I don't think they really know all that much. It's talked about that way, and yeah, they have massive amounts of data, but how accurate is that? I use Facebook a lot, and they have this ability to see how your interests have been categorized. They had a long list of interests logged in my account details, and out of curiosity I tried to estimate how much they really know. Estimated about 25% was in the category "I don't know if I like it or not, because I don't know what it is". Then about 25% in the category "I hate this". Again 25% in the category "I'm indifferent or it's ok". Only about 25% were true interests of mine.

More telling is the part where the advertising agency representatives don't want to give a real number. Remember, they're selling the ads, not whatever the ads are for.

Labeling people who oppose you as "extremists" has become pretty common because it allows people to just decide "well, they're extremists; they're irrational and not worth listening to" rather than incentivizing anyone to sit down and listen to what "the other side" has to say.
Sometimes people actually ARE extremists. Sometimes they're not. But regardless of the issue (tech, advertising, abortion, religion, civil rights, gun ownership, etc), it's so easy to just label EVERYONE who disagrees with you as extremists (and, to be fair, there are extremists on both ends of the spectrum for a lot of these issues) than to try to listen to someone who disagrees with you but ISN'T ACTUALLY an extremist and hold a conversation.
A lot of issues (not all of them, but a lot of them) where there are two major schools of thought can be discussed with a certain amount of nuance in terms of legitimate concerns that people on both sides of the issue have. But that has to start with people on both sides being willing to start by asking people who don't like them "what are your concerns and how can I address them in a way that we can both be happy with" instead of just saying "I'm objectively right and anyone who disagrees is an extremist."

    • @0LoneTech
      @0LoneTech Před 10 měsíci +1

Some extremists are extremely worth listening to. For instance, RMS holds the position that software should all be fully user respecting, which he branded as "free software". I think, like the patent system, there could be a more moderate position; e.g. video games could have a window of time when they're not freely reproducible, for rewarding the developers, much like the patent system was intended. Some corporations like Disney and Nintendo hold views at the opposite extreme, that the populace should not have the choice to even maintain their purchased games, let alone share them.

No no no, this is the issue with English only having the 1 word "free" for multiple different meanings. They mean free like free beer. Google assistant is free as in free beer and it's shitware spying garbage. The only thing you should ever concern yourself over is the free as in freedom internet. Ads threaten this, not the other way around.

The online ad industry destroyed itself with greed. Likely 99.99999% of on like ads are effectively trying to cheat people out of money, mislead, or scam them. Even when they are unimpeded in their tracking, they still show bad ads. For example, if I am looking for 140mm fans with higher RPMs and static pressure to replace the fans on my NH-D15 heatsink, then show me ads for fans that offer more airflow and static pressure than the stock fans. I have tried disabling all ad blocking and all privacy and even with insane amount of tracking, (tons of CPU time spent on tracking scripts), none of the ads had anything to do with 140mm fans. Instead much of it was for scam products and overpriced junk from shady sites offering the junk at higher prices than amazon and Newegg.
Aside from that, there is no accountability for ad networks, thus there is no motivation for them to deal with scammers and malvertising. The people in my neighborhood who used to constantly get their systems infected, stopped having those issues when ads were blocked on all of their browsers.
If you look at sites like bleeping computer, you will see reports covering boilerplate no apologies from a wide range of major sites when they get caught serving ads that also run a large exploit toolkit and result in tens tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people getting their systems infected with malware that steals their passwords and encrypts their files for ransom.
Far fewer people would block ads if the ad companies were treated like how certificate authorities are treated, where a breach of trust, allowing fraudulent or malicious abuse of the system, will often get every major browser and OS maker to blacklist that certificate authority, thus effectively putting them out of business. This forces then to be more proactive in dealing with abuse.

There was once a time when advertising was used to help support the free and open internet.
Today content is used to push advertising. Big ad companies have purchased a lot of mainstream websites, or they've created websites like BuzzFeed. They use clickbait articles to push ads.
When less than 10% of my screen is content and most of it is advertising and it's full motion video, then you realize the content actually was not really any content. It was just there to get you to click through. That's the problem.
They want the max headroom world where having an off switch on a TV was considered illegal.....

Web searches have been made far less usable by floods of computer generated content to get you to see ads. Try searching for food recipes. You'll come across hundreds of sites rambling on many things only tangentially related to a recipe for a few pages worth of text before you actually come across the ingredients so that you have to scroll past more ads.

I've been sitting here really thinking hard about it and I can honestly say that I don't think ads ever influenced me into buying a single thing after my kid/teenager years. Whenever I see an ad, I kinda put that product on a do not buy list in the back of my mind. As a kid tho it's way different since kids shows are just a big ad for kids to bug their parents to buy them this or that. Thankfully I had a mom who knew exactly how to deal with me and I got some toys but not all the ones I wanted but still was very happy as a kid.
Been 5 years since I cut cable out of my life so that's pretty refreshing. Also I can't surf the net without an ad blocker cause if I do, which I tried on a virtual machine just for kicks, the amount of garbage trackers and other crap those ads put on your computer, no wonder ad blockers are the norm now. Hell even scammers use ads to scam people but you don't see advertisers rush to deal with that issue. If tomorrow I couldn't use any ad blockers anymore, chances are I'd just go outside and touch grass more and stop surfing as much.

Ads were regulated on the TV to not be allowed to exceed some decible threshold, _because_ ads then would maliciously make their volume twice as loud as the show you were watching, _because_ people would get up and walk away during commercials, _because_ people *don't want to be advertised to.*
Ads on the internet need to hindered and regulated, they are out of control. Actively preventing you from doing the thing you are trying to do should be a digital crime.

Early experience as a child taught me the unfortunate lesson that tv style adverts were likely a few minutes of being lied to to part you from cash or influence... I've gone out of my way to stop them from influencing me. Word of mouth, related experiences, even what I see on a shelf and the such, play a far more important role for me, Pros and Cons, with a dash of research if it's required... Maybe that is just me🤷‍♀

I worked in the ad/ad tech industries for years. These beliefs are pervasive among even the non-executive crowd, many of them truly believe ads are a force for good and that we should all love brands. Privacy isn’t a consideration, they all just pretend it’s someone else’s problem.
Not everyone in the industry is like this, of course. Many use ad blockers and would qualify as “extremists”. Most of them just like making things you can see on the side of a bus or on TV.
Also when the guy says “digital” he means digital ads, aka surveillance capitalism.

I put up with the advertisements for years. I just considered it as a fair part of the deal. Then advertisers got too greedy. The onslaught of ads on youtube and other platforms became absurd. So I blocked all ads. The reality is that MBA toting weasels always shit on everything they touch. They exist only to try to chisel more profits while wrecking the product. Tracking consumers is just creepy and lame. Someone else uses my computer to watch something about folding diapers and checks out some holidays. Then I get bombarded with ads for diapers and holidays. Then you get seriously creepy stuff like mentioning something in a gmail then seeing targeted ads for whatever you mentioned. Some Google bot scanned your email to see what data they could sell to advertisers.
