Helping Baby Squirrels takes a bad turn

- My two squirrel friends had the cutest little babies. But I had to interveine… I thought I was doing good but it took a bad turn and that truly scared me. I had to use all of my knowledge and experience to make this right.
…Yes, a next time, I will clean the den BEFORE there are babies ;)

I thought the mom was going to eat the babies because that's what other animals tend to do when they're stressed. Glad to see they're okay!
That's why you should never touch to a mammal's habitat when they're raising their young, much less touch their youngs themselve (unless absolutely necessary).
KitKatKaelyn yea I thought she is a cannibal
Yeah I suppose they really trust him
Same, i was holding my breath when the mama had the baby in its mouth, i was so afraid to see blood
Some captive animals definitely can get too worried about their nest being disturbed and carry their young around until the poor baby dies or people intervene and take it away.
Fun fact...
Squirrels forget about 80% of the nuts they hide in nature and this is a major contributer to new tree growth.
So true, we have a huge chestnut tree in our garden, the nuts they never dug up, resulting having about 8 to 10 little trees growing now about 2 feet tall!!
So technically I'm a squirrel then, but they aren't nuts...
@Yeet_isgold Yeet_king I don't believe anyone commented that peanuts grow in trees. They might've said that then editeded their comment. Lol
Same for ants!
Fun fact 99% percent of people forget they're nuts.

This man is the kindest soul, he has an unbelievably huge heart of pure gold and I love him for it!!! My squirrel used to hop and flip like that when he was playing and I have so many videos of him acting so silly and adorable. I love squirrels, they really are some of the most incredible little creatures, they have the personality of a puppy and a toddler mixed, and they are so funny, each with his own unique personality and temperament. They love to play wrestle, snuggle, and will need tons of attention, but they are so worth it. They dont make the best pets in the way of how much they jump on everything, chew everything, can be quite moody to people they dont trust and often will bite and hard too. But if you are their human, they are loyal, sweet, will even purr like a cat, only faster, and give you kisses!!! Stew, RIP I love you and miss you every day!!!
When I was very young my brother’s & i had a squirrel they named humphry. One day we were cleaning stuff up outside & humphry had a growing stomach. It wasn’t a boy it was a girl & she was pregnant. After a while she had her babies & brought them to see us.They were so cute. After her& her children, etc. we ended up being visited by all the creatures in the neighborhood, they really liked being fed& cared for& I absolutely loved them all. When i got much bigger i helped the neighbors take care of their animals & loved riding the horses the most.I was the only one they would let ride bare back because i got a long with everything/everyone.I know there has to be lots of people who love creatures as much as i do.Keep making this earth a better place for all, with all the love in the world, god bless& have a good life!!!

@Lythnar Bean Everyone tryna flee off the stuff they write with "it's a joke", like yeah everything you're wrong about is joke lmao
OK, I know you didn't ask but... one thing I've learned over the years of keeping animals in cages, be it mammals or reptiles, is the importance of smell in their lives. In the wild, many animals have a home territory with a number of places that can be used as dens, nests etc. They will regularly switch dens or nests to prevent any one becoming too unhygienic or overrun with pests and parasites. Also, if a female mammal has young, she will move them periodically to other dens to prevent their smell drawing predators to them. The mother will be familiar with all the dens and nest sites in her territory, and they may have a lingering trace of her scent in them, too.
When we keep animals in cages we kind of limit their territory size, and generally, there is space for just one den/nest. To prevent the cage getting too dirty we clean it out, but when we do that, we also remove any trace of the animal's smell in the area, and often place it with new and quite strong strange ones. Believe it or not, even snakes get upset if their home no longer smells like it did before. What I do is, when cleaning my snake's cage out, is keep about a scoopful of the old substrate back. I give it a good sift to remove any dust and other debris, then once the rest has been removed, the cage vacuumed to remove dust, washed and dried, and fresh wood chip substrate put back in, I sprinkle the reserved scoopful over the top. That way, whilst the cage might smell mostly strange, there is a bit of his scent left.. A similar thing can be done with mammals: keep a bit of the cage substrate and some of the bedding back to add once the cage has been cleaned.
I apologise if I'm telling you something you already know, but if not, perhaps it will prevent another squirrel panic in the future...
This should be top comment.
I think that horse hair is probably very smelly.
Yeah ngl I know we all make mistakes and it's good that he owned up to it but it would have been good for him to do a lil more research before getting involved
This is really useful to know, thank you!
Ok I've kept snakes my whole life and I've NEVER had a snake stress or get upset from cleaning it's cage. Not once. (And I breed them now and not one time has a snake gotten stressed about changing the cage bedding or lay box bedding.) Maybe y'all got some weird snakes, or I do. lol.

You didn't do anything wrong. Those fleas would have killed them. I have seen fleas kill newly born pups by causing anemia. Glad everything turned out okay.
you can use non toxic, food grade diatomaceous earth to kill the fleas...people can also use it for benefits internally in liquid...do your research ...you can find it in feed stores...just make sure it is food grade, the natural stuff not the synthetic the gov is starting to use in foods pfft...
Glad you got rid of the fleas too. You're a good adoptive Dad.
It’s just nature. A hedgehog also has fleas and a lot too. But next time: never ever destroy the nest. How sad it is to watch the death of a animal, that is the way nature controls the population of species. It’s cruel that I say that but as a vet’s assistant and worker on a animal ambulance I see a lot of people that call for “abandoned” young animals and see how they tried to place a young bird back into the nest etc. My advice: never touch a young animal unless it’s hurt or really is out of it’s place.
But I want to thank you for your service to endangered animals and species. Squirrels are getting on the brink of extinction due to cutting down trees and forests. And everybody loves to see squirrels with those fluffy tails in the forest gathering nuts and seeds for the winter during a walk through a big forest during autumn.

@*-Grim Reaper-* Cubic Castles not sure why your so pissy about d.e....oh well your problem not mine....
It wasn’t you cleaning the box that made her ditch the baby. Animals often abandon babies that are sick or very weak. You cleaning may have been a catalyst to her stressing out enough to behave like that, but it probably would have happened eventually weather or not you did the cleaning, as that baby was clearly not very strong.
And honestly if your options are “clean the box and risk the mother being stressed out” and “Leave the babies to get sick and diseased by letting them live in a pit of fleas” then you made the right call, and doing anything else would have been neglectful, and they all would have then been abandoned.
Okay...
@@vanshikaverma4248 ?
I agree
@matt vanbeekveld this is an outdated train of thought and absolutely incorrect. People used to think the same of birds, but guess what? Birds have an underdeveloped sense of taste and smell, so they don't abandon their babies due to our smell. I've also had rodents for many, many years of my life. There have been 2 occasions in which my mice mommies have died from cancer, a sad reminder that our beloved pet shop rodents hail from lab stock according to our vet, hence the reason they get cancer and respitory infections so often. It's in their DNA. Anyway, I raised 2 lots of newborn baby mice. On both occasions some remarkable things happened. The fathers took over after I'd fed them. I would get up every 3 hours to feed and them give them back to dad who would scoop them up and lay over them to keep them warm until the next feed. We worked in tandem like this until they were grown up and self sufficient. My 3rd experience was with a pet rat who came to me pregnant. Well, she birthed 9 lovely pups. I tried not to interfere too much as I didn't want to disturb her, but I had to clean the cage after a few days, so although I tried not to disturb the nest, I did cause her an enormous amount of anxiety. While cleaning the cage, she began to move her babies out, one by one. I had forgotten to close the door when I went to wash the bowls out and came back to find her babies strewn across my floor in a line towards my wardrobe where she was moving them up into my clothing. So I had to move them all back and her and I ended up being counterproductive as she'd try and move them the moment I put them back. So I put her in a separate box and put all her babies back, then reintroduced her. I covered her cage and prayed for the best as I have had both mice and rats eat their babies before, never a pleasant experience. Well, she had settled down and went back to being an excellent mommy who fed all her babies until weening. The reason they eat or kill their babies is due to ill health, stillborn or stress episodes that cause anxiety. Also lack of food resources may cause her to kill them. It really isn't because of our smell. Over my years of owning rodents, beginning around 5 yrs old under my own mother's guidance up into my 40's with my own children's pet rodents I've seen so many births and infanticide and also assisted many mothers with their litters and I can assure you they don't kill them because of our smell on their babies. If that were the case, I'd have had every litter dead through all of those years. Rodents are fantastic parents, just try not to stress them out or allow their surroundings to cause anxiety. But sometimes we have no choice but to interfere and let me tell you, by being gentle and respectful, you can also gain a mother rodents trust and she will allow you to touch her babies and move them as you clean around them, they're extremely intelligent animals. If you think I'm talking nonsense, please feel free to do your own research and you will find out the truth.
@matt vanbeekveld you don't know much about animals obviously LOL
Must watch his EXPRESSION after he came to know that mama squirrel was alive.
So genuine !!!

Momma's know when something is wrong with a kit. They often abandon sick ones in the wild because it takes resources from the other kits. It's sad, but survival of the fittest is a very real thing in the wild.
Spookworm Very true. Some of the babies people find and attempt to raise show neurological and other symptoms. Not always, sometimes it's a fluke that they're out of the nest, but sometimes Momma knew something was off.
You are right. But, in thus case,, the mom took a second baby out, it wasn't just the one that needed extra help.
@@awarenessvillage The reason she kept taking babies out was because they all smell of human and she had nowhere else to put them because she thought that the original den was gone because that he was cleaning out the den and the squirrel scent was gone.
Edit: Ive seen the replies and you're right he did raise the squirrels after all and I don't think she would just abandon them because they smelt of human and also the den he cleaned out he did in fact replace the beding with horsehair so that must have been pretty odd for the squirrel to smell a horse instead of her own scent.
That's true, but with respect, "survival of the fittest" refers to an animal's suitability to its environmental niche, not to its physical health and fitness in the modern sense.
@@e.s.r5809 You just twisted that whole thing. Survival of the fittest means the most fit to the environment SURVIVE to carry on the species.

She probably saw how well you helped her babies and kept asking for more help by taking her kits out. It’s very very obvious she trusts you whole heartedly, I would not be surprised if she just needed that extra hand from her parents to help her be a parent. 😊
Loves this video! I even cried a little. You're a great dad! You did so well with all of them. Thanks for sharing. 😊

I actually cried when the littlest one managed to pull through. I was fully expecting horrible tragedies and ready to leave, but I'm so glad I stayed.
That was a rollercoaster ride. The complete change of the nest/ nesting material must have so disturbed her that she tried to evacuate the babies and got totally crazy. But that's why I find it so good that you post this video, because it shows how animals can react and anyone who watched this video and wants to help squirrels will now know.
I just found your channel today and I am magnetized. You are doing such a wonderful work with so much passion. Thank you for sharing.
It's interesting: The moment you brought her inside, she accepted the nest. Is it because the overall envirornment had changed and the nest was now something familiar? Or was it the overall smaller and safer surrounding that made her relax? I find your videos very informative. And emotionally moving.
I have a special place in my heart for the reddish-brown squirels because they are so under pressure in Europe. I have one squirrel near my apartment (I live in a very big city - several million- like big) and I love watching her (or him) when they sit in the tree in front of my window. Beautiful animals. And great to know someone is putting so much work and love into helping them.
This man has the purest heart , he treated his squirrels as his babies...
that baby must have been a runt
He then fattens them up and eats them.
@@FarmerFpv In Peru we do that to the guinea pigs (that was their original reason for being domesticated, being eaten)
Thank u go trying so hard and for saving th a t precious little life...we've raised 8 baby squirrels since last spring..
The last two just died before we could release them back to the wild...don't know why they just suddenly died a week apart....it was so terrible after we bonded with them all those weeks and lost them so suddenly...I love ur videos and seeing u love and care for God's creatures ❤ 💔 😢
Eating guinea pigs in South America
This man deserves the world, he takes care of so many animals and truly cares about them. Others might have just been like "well, I'm just gonna put him back I the next and if he does, he dies!" But he tried his very best to take care, and revive the poor squirrel
this is true his love for the shows
Ya, but ironically many of the people who watch his videos wouldn't even bother to let the ads role to support the channel. It's less than the world, it's just few seconds..
Your right
I love animals and this makes me happy

Even if one had died he buries them on a bed of flowers
He lost her brother. Did everything he could, but the odds of even one of them surviving were extremely low.
Only when the fox ate them

Then be like him
There are people just like him.
We don’t have enough of this type of people on this planet. People who take care of what’s around them, not just destroy and consume.
You can find plenty of videos of people having done this _the_ _right_ _way_ , where the mother will happily let them play with the kits, and coming back next year to visit again.
Taking away the box with the mother watching, and replacing the nest material was really stupid, and alarmed her enough to drag around a kit for an hour, nearly killing it.
But, I guess we all have to learn somehow.
They should be out in woodland not a cage
@@silvergreylion If there are flies on the kits, there are flies everywhere in the enclosure. Flies jump on and off animals to feed and lay their eggs in crevices.
My suggestion was to heat up the entire nest at 160°F for about 2 minutes in an oven and/or to sprinkle diatomaceous earth everywhere in it and around the enclosure. Probably the diatomaceous earth only would have been enough and caused the less disturbance.
But he still has a flea problem.
Where are his horses?
@@silvergreylion THANK YOU!!! Anyone who has cared for a variety of small mammals knows this happens. I just kept watching thinking, "Oh, please don't do that!"
