- Wow, I was so lucky to walk into this once in a lifetime opportunity! But these giant Nandu eggs had been laying there for weeks... would I stand any chance incubating them?

I went and visited my grandparents today and they showed me a nest of wild quail eggs they found in their yard, they told me that the father quail was gone for over a week and the mother was killed by a crow the night before I visited them. They thought the eggs were dead and was going to throw them away but I warmed them up with my body heat and found their blood vessels still moving. I took them home and now I have 14 quail eggs that are waiting to hatch. I really hope everything will be fine and they will hatch successfully and survive :)

@@breannalaney593 7 of them hatched yesterday! Now the little guys are just sleeping in the box I set up for them. There are still 7 more eggs though, and two of them I haven’t seen any movement, I hope they are just late bloomers and will survive

I can't believe that little egg was abandoned for weeks in the elements and that baby still survived all the way to hatching, what a strong little one. AAlso you're so very sweet the way you treat these animals, it makes me want to cry, there aren't many people in this world as genuinely kindhearted all the time.
It sure goes to show the durability of their eggs, it kept it able to survive... one out of seven... this is the DNA the Earth wished for~
@Leslie Scott The durability of the shell isn't that great when 1 out of 7. That's only a 14.3 survivable rate.

The egg took 38 days to hatch... It means that this one wasn't incubating when he collected them.

I am a volunteer at the local farm of my City, sometimes i find abandoned eggs.
When i find an abandoned egg, ill take it to a warm place as fast as possible to make it stay alive.
I've already saved the lives of more then 20 birds so far, and i used the help from your videos.

It's astonishing even ONE of the eggs hatched, but this is obviously a very special bird. You'll have to keep us updated on her journey to adulthood.
It's definitely a miracle that even one of those abandoned eggs hatched. This little survivor is definitely the strongest of the bunch.
When I am completely convinced this world is a sewer and meanness, selfishness, ignorance and suffering are in great abundance, Then I watch a video like this and it puts a smile on my face and warm my heart.

I just hope that all the other life survives us. We are the virus that needs to be eradicated to preserve the beauty and sanctity of this precious garden
I have never loved a stranger on the internet as much as I love this man. His love of birds and animals reminds me of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. If he was alive today, he'd be this guy.

This might sound weird, but this evokes the same feeling as hearing The Jurassic Park theme. In fact put it over the video and it’s perfect. That feeling of wonder and amazement of experiencing that life for the first time from seeing dinosaurs to watching a chick aggressively hatching out of the egg, same exact feeling. Also because birds are descended from dinosaurs and that large species is definitely reminiscent of a dinosaur.

That's because dinosaurs are heavily inspired by birds and lizards, which come out of eggs.

When I was a small boy my dad built an incubator and got a dozen bantam eggs. There is nothing so satisfying as becoming a chicks parent! When I watch your videos I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Thank YOU!!

My 8 years old daughter has you as a role model. She got an incubator from Santa, and all she reads about is ducks, eggs and birds. We had a baby duck, which she hatched, but unfortunately he didn’t survive.

8 years old seems way too young for this. Did she try to “help” the chick out of the shell? Is that why it didn’t survive?
Heat lamp, just like chickens they cannot maintain warmth for the first few weeks without help. Temp must be over 95 degrees Fahrenheit. You can feed them crumbles just like chicken. They will carry feed at a feed store. Fresh filtered water is a must.
Do your own research. Having animals is not a cute hobby for kids. Its up to you to ensure the survival of any animal that you bring into your home. If you bring your child back from the hospital after giving birth, and it dies, do you say on CZcams, make a video for me because I did not know what I was supposed to do with my baby and it died? You'd be in jail. Unfortunately, we cannot put people in jail for murdering animals through their own stupidity and laziness. Giving a child an incubator is an irresponsible and f-king dumb thing to do. Don't play with the lives of animals, they are not toys you dumb sh-t! This is no better than all the reptiles sold to kids who die miserably in cages due to stupidity, laziness, and lack of feeling. DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK AND DON'T KILL ANY ANIMALS THAT HAD THE MIRACLE TO BE BORN. IDIOTS!!!

The key words here was “she (her daughter) hatched” the duck chick’s egg. That indicates the daughter got involved with helping the chick out of the egg, and f’d everything up at that point (either due to lack of knowledge, not being patient, or not being gentle enough if it actually was necessary to get involved - which is very rarely needed - or a combination of all three). That is typical with young kids. She was most likely trying to help, and not realizing she was doing wrong.
The parents encouraging this at such a young age by buying her an incubator was very naïve/ignorant/dumb, imo. There are many ways to foster a child’s interest that won’t put any innocent animal lives at risk.
Everyone needs to find themselves someone who looks at them the way this man looks at a floating egg

So heartwarming what efforts you invest to save even one chick. You know that the babies talk to each other while still inside the egg, and they hear your voice, too. So keep talking to them so they know to follow you. Anyway you are doing a great job, I love to watch your videos. I saved numerous kittens, in awfully bad condition, so I know how much it takes, to feed little birdies also at night and worry about whether they make it or not. I was able to save my brahma chick because of what I learned from you! Her mommy stepped on her right when she started pecking at her shell to hatch. I kept the membrane moist with a brush and some water all night untill she was ready to hatch. She is about 6 weeks old now and I love her very much! Ze heet Barstje (spreekt het uit als Basje).
Its so heartwarming when someone stays up all night to take care of an animal. I know the feeling. It's heartbreaking when you fail but when the animal makes it it makes it all worth it. You're a good person!

I mean, that's actually the scientific name of the bird as well as the most common used name.

i hope she survives the long and perilous process of growing up! but if she doesnt, please don't be too hard on yourself. from the videos ive seen of the urban rescue ranch, who also raises rheas/nandus, the ratite babies are EXTREMELY accident prone for quite a while and the smallest stresses can be fatal for them, so its much rarer for them to survive than not, even with human help.
with all that doom and gloom out of the way, i hope she does well and grows up to be big and strong 💕

He was a great person, a man with a real passion - he also had a big interest in birds and he was the one to awake that passion for animals in me. And seeing people like you and him, so caring and always willing to help these little ones, this is what powers me to also be like this.

I wish you plenty of luck! :) I have always loved animals too, so I was thinking of becoming a veterinarian when I was in high school. I took an advanced placement biology class in high school when I was 16, and that immediately changed my path for what I was going to pursue as a career lol. We were very fortunate to dissect a human cadaver, but it was also very psychologically difficult for some of the class, including myself.
When my day came for my partner and I to dissect the part of the body we were signed up for, I chickened out and stayed home “sick.” I just couldn’t get myself to do it, even though I thought it would be the least disturbing part of the body to personally dissect (arm/leg).
Because it was the first year my high school started the dissection program, the LA Times newspaper for our county did a big story about it and visited one day to interview us and take pictures. They featured me as the big photo for the front page of the Section B article, and put a big quote of what I said to them next to it...
The photo was of me plugging my ears with my kitchen gloves on, with a horrified scrunched up face, as I watched and listened to the cadaver’s ribs being cracked with a surgical tool to get into its chest cavity. The featured quote of mine they put next to the photo was me read _“This class changed my mind about everything. I don’t want to do anything with biology anymore.”_ Lol.
Because it was so traumatizing for me (even though I _VERY MUCH_ value everything I learned in that incredible experience), I had quite an awakening. After school one day, I saw my mom cooking chicken, and it looked *EXACTLY* like muscle in our bodies. It made me think about the fact that my mom could theoretically be cooking human, and I would never be able to tell the difference. It was then that it really clicked with me just how disturbing eating flesh is, so I became a vegetarian pretty much overnight. It has been 30 years now since I stopped eating animals, and strictly only love them instead.
I chose to pursue a graphic design degree and worked in the music industry instead of becoming a vet. However, that class affected some others very differently... One of my classmates, who I ended up dating for a little while when in college, _DID_ actually become a veterinarian! Another person became a brain surgeon working for USC!
I can easily understand why the brain surgeon classmate would have been motivated to pursue that field. I remember the day we dissected the human brain, and it was so overwhelming. Just watching the brain specialist doctor who led the class that day hold a human brain in his hands, and chop it up as if it were a meatloaf, stirred up a lot of emotions in me...
When he held it, it was impossible to not think about the fact that he was holding the organ that interpreted all of this man’s life experiences, stored his entire knowledge base, all of his memories, and the man’s personality. And then to chop it up like that instinctively came off to me as being very disrespectful, detached, and cold, seemingly not respecting the gravity of what he was doing. Such behavior is obviously a result of surgeons needing to distance themselves from human emotions when focusing on their work, but we were only 16, ffs.
I think that classmate may have viewed the experience similarly, and was inspired out of compassion to help save lives by surgically fixing people’s medical problems with their brains.
Sorry this was a rather long comment… Just know that if you pursue biology, you will need a strong stomach for when you reach the point that you do dissections! I’m sure you have already probably had some experience with this on dissecting a frog, and/or a fetal pig/cat. I was very disturbed in middle school with the frog dissection, so there was no way I was going to be able to do a baby pig in high school (which was done in the same Bio AP class, before the human dissection).
I took the option of going to the library when the rest of the class was doing that project, and writing a research paper instead, but my beloved teacher convinced me to at least *just watch* the human dissection - that my grade wouldn’t suffer if I couldn’t hack doing any of the dissection myself. I’m grateful she did that.

Honestly I haven't had any experience with dissecting animals yet, even though in my highschool I've been in a class with extended biology & chemistry profile. It's just not a practice in my country but I'm sure I'll experience something like this during my biology studies and I don't think that I'll have much problem with that to be honest. Actually way before I wanted to study biology I had a dream to go to the medical school and to become a doctor (though I gave up this dream when the reality hit me and I realized what are the requirements to even get to the medical school and how good I must've done on my finals to get there haha)
The one thing I still have left from that is my big interest in various medical procedures. I watch a lot of things like operations being performed etc. on CZcams or Instagram and I find myself very interested in that and blood or human organs usually aren't something that makes me disgusted so I think I'll do pretty good with things like dissecting animals etc.
But to be honest it's all still before me and I'll really just have to see what will happen when I will have to do something like that hah
But that doesn't make me any less eager to study biology because this is something, that I've been passionate about my whole life and I am excited to see what the future holds for me :D

Oh no problem! I guess you didn’t want to share which country you’re from? Or forgot I asked? 😋 I was just curious because I wanted to know if it was a big or small or advanced/unadvanced country didn’t have any sort of animal dissections in biology class in school before reaching university. If it was outlawed, or just no established programs for that kind of thing due to limited resources or something. That’s all. Oh well.
Preparing yourself by watching the type of videos you watch is definitely helpful (even if you end up dropping out of a biology major, there is a lot you can learn from those types of videos regardless)! I will forewarn you though that when you dissect human cadavers and/or other animals that have been preserved, there is no blood (that gets pumped out), but the smells and sounds are still very overwhelming...
In fact, the smell of formaldehyde is so intense when we dissected the human cadaver that we had to have a huge box fan at the classroom door, with the door to the outside open at all times, and that *still* wasn’t enough to take care of the stomach-turning powerful smell.
And the smell of using a surgical electric power saw to open up the skull is extremely loud and smells like a dentist drilling into your tooth, times 100… It is a strong smell of burning bone. 😬 That kinda thing. Holding organs is also pretty crazy, because they are slimy and weigh a lot more than you would think. You can even feel and see air bubbles come out of a cut off piece of lung when you squish it, kind of like it is a sponge (crazy to think about the fact that we were expelling the man’s last breath when we squeezed it out with our hands!).
Dissecting really use _ALL_ of your senses, versus just using your eyes when watching videos. Nevertheless, it is extremely fascinating and you get to learn soooo much about how everything functions and looks on the inside of _YOU_ (my favorite, funny enough, was how beautiful human testicles look on the inside lol - they are a shiny iridescent white color (like a pearl) - my boyfriend was quite flattered when I informed him of this fact hahaha).
Anyways, it will definitely be an interesting experience for you! It is a wondrous thing to see how life works in that kind of way - quite the privilege. For a very long time in history, it wasn’t allowed - due to religious reasons and such. That’s why it really is an honor, especially since people who aren’t even morticians or professional scientists are allowed to do it.
That experience from 30 years ago is helping me quit smoking at the moment too, because it was such a strong memory to see firsthand just how super gross lungs can look from smoking, with all the tar in it. It keeps me motivated to stay quit, as the body is so amazing that it can mostly heal itself once you quit, if you quit in time (destroyed cilia won’t regrow, unfortunately - once one gets destroyed, that’s the end of the lil’ helpful thing).

I tried to help a baby bird recently, I almost got it to eat by playing the sounds of sparrows feeding their chicks. Unfortunately it wasn't to be, the bird was too far gone and in shock and going cold. I was heartbroken when it died. But your tips are so valuable so we can all at least try to help. Couldn’t you possibly squeeze in the tip of tweezers or something thin like that into the side of its beak, and then turn the tool to crank its beak open just enough to forcefully get some water/blended up food into the bird? When birds are injured or quite weak, they aren’t even going to bother opening their mouths when they need food. We have to force sustenance into them until they get more energy/out of the danger zone.

Just volunteering in the shelters. Helping animals anyway you can means you're already living the dream. But with time & hard work I'm very sure you'll succeed at helping even more animals of all kinds.
I'd like to volunteer at a place like this but unfortunately due to fibromyalgia & other health problems. I haven't been able to do so. Well that & there's none the city bus can take me too easily.
So in the meantime I try to support the various channels like this by watching them & not using an ad blocker. Although admittedly I do still press skip.

They're also hilarious to watch & have spawned multiple channels from other family members. They have goats,over protective alpacas, a tamed wild boar raised from infancy & now ostriches.
Not only do they have ostriches but their male Carl did what experts said was impossible. Naturally hatched out 3 ostrich chicks & the parents have been raising them. 2 boys & a girl.
