He was killing my birds, until he made one mistake...

  • At night a fox was hunting on my domain. So every evening I took all of my feathered friends safe inside. My heart broke when he attacked during daytime and killed five of my ducklings. Then he made a mistake...
Everywhere in the world it is known: Chickens and other small livestock can walk outside during the daytime... But at night they need to be protected, for at night, the fox is on the hunt.
The most terrible happened, this fox was weird. He broke in to a little pen I had with five of the sweetest ducklings. Within no time at all he had killed every singel one of them.
He had even followed one of the ducklings through my backdoor and killed that one too.
A fox showing this behaviour, during the daytime, not even scared of coming into my home, is not right. I didn't know if he was a danger to me too. Maybe he had even rabies.
Obviously this fox had to go, but how? Then I got lucky.
Because of my Patreons I was able to build a fox proof pen. Thank you so much!

That is when I found out that Foxes DO actually eat Grapes, and this Fox loved them!! She had a method for holding them up in the tip of her mouth and letting them fall back and chomping them down, I could tell she liked for the sweet juice to squirt in her mouth! As a person who loves foxes and puts them on number one on favorite animal list for years, I respect he didn’t kill it or anything like that. It really makes me happy, and it’s so interesting. I love learning about animals, and foxes are one of my favorite topics. Like he said: just a skinny animal following their nature. Someone pointed out that the fox was skinny, and was most likely desperate enough to hunt during the day. Seeing him run around in that dune reservation made my already growing smile even bigger. You can’t blame something for following the instincts of thousands of years to hunt. But I can totally get why you would blame the fox, but in my opinion, he’s just an animal fighting to survive.

I'm not surprised that rooster was crowing. He looks like he has a bit of game bird stock in him. I have a friend who worked at a farm that bred game birds. He had a pen full of spare roosters that had to be fed through the cage bars because they were so aggressive. One day a fox broke into the run, and the owner discovered it the next morning *torn to pieces.* Game birds do not give a damn.

Been there. One spring morning, between 10:30 and 11:00, a fox chased, killed and took away all my 4 hens that I had raised since chicks. He did the same to all the chickens on the street, in other days.
They are not exclusively nocturnal, they hunt anytime and particularly in spring when they have a litter to feed. And they can swim so I hope the canal wasn't the only obstacle you counted on.
The rooster is not dumb, he's just doing his job: draw attention to him and away from the yummy hens and chicks. Why do you think a typical chicken family has one rooster and dozens of hens when chicks are born half male and half female? Attrition.

An animal that calm (no shaking, no drooling) does NOT have rabies. It's not true that foxes only hunt at night. When I lived in the countryside, I would commonly see foxes during the day, especially in the spring when they had kits to feed. I have to admire the fox -- he (or she) is one very cool customer.

What a gorgeous fox! I can relate to this as I raised ducks once and had a rescued mallard I raised along with my other ducklings. I named him Dr. Jones he was the coolest little dude and followed me around just like the other ducks. Bonded to me and let me hold and pet him. He never flew away either he would go back into the enclosure every night with the rest of them though he was free to fly away. But, there were bald eagles watching and one night Dr. Jones snuck out under the gate through a gap and the eagle got what it was so patiently waiting for. I was upset, and cried, but didn't hate the eagle. It was amazing to have such incredible animals all around and a bald eagle in the backyard was so magestic. I just accepted it for what it was, and felt grateful for the experience of raising the little guy.
