The wild part is finding out that someone sho invented such immoral practices got the highest and most respected accolade - I dont think even Stephen hawking had the honour of receiving it. Im not surprised science rewarded the man though, people have done and continue to do some immoral stuff in the name of science

It was a different doctor who came up with the initial procedure and it was an American doctor who used ice picks to stab the brains of people for fun. The guy who came up with lobotomy made it clear that it was a last ditch effort, the ice pick guy was just insane.

A girl friend of mine had scoliosis when she was 11 and had to wear a plaster for more than a year then braces for two years, it was terrible but our classmates were supportive and no one ever bullied her, but I remember the pain she suffered every time her parents had to clean her skin under the plaster, poor girl!
My dad had a bad car/bike accident and he had a brace on his leg for years and because his ankle and leg were like mashed potato one bone was shorter than the other. So to fix it mum had to adjust it each day. He said it was sooo painful and I honestly feel sorry for someone going to that extent to be a bit taller.

I have severe scoliosis (which makes me very short) and you can get this surgery that's essentially an internal brace for your spine - the idea is they attach these sliding rods onto your spine, and increase the rod length over time/many years. Yes its painful, but It's significantly better/more medically advanced than the surgery I had to have, where they fuse your whole spine/vertebrae together with bone cement and keep it in place with rods and doozens of screws.
As a barista I can confirm blonde roast has a massive ammout of caffine in it, one shot of blonde roast has roughly the same ammout of caffine as two standard size red bulls.
So yeah, go carefull with that 😬
red bulls also don't have a lot of caffeine. an average 12 fl oz dark roast coffee has 140 mg of caffeine or something like that, red bull has 80

I had a friend in high school who had pretty bad scoliosis and had surgery to put a rod in her back. Her mother had the same procedure as well. It was neat seeing the x-rays from before and after!

One thing I'd like to point out is on the paper it said the snake was poisonous. If it was poisonous that is not the type of snake you want to get anti-venom from. Poisonous animals hurt you if you touch/eat them. Venomous animals (Like the snake they're looking for) hurt you when they bite you. Also as far as I'm aware there are no poisonous snakes.

I saw a "ripleys, believe it or not" episode where a girl did the limb lengthening, years ago, because she wanted to be a flight attendant and was too short by like 2 inches. So she did the limb lengthening and only after the recovery did the airline go "oh, you didn't have to go THAT far, if we knew you were that invested we'd have made an exception" :/

@@TheXppp1My guess is that I think part of it is because of how planes have the overhead compartments, where you store luggage on the plane on top of the seats. Maybe if someone needs help they have to reach up there. That could probably be one of other reasons though.

8:25 I have a friend who was born without bones in one of his legs, and his doctors said he would never be able to walk. Although he gets surgeries almost every summer he is able to walk around our campus and honestly very proud of him for being able to make it through all this. :)

@@The_Kirk_Lazarus He has steel plates and bones within his leg to allow it to support him, and his leg is a little bit shorter than his other so thats why he gets surgeries.

i’ve actually had the type of limb-lengthening surgery you talked about in this video before, but it wasn’t for cosmetic reasons. One of my legs is quite a bit shorter than the other and it really affected my balance and muscles in that leg so i had the bone lengthened which let the muscles relax too.

To answer your question regarding the snake episode, Steve and Roger became amateur snake hunters and planned to capture and sell snakes to make antivenom for money. Unfortunately, they failed at it and depleted all of Langley Falls hospital's antivenom inventory in the end. However, there's a fan theory that Roger was using the amateur snake hunter gimmick as an excuse to get recreationally high on antivenom at the hospitals.
Fun fact: As silly as him being in the sack with the snake is, that WAS a legitimate punishment in Roman times! They'd pick a dog, a viper, or a monkey to put you in the sack with it before throwing it into the water

I’ve heard of limb lengthening being used on a woman who has dwarfism. She had two leg lengthenings and one arm lengthen. She said it changed her life and she can now drive, open cupboards, grab items, open doors and windows, wash her hands, etc without any help. I think in those situations it could be a game changer for those who want that, but for people who just wanna be taller for self esteem reasons… idk man is it really worth the risks and months of recovery?

Properly made absinthe contains wormwood, however because it is distilled after the wormwood is added. The psychoactive compounds don't get distilled over, however the aromatic oils carrying a lot of the flavor do (it also doesn't bring over as many bitter components, making real absinthe less bitter than fake absinthe). From my understanding, this is how true absinthe has always been meant to be made. The oldest recipe I can find says to do so. People who make imitation absinthe where the wormwood is added after distillation have made psychoactive drinks if the wormwood concentration is too high, although it would also be intensely bitter, tasting more like Malort (which uses wormwood as well, but carries over much more of the harsh bitterness).

Love these reaction videos! Little snake-related fun fact. The snake in the picture is not a black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) but a red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) from Australia. That picture is probably one of the most misused snake pictures ever, I've seen that published in famous journals as a "black mamba picture" multiple times.

Yeah, easily in the top 5 most toxic venoms of the world. They hang out in trees and can hunt BIRDS, which get away if the venom doesn't drop them quickly...
What makes them dangerous to humans is that humans also like to climb trees for FRUITS and the like (including raiding bird nests for eggs in some cultures)... AND disturbing a mamba leads to a "fight for your life"... This is also why a majority of Black Mamba bites (in their natural territory) are on the upper body or face.
At the end of the day, they're still not particularly difficult to deal with. I still use my standard T-handled walking cane, rather than a specialized "snake hook" or other tool. When I started wrangling, those specialty tools were both prohibitively expensive, and damnably difficult to even find for sale...Walking Canes can be found almost anywhere, and even the medical grade (tested for weight, durable, warranteed) only cost $10 - $20 (US)... SO I don't have to worry so much if a cane gets borrowed/stolen, lost, or broken. It's readily replaceable... ;o)
Some people get single limb lengthening when one leg grows shorter than the other(around 5 cm) which causes a limp that damages your spine. I myself have gone through this procedure and its really does help for balancing out your tibia. Btw this is known as tibial hemimelia.

@@Diana-tt9dl It isn’t too bad since once you get the cast on you just have to do physical therapy to keep your leg growing and the main growth happens when you are asleep. As long your muscles are a little strong, at a young age it isn’t that bad. I am going to go through this procedure for the second time in a few months and now that I am older the therapy will be much harsher and will be very hard to go through physical therapy if you aren’t in good shape.
I am aware that you can heal from this and grow extra bone mass, what scares me for probably a non scientific reason is the bone density if you had a bad luck, and mostly bone quality, I don't know if bone quality is even a thing, but I can't help but think that the newly acquired bone mass could snap under pressure and intense training, I guess if someone would have done this then they must not take any chances and go crazy with all vitamins and calcium and minerals and whatnot and probably take growth hormone to ensure maximum density and not bottleneck type growth. its just a phobia in my mind lol @@Grap.07

I feel like the limb lengthening procedure could be useful for people who have uneven leg lengths since that can really badly effect people’s body’s (joints, hips, backs etc) over time. I don’t have uneven limbs but I did, when I was a kid, somehow do something where I was walking unevenly and it really impacted my knees, ankles, hips and even up to my neck. I had to get a bunch of chiropractic adjustments.
I know little people have it done sometimes, not just for aesthetics but for the chronic pain and to walk better.
I’ve also gotten a limb lengthening procedure in a hex frame it’s not the easiest thing to go through.

@Leapingriver no, the body will fix broken bones by filling in the gaps between the broken ends of the bones. So they use an external framework to hold the bone exactly a small distance apart in the correct alignment to have the bones fill in the gap just right that tou end up with longer bones. You wouldn't be able to do it if the patient had issues with healing, obviously, and the older you are generally the slower you heal. It probably would never be done on a child unless they really had to for the child's health.

As a person who used to have scoliosis, I find it interesting to hear that there are surgeries or anything like that for it
I have it slightly but nothing bad. One of my sisters though…. They want to operate but she’s put it off for years. She had to stop cheering her senior year as the pain was so bad- they said one of her ribs was rubbing on her spine. You can look at her back and see something is really wrong. One of her shoulder blades sticks wayyyyy out! She did physical therapy and it helped a bit but mostly she’s now a mom to 4 young boys and can’t be down and out like that. I wish she’d done it when she was still in high school or college.
I have a student (I teach 7th grade) that’s out right now because he had his operation for his scoliosis. We are sending work home with one of the teachers for her to teach him at his house until he can come back.

I probably had a slight one (it's been 2 years since I was confirmed I don't have scoliosis anymore) and even then, I was still growing when it was found out as outside of these last 2 years, I remember always having it. I just remember one doctor saying that my back is straighter than straight (a saying in Finland to say that something is very straight) and I haven't worried about it since. Sucks for your sister though that they couldn't continue something they were interested in
My sister must have had a very bad case, she had to get two Rods screwed into her spine to correct the scoliosis as well as years of braces
If the degree of curvature of the spine is 40degrees or more then usually surgery is recommended because as the person keeps growing the spine will continue to grow at the curve getting worse as you grow therefore the curvature will continue to get worse so it’s preferred to use surgery and/or braces. I was close to 40% and didn’t get the surgery & now I’m paying for it with a lot of pain. I wish I’d had the surgery when I was younger but I might still get it depending on how long I can stand the pain.

Dr. Mike, my friend was 4'8 and underwent limb lengthening surgery. being five feet tall was a game changer for her concerning driving, sitting in chairs, reaching countertops to cook on, and so much more. I think _that's_ where 'draconian' surgeries like this can be used for the betterment of somebody's life. officially, I will add, she's 5'1. so they managed just over two and half inches with her surgery. it was very painful, she will have some scarring where the pins were, but she's *ridiculously* happy.

It might even have lengthened her life. I have a few friends who are much shorter than average, and things like seat belts, airbags, and other safety equipment can become deadly if you aren't in the "normal" height range.
@@johnnycucumber I don't think lengthening your limbs would help the shoulder strap be in a better place. you can usually adjust the height of the shoulder belt to fit, even as low as 4 foot person can be safe. But to help you would need to lengthen their torso, which is probably much harder due to the spine. Not trying to be anti limb lengthening surgery or anything, just trying not to set up false expectations either. whether it's worth it or not is probably a very unique thing, each person gets a choice, and some are happy and other's aren't. Do a fair amount of research before doing this for yourself to maximize your odds of either doing it and being happy, or deciding not to and being happy.
I think his comment was more aimed at people are like 5 foot 5 inches+ who don’t really have major physical challenges due to their height and would want to be taller for social reasons. Its true that everyone has a physical trait that they think if it were magically improved would solve 90% of their problems when in reality, it wouldn’t actually change much. You just find another physical trait to obsess over and blame for all of your confidence and social issues. For people like this, therapy is the solution rather than physical surgery
i got an experimental treatment for my hip back then. doctor said either that while i'm still young or arthritis and an artificial hip with 35. 45 now and fit and happy, really glad i said yes.

My uncle got a job doing snake venom research, and he asked why the person before him left. He had snakes at home, and one night he got passed out drunk (he may have been an alcoholic) not realising the enclosure for his python was open. You guessed it, he got the squeeze.
Good thing my uncle doesn't drink alcohol.
I live about 8 miles from the Midwest medical serpentarium. They provide anti-venom to most midwestern hospitals, and have on hand breeding populations of all known venomous snakes. Back in 2012 the manager was bit by an actual Black Mamba while retrieving samples for testing, he spent nearly a month in the hospital and since it was his 5th bite from a Black Mamba was restricted from any further contact with venomous snakes due to the damage done in the 8 minutes he took to get him to the hospital and treated. Basically after 50 years as a hunter, collector and provider of medical supplies from the most dangerous animals and plants on earth his body was unable to take any more damage. The wonderful man passed in 2019 from lingering damage done by all those snake bites and his son now runs the organization.

what kind of python? and most deaths regarding large snakes are during handling, when the snake feels unsafe and tightens to make sure they don't fall. i doubt the snake would leave the enclosure and seek out the person to kill him! there's also only one record of a person ever being eaten by a large snake, and that was a reticulated python
@@snekkyboi Reticulated Python, who happen to grow between 4 and 9 meter (But, 9m was a record register 100 years ago). For such specimen, the enclosure is litterally a room only for him.

Having lived in Thailand for a year, the snake thing definitely resonates. The snake catchers are experts and know the type of snake immediately. They are already wearing gloves and proper shoes (most of the time!) and they learn how to do it from watching their parent who is also an expert.

Re: Scoliosis. There's so many different kinds of things to take into consideration. I was braced all through middle and high school and eventually had surgery in college, and the determining factor was because of the spine affecting my breathing, pain, headaches, and low self-esteem from body image issues. Aside from just curve, my spine was actually torquing, and that played a big part in the health decisions I made. I luckily had access to doctors that specialized in scoliosis, but I also met with doctors who clearly knew little about it along my health journey. I remember one doctor looking at my x-rays and saying he didn't think I should be having any pain. Um. Okay. Well. I Do (did). Spinal fusion ended up being great for me. some people see it as limiting, and it can be and is not for everyone every time for sure. And recovery was a long journey. But for me, compared to how limited I was before, it actually helped me to be more active, healthy, mobile, and independent ultimately.
A teacher I had in high school told us about how his daughter had had to undergo spinal fusion when she was in her early teens. She obviously didn't grow any taller afterward so she's still under 5ft but other than that I believe she had a decent recovery.
@@yaboicolleen It sounds like she *possibly* had a progressive condition or something. One of the reasons I didn't get fused until college was because my curvature growth was slow--and if possible they wanted to wait until I "stopped growing." That has got to be hard.
My nephew had the leg lengthening surgery done. One of his legs was growing faster than the other so dramatically it was creating a curve in his spine to develop. Just an example of it being used for beneficial purposes.

It actually doesn't. Thujone only has a mild stimulant effect and the amounts that are in absinthe are very small. The problem with absinthe is that some will drink it without watering it down correctly, and absinthe can have alcohol levels anywhere from 40-80% alcohol by volume. Also, past adulterated absinthes contained nasty chemicals like copper sulfate and ammonia.
Modern absinthe is pretty good if you like anise flavor, but just like any alcoholic beverage, please drink responsibly.

My sister had gnarly scoliosis that was treated from middle to maybe junior year in high school where she would wear her back brace (not a giant metal contraption like Steve’s, more plasticky slipped under the clothes) either all day or just at night. I’ve come to understand that it’s a somewhat rarer case in that the brace and no other treatment corrected the curvature of her spine. Edited for grammar.
They still do psychosurgery for mental illness. MassGen performs cingulotomies, tractotomies, and capsulotomies. A few other hospitals do as well.

With more than two decades of mental health treatment, dozens of medications tried, and hundreds of ECTs undergone since age 16, I was qualified. But my psychiatrist wouldn’t sign off on the idea, and I ultimately got a VNS implant instead.

I heard that the limb lengthening technique was originally used as an equalizing surgery. Basically, if your legs are dramatically different lengths, then they lengthen one to even them out and make things like walking and running more comfortable.
Yeah they were originally for those born with various skeletal issues. Then it was hijacked by a spoiled teenage girl with rich parents (i rememberwatching the documentaryabout the girl many yrs ago.) Then it became something people do for pure cosmetic reasons. But that happens a lot with cosmetic surgeries.
Yes. Even procedures seen as purely cosmetic these days were originally developed as treatments. Breast reduction was developed to help those with overly large breasts that caused back issues. Then breast augmentation was developed for those who suffered from breast cancer and had their breasts removed due to it. Nose jobs were for those who had traumatic facial injuries.

My surgeon was so sweet he asked me what was my favorite music to listen to and I told him my favorite band and when I woke up he thanked me for introducing him to the band because during the surgery he told the nurse to save it on his playlist
I did a report on snake bites where I talked to our local hospital staff about what to do - they said one of the most common bad ideas they see is people trying to bring the snake in so doctors can identify it. 1) if you have someone with you that can get a picture that is just as good, and 2) they do have anti-venom that works no matter what kind of snake it was. Don’t put yourself or others in more risk by trying to bring the snake with you or getting a good picture: just get away from the snake and get medical attention.
I would have thought they would note down all the information you have and get a herpetologist on the phone to help with identification if necessary. Even details like the location, time of day, habitat where the snake was found would presumably help as different species are likely to hang out or be active during different conditions and in different places.
There are no universal antivenoms. Some of them work for multiple different types of venoms, but none exists that work for all, or even anywhere close.
You need to have at least a rough idea what type of snake it was, so you can give one or more antivenoms that you estimate to be the most likely.
The rough location of the snake is probably enough in most cases.

I like how the snake clip had other things wrong with it yet Dr. Mike only talked about the medical stuff. I excepted nothing less 🤣However, my 2 comments:
1. If wilderness shows have taught me anything, it’s that if you’re gonna grab a snake, grab it by the back of the head because you want to control the dangerous part
2. Roger’s paper said, “definitely poisonous.” Food, beverages and things you ingest (orally, dermally, etc) are poisonous; snakes, spiders and other animals that bites you are venomous. There’s a difference!
Also, absinthe isn’t the only alcoholic beverage made with wormwood. Vermouth is also made with it, the name vermouth comes from the German pronunciation of wormwood “wermut” (pronounced vair-moot)
Tbh I never seen this episode so I assumed the snake was poisonous and it's bites weren't actually harmful and instead it's bright colors indicated that it's skin was covered in a poisonous mucus like poisonous tree dart frogs.
Rule #1, if u can't positively identify the snake and know for sure it's not venomous then just leave it alone! And there is no snake that has poison covering its body like a dart frog (I believe the frog secretes from glands but I could b wrong)... bright colors doesn't mean anything, there r 4 venomous species n the US, and only 1 of the 4 has bright colors, the coral snake... plenty of harmless snakes have bright colors, ground snakes, smooth/rough green snakes, ring neck snakes, San Francisco garter snakes etc... only way to really know if a snake is venomous or not is to learn about the different species
grabbing a snake that way isn't foolproof, you can still get envenomated! (sorry if it's spelt wrong, haven't written it much recently). there have been accounts of snakes poking their fang through the bottom of their mouth to get the person's hand! best advice is leave it alone unless ABSOLUTELY necessary, in which case you'd have to be a professional either harvesting for antivenin or relocating! I'd also like to add that snakes won't keep jumping at you like that and wasting their venom, they'll bite once and try to get away and might bite more until you let go if you didn't let go after that first bite. they wouldn't keep biting if you dropped them, and definitely wouldn't lunge their whole body off the ground to bite 😂

@@e-reptiledysfunction2243there are actually poisonous snakes. Some garder snakes that eat newts have a patch on their neck to secrete toxins. And Rhabdophis keelback snakes are both venomous and poisonous at the same time

12:13 I have scoliosis and have to wear a medical corset because of it, I have to use it even when I sleep, and that’s basically how it feels
I really should wear mine more, my doc is gonna hate me on my next appointment. I have mild scoliosis and moderate kyphosis and a lot of my joints are hypermobile so some hurt with a sharp pain when I wear my brace so that’s why I avoided it.

A coworker of mine was married to a Psychiatrist in the 1970’s. He committed her and had her receive a lobotomy. Then divorced her. My buddy wanted to do harm to him. She was committed to full time care for life.

Hey Doctor Mike! I wanted to say a big thank you for touching on atelectasis when it comes to wearing a back brace! I wore a brace for most of my childhood, and difficultly breathing is the biggest thing I remember from it. I ended up having to have surgery once it reached 93 degrees, and I wish it had been an option earlier just so I wouldn't have had to fight for breath as often. A lot of people don't realize everything that is involved with scoliosis, and if there aren't any visible signs it can get a little repetitive explaining why you're out of breath even when you're in shape. A little knowledge goes a long way, and I really appreciate you putting it out there!

There was a van driver from my work who owned a rattlesnake farm. He would milk the venom and give it to the county for handling to medical labs for the anti-venom.
