent’s real beef with Rhaenyra is that she has constantly flouted their society’s expectations for women and gotten away with it for years. Meanwhile, Alicent has been everything a true lady and queen should be, yet it’s gotten her no real power or guaranteed the future of her children. Whatever issues they have with each other - and there’s hardly a shortage - the larger point being made here is that strong-minded women can never truly win as long as society doesn’t accept them.
#Hallows4 You are exactly right. Rhaenyra never wanted a life of servitude and she sought freedom from that by taking lovers which was frowned upon. Alicent on the other hand decided to be dutiful and live like Ladies were expected to. She had the chance to seek the kind of freedom like Rhaenyra did. Not sure if you were referring to Alicent or Rhaenyra as strong -minded
@@2Duv4Luv They are both very strong minded, make no mistake about that. What neither of them realized in time is how far those around them were willing to go to secure their own power. Rhaenyra felt utterly devastated and betrayed when Aegon was crowned behind her back, and even though Alicent backed her son to the hilt, she was genuinely disgusted when the Small Council plotted to assassinate Rhaenyra. The childhood friends still has feelings for each other, and despite Alicent’s distaste for her husband, forcibly removing his beloved daughter from the equation was something she knew Viserys would never condone.

“Exhausting isn’t it?”....
I know that a lot of people noticed how brilliant the writing was for this particular scene. Rhaenyra was obviously gaslighting Alicent with those remarks. It’s true though what Alicent complained. She was abiding to her duties as a queen while Rhaenyra has been dodging the consequences of her bad actions by using her father’s affection
The writers prefer Rhaenyra.
She wasn’t gaslighting her. Alicent was abusing her for 10 years.
Rhaenyra: I could not find sleep, I'd gone out to walk
Daemon: I'm the walk
Alicent snapped cause she finally realized that no matter what happened Viscerys would always take Rhaenrya side
You can't blame Alicent for her actions in this scene, her son lost an eye and the king ignored it; the worst part is that if Aemond had taken Luke's eye, Viserys would've punished him.
Aemond literally was about to use a rock and smash it on Rhaena and Baela
I blame her for wanting to gouge out another child’s eye just because “eye for an eye”. A queen shouldn’t act irrational like that especially with dozens and dozens of people in the same room. Also blame her for starting the Dance with her “misunderstanding”

Rhaenyra choosing to handle the situation this way changed the way I percieved her character. Alicent's kid lost an eye and she decides to make it about her children's inheirtance being questioned, and almost seems to be smug about getting away with no punishment whatsoever. She says she doesn't want war with the hightowers but is paranoid about it and constantly does actions that shows she is threatened by them. It is a miracle Alicent didn't decide to secretly plot a takedown before Visery's Death. Me personally I'd be all for it after this scene alone.
I agree with you entirely! Rhaenyra has always been spoilt and entitled but this scene took it to a whole new level. @@LivsWings_ Exactly!
aemond called helaena their future queen before this scene happened. she told aegon that he would be king and everyone knows it in the episode prior and was adamant on aegon challenging rhaenyra despite him not wanting to. she was trying to convince viserys that rhaenyra’s children were illegitimate so they she would be disinherited and banished. larys, his father and viserys all pointed out how how badly this would end up for rhaenyra and her kids if it were true. she was already planting the seeds.
and when rhaenyra walked in the first thing she heard was baela saying aemond was trying to kill jace. all those years of her and her kids being targets for criston and alicent didn’t help. so obviously as a mother(same with alicent) the only thing she’s thinking of is protecting her kids above all else. alicent demands to see rhaenyra’s newborn seconds after birth to try to prove those kids illegitimate and rhaenyra finally faces the rumors instead of trying to keep quiet in fear.
"her children's inheritance being questioned" - you mean her literal claim to the throne and her and her children's lives on the line? Alicent *has* lost it in this scene. Understandably, but the various injustices she's suffered don't make it okay for her to try to cut a child's eye out.
I do recognise that Viserys is wilfully blinding himself to Rhaenyra's children being bastards. But what else is he going to do? See his beloved daughter disinherited, imprisoned, exiled, maybe even executed, because she found sexual intimacy where it couldn't exist in her marriage and then lied about it? Hardly the worst crime in history.
What he should have done is pay more attention emotionally to Alicent and his children by her.
I do understand the scene. Still team black though. Not because of having more empathy for black than green, but because the king's word is law and he named her heir.

This is an indicator that Alicent is a good mother. Viserys did not care about his children through the queen's line. This moment shows why these children became attached to Alicent. I’ll never understand how people will actually try to tear Alicent down for coming to the defence of her son, who was just jumped and had his eye cut out for no reason other than his birthright (claiming a dragon), only to get in more trouble for calling Rhaenyra’s sons bastards, which is literally the truth. Then to add onto it all, those very same bastards get away with it, without so much as a word of punishment sent their way.
I swear when you watch this show without those team black tinted glasses, the greens are extremely justified in their mistrust of Rhaenyra.

I like Aegon's answer. It's generalized, it's straight and... Well, let's be honest, it's obvious.
Really shows you how violence is a never ending cycle that leads only to pain and death.
This was the best scene of the season.
I love you alicent hightower 💚💚
What Alicent tried to do is horrible, but somehow I understand her motives. Throughout her life, she saw Rhaenyra get away with everything while she had to conform, marry the king, and bear the king’s children without having any power whatsoever. Demanding an eye for an eye is, for her, a desperate attempt to regain some form of justice and acknowledgment for all the sacrifices she made. But, and understandably, Viserys sides with his daughter once again. For Alicent, it's one time too many; it feels like another of many disregards. She doesn’t feel taken seriously or even considered by her husband. After all these years frustrated by his indifference, when it becomes clear that once again he won’t take her side or the side of her son, she loses it and makes the situation worse.
Many times, we find ourselves in situations where we genuinely believe we are in the right, but we don’t feel considered or understood. Out of frustration, we might act impulsively or irrationally, which can often exacerbate the situation and make things worse, just like Alicent's actions did. It is not approvable, but it’s understandable.
I think it is much more. I think in this situation she and her children understood that Viserys doesn't care or appreciated them and that he never will. I believe Viserys truly liked Alicent, but not enough to actually feel care and love for his children with her.
I think this scene is also what made Aegon and Aemond turn against Rhaenyra. It must have been so disheartening.
I grew up with someone with NPD in the family, the way Rhaenyra acted in this scene and how she lied and manipulated the narrative was exactly what I grew up with. It's textbook gaslighting. She lies about everything here.
She could not find sleep. Had alone time with her uncle on the day of his wifes funeral.
In the beginning of the scene, that is not in this video she lies and constantly changes the narrative. First she said it was an accident. Which was not true. When that doesn't work she flips the narrative and says Aemond attacked them and they were forced to defend themselfs. They actually attacked him and it was 4 v 1. Yes he was tactless, but this is about Rhaenyra trying out different lies until one works. She doesn't actually know what happend, they didn't have time to tell her, she is just making stuffup at this point.
And when people listen she goes even further by demanding that Aemond might be sharply questioned aka tortured. She might poker a bit here, but she uses fear to win this and shut them up.
The worst part, all of this is true. She is trying to gaslight everyone and dominate the situation so that the truth never comes out.
I don't think Rhaenyra is written to have actual NPD. But this is how people with it manipulate situations. It was interesting to see aspects of that in HotD.
