As much as I want to say that's hyperbolic, this time it's more true than false.
Purchase history is something called a "lagging indicator".
Ads based on purchase history is usually shit you already bought or shit you are already buying.
Should you buy more.of what you already bought or buying? Probably not.
After I buy something like a vacuum cleaner, Amazon ads blasts me with some FOMO ads of other vacuum cleaners with "SALE!!!" prices that are not really on sale encouraging me to buy a second one I do not need. Of course I'm not buying because im the type that researches before I buy. There are more impulsive buyers who are more affected by ads probably buying a lot of shit they already have which they absolutely shouldn't buy.
Then there are CZcams ads which are scams. Imagine if you bought into a crypto scam and now they are serving you all the crypto scams. You are stupid enough to get scammed once, now here's 99 opportunities to get scammed twice.

A human being never sees who it goes to, nor could they. That said, it is sorta freaky and definitely a less ethical way to diversify revenue streams. This whole "your data is being sold" thing is kinda bs unless they actually sell your email address or contact info or your name - yes, they wouldn't even know your name, or that it went to your device, or you even exist. I just started playing their stupid game. Need a direct deposit to waive the fee? Okay, I'll transfer a penny to a PayPal account, pay myself at another one and withdraw. Set a floor on that deposit's size? Okay, on TaskRabbit I could turn off per-gig payments and move lumps. TR took back that option, okay, now if I have $250 for a few days I can do the PayPal play with but Cash App, once again meeting the requirement. Some bank to bank transfers made with BillPay meet it too. It's customer unfriendly, sure, but they do some things better than any other bank I've tried. I play the stupid game.

I have an idea? Whether it will work or not, I don't know. What about using a debit card like PayPal to make purchases which pull from the assigned account? Will it show up on your Chase/Wells Fargo/whatever bank statement as PayPal*nameofperson $34.33 debit? Or will it shove the original merchant info through to your bank? Does PP debit card even work that way anymore?

    • @MrInternetMan

This is yet another breach just waiting to happen.

Nice thing is that they have a free envelope to send them junk back to them that charge the company. Everyone needs to do this. Probably in the last year alone have did 15 bucks worth of charges.

The answer (but hard) solution to many of these privacy, TOS, etc etc issues is to do what they say in the Open Source community..
    "Don't get mad, fork it!"
You have to make the consumer friendly alternative. It sucks that this has to extend to banks now but probably overdue C'est la Vie.
