    Once upon a time, cable television was ad free. That cable bill paid monthly covered the cost of maintaining it, and providing entertainment. Then the cable companies grew and got greedy. Their billing rates grew, and they started including advertisements in what was once promoted as ad free content. At first it was content related to the channel, then national franchises, and now it includes ads from Joe's Garage down the street. So canceled my cable subscriptions, and started streaming paid streaming networks. And now, they are injecting ads into what was only a short time ago, ad free. I haven't watched television for going on fourteen years. Do I own a TV? Yes, but I use it exclusively for streaming add free content. On very few occasions, and only if it is a very good movie, or show, will I opt to watch an ad paid program. But it is my choice, not theirs. I can always say no, and purchase a license to watch it ad free. Sometimes I do, if it is a very good movie. Needless to say, I have a very large movie library that I can choose from, royalties paid, no ads, and everyone is happy, except for the advertising companies. Screw them!

Largely many of us even agree with some of the principles they espoused like economic fairness and that workers should be respected.
    What horrified many people was the constant monitoring of normal citizens. Surveillance o daily habits, phone conversations, mail, conversations electronically tapped, informants paid to report on variances in activity. (All things happening in modern Russia, China, and North Korea btw.)

    So, the thing that angered me the most about the patent is that even though platforms can choose to do their own user experience, Roku has to go out of their way to say we're going to interrupt the PS5 for instance, which Sony should get to control their own xperience, but they don't because Roku would shove with ads that Sony doesn't get any control over.
    It's effectively saying no one gets to control the user experience on our TV through the HDMI ports, which is bad. It's like that free TV where they made you watch ads and sell your data for a free TV. Basically malware.
    If this ever becomes an actual product, I hope Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo come together and sue Roku for damages to their brand.

    just wanted to add real quick: in regards to roku's forced abritration, I was unsure exactly what to include in THE PHYSICAL LETTER they require, since some of the terms were vague. I contacted support and the only way to do so was either via telephone or via web chat. On the chat, I asked how to decline the arbitration, whether or not a receipt was actually required or not/how to find out if I needed to include a receipt and if so, how to opt out if I don't have the receipt because the actual article said I MAY need a receipt included in the PHYSICAL MAIL. All of this to say, I was told REPEATEDLY to "Just accept the terms". After 15 minutes of this loop of "I dont want to please answer my question" and "shut up and do as youre told", I finally asked how I could refund my tv, and was told to call.

      A huge part of the problem with forced arbitration is that companies are getting even more bold once they enact it. I used to have pretty consistently good customer service experiences with all of the major brands I shopped with but these days I can't even get a simple question answered without jumping through hoops and having to get rude. Even then they just aren't helpful, the usual answer nowadays is something along the lines of "the system is working as intended on our end".

Then cable came in with the promise of more channels and no adds. They then got greedy and started to double dip pay for no adds + they put adds back in.

      After all, I got the TVs partially due to the built-in "tuning" they had, and also because they tended to be a little cheaper than a computer monitor of the same size (however, the computer monitors tend to be higher resolution than the TVs). And since I already had the TVs, I saw no reason I couldn't use them as a "monitor" for my computers (as well as other video/streaming devices I own). However, if the TVs ever change in a way that interferes with my use of the HDMI inputs, I will start replacing those TVs with newly purchased "dumb monitors" (and just do all of my "streaming" via HDMI connected computers and other HDMI devices)....

    Are these companies TRYING to make us hate them?
    We need a cottage industry of "lobotomy boards" for replacing the brains of these devices and dumbing them down to doing the bare minimum. I imagine it would come in two parts: a system-specific board for dealing with the screen and maybe the built-in speakers, and a generic one for handling inputs and outputs to other devices. The latter would take whatever assortment of inputs you decide to put on it and produce a DisplayPort signal to go to the former board (at the panel's native resolution), and maybe some outputs to go with other things (audio being the main one most people would care about). The former would take that internal DisplayPort signal and use it to control the actual screen. DisplayPort does allow sending audio over it, so whatever's going to the internal speakers can be sent over that and into a DAC for wiring to them if needed. Why DisplayPort specifically? Because it's free to use, unlike HDMI, which charges a fee. That way, the generic board would be the only one attracting the fees, and the cost could be spread out across the greater numbers of them.

During the commercial break, we would get up and do something, but we would also _talk._ I mean, we could talk during a show, except for when Dad was watching MASH. (No talking during MASH!!) Now I feel like the show has got our full attention, finger hovering over "skip ad." Or we're playing with our phones while watching said show. Rarely any real communication. Don't get me wrong, I loathe ads (especially that stupid Burger King ad 🙉), but I know how you feel. There's something nostalgic about traditional commercial breaks.

    If there is no option to disagree and continue to use the old terms, the new terms cannot be legally binding or enforceable.
    Almost all companies are getting on board with this now since they see that others are getting away with it. We need a good lawsuit to make both arbitration and the inability to decline new terms absolutely and unquestionably illegal.
    And the people responsible for adding the terms should all be fired (without any kind of severance package) as punishment.

    • @irae9
      @irae9 Před měsícem +1

      The issue with this is that most ToS conditions have a clause to the effect "We reserve the right to make changes to these terms at any time". In order to solve this, we would basically need some type of regulation that outlaws such clauses, however that would likely also impact a lot of legitimate businesses, when companies get bought/merged/etc and that changes how they operate, or they have to comply with some new regulation themselves. The real solution here is to simply outlaw ToS and EULAs as a whole on anything and everything that is bought and paid for. Also, for any actual recurring subscription "service", have a regulation to the effect that they can't change any terms during the subscription period that has been paid for, only when it is time to renew.
