I reacted to Family Guy medical scenes a couple of years ago and you all seemed to enjoy it, so today I decided to react to some more! Today we talk about dog bites, breaking your neck by doing stunts designed for professionals, Stewie's plastic surgery and whether we should give botox to babies, suppositories, liver damage from drinking alcohol, cancer, giving doctor's tips, Stewie taking steroids, and Peter fighting the Chicken!

the "TicktackToe" is called "cross hatch" a common shading method, and it was used in comics to depict bruising or small lacerations when realistic wounds would not be acceptable under the comic book codes of the day. It has become a stylisitic holdover from that time, and is an easy way to depict a minor injury that is easy to replicate on animation cells.

I had a lactation consultant primarily diagnose me, and suggest a treatment plan. I went to my doctor and he said, “I’ve never heard of that, I’ll be right back.”
And he looked it up in some medical journals, printed out the pages for me, highlighted them, and said, “Well, I had never heard of this, but yeah, it’s a thing. And the medication she suggested could work. If you’re comfortable trying it, I’m comfortable with it.”
I LOVED that doctor. He was patient, he was humble, he listened to me, he explained the medication… he was a Godsend. And several months later when I saw him suffering with postpartum depression, he was so gentle, and walked me through treatment options, and strongly suggested therapy in addition to medication. Loved. Loved. Loved him.

The tic-tac-toe squares at 7:12 are callled cross-hatching, it’s an art technique to denote shading/bruising leftover from when cartoons were hand drawn with ink and paint to save time and money before digital art.

There is a medical TV show that is on it's last season this year, which would be great for you to review next it is called Doc Martin, it's a British comedy drama, he was a vascular surgeon, but becomes a GP (family medicine Doctor same as you), the show is medically accurate, and to top it off it is hilarious.

I’m an Engineer, all of our tests in college are open book. We are taught to look everything up. The codes and standards we work from change every two to four years, and we look things up so we are using the latest knowledge. And the materials available change constantly. I’d be disappointed if MDs were not looking things up.
SO... Engineer's School teaches you to read...
NOT "how" to read, but to actively build the habit and BOTHER to read. ;o)
I wish Law School understood it too. They expect us to remember case-laws (names, facts, judgements, years), all the titles of Acts and codes along with their dates and then their provisions along with their section, article or rule numbers. Laws also keep getting updated and ammended, new laws are made regularly, important judgements keep coming. And of course we need to understand the all of it and be able to apply it in situations where needed and yet they expect us to remember all of it. There's no point to it. It's stupid. In my career I will always be able to just look it up but in exams, we have to remember it all. Even application questions are more or less about remembering this stuff only because once we analyse the situation and recognise which laws will be relevant, we have to support our answers with legal provisions and case-laws.
@@gnarthdarkanen7464 I'd say it also teaches you how to read. Not how to read letters and words and sentences, but to read and comprehend a text, filter out the important information, and cross-reference with other texts on the matter.
@@Gaehhn Maybe... At the same time, much of what you just described comes with simple practice... mountains of the stuff if you try by your own devices, but it'll come.
There are reasons I keep getting to help design things or do my own spec's even though I'm a high school grad'... I get second opinions on a lot (especially "mission critical" components) BUT most of the time I just get told my math passes muster. (Other than a propensity to over-engineer everything.) ;o)
From what I know and what Mike has said they search up videos on the Internet to review sometimes before stuff like surgery just to refresh the brain, it seems they search things up pretty often.

i love that you mentioned testosterone rage,i work at a T clinic and i can definitely tell when my patients doses need to be adjusted, sometimes they're dose is too high and they complain they're going through puberty again or they're dose is too low and they're still tired or moody.

@@ravenID429 So many :) most are similiar in structure to test or mimic it, some are peptides. I’d recommend checking out some people who know way more than me, mpmd, Zack telendar, even Dr. Mike Israetel. But short awnser is all of them
6:31 yep, definitely immediate attention needed. My dad had one he ignored, and we were unaware of, until the rupture stretched more and he had to call an ambulance. They said the hole was about the size of grapefruit I think. It put him into shock and his organs started failing, it was really bad.

I cant stand that advice, you should ALWAYS google and research your symptoms, it could literally save your life. About 80% of the time i have come to the same conclusion as my doctor before i have even seen him.
You can google, just don't act like you are capable of correctly diagnosing yourself if you're not
A doctor has the medical knowledge and expertise necessary to process, fact-check and analyse information presented by books or the internet, which they can use to increase their quality of care for patients. That is very different from diagnosing yourself with cancer out of thin air after googling about your coughs. It's fine to search up your symptoms, who knows, maybe it can save your life, but it preferably shouldn't act as a substitute for diagnosis. Leave that part to your doctor.
Well they have much more knowledge and can diagnose with a higher accuracy than the average person

Glad you included some education on botox because so many people believe it's only for wrinkles.
I get botox injections for dystonia. It's a painful procedure but it does help for 3 months at a time.
For those that don't know- dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contactions, movements, postures and sometimes tremors.
I always find it surprising how little people know about movement disorders despite how common they are. Botox is such an amazing treatment, I wish there were generics available though. It's never great when a single company makes all of a medication.
@@Peranolde Botox is just one brand of botulinum toxin type A. I know there are at least 3 brands because my insurance covers 3 brands. Which of those brands they cover depends on the condition being treated and age of the patient. Maybe not all insurance companies do it that way but mine does. There is no way I would be able to afford botox without insurance coverage.
I also don't understand why there is such little awareness of the various movement disorders (other then parkinsons) when they are so common.
Dystonia is not a country.
My nephew gets Botox in his legs every 3 months due to issues with muscle tightness and it helps him massively. People are usually shocked when I mention it, it's amazing how little people know about it considering most people are aware of it if that makes sense.

They are aware botox exists but really have very minimal knowledge about it. I relate to dealing with that.
When friends comment about my getting botox for dystonia I remind them the options are muscle relaxants and pain killers or botox injections. Then I tell them I personally prefer botox over taking pills that could cause an addiction.
Anyway, I'm glad your nephew is doing well and hope he continues doing well. Movement issues are hard.

I love the show but a lot of the scenes are pretty brutal and there is no way a lot of the characters would have realistically recovered as quickly as they did.

I've gotten better about it but I swear when I was a kid, I had to run away from anyone throwing up. Usually I had to run to another bathroom so I could throw up too. My sister has panic attacks when she hears/sees someone throw up. I throw up kind of a lot. So, that's fun.

I would like to just say that @5:08 he means a personal trainer not an athletic trainer. A certified athletic trainer is a health care professional that can prevent, evaluate, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate a whole array of orthopedic illnesses and injuries!

7:05 it's called "cross hatching" and is an old comic strip trick to quickly and easily illustrate bruising or dirt.
I definitely agree that it can be a good thing if the doctor looks things up, because it means that they're making sure their knowledge is up to date, instead of relying on information that may either be outdated, or incorrect due to faulty memory. However, if your doctor does need to look something up, I don't think you want to be hearing that their citation came from Wikipedia. Nothing really against Wikipedia, but I've always felt it's more of a starting point for getting research off on the right foot, rather than to be used as your only, or primary source of information.
Yeah the benefit of having a doctor look something up is that they know exactly how to research and find very specific information, as well as having the literacy to understand what they’re coming across
If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Mike mentioned that he, as a doctor, maintains subscriptions to certain services and sites that provide up-to-date peer-reviewed articles and the like.
One of my heart issues is rare enough that a lot of medical professionals don't even know what it IS without quickly looking it up and I appreciate when they do just to be sure they know what they're looking for in an ECG
@Nathaniel Shrock The main problem is that anybody can edit Wikipedia articles, and while I believe some of it is checked, the fact that it can be edited by anybody means it can be edited by people who have no idea what they're talking about. Which is why it should only be used as a starting point, such as to quickly find citations to more reliable information sources, or to find tidbits of information that may make it easier to look that information up elsewhere. It's a good site, but shouldn't be a person's primary source of information. Even whenever I cite something I read there to people, I specifically state that it was something I read on Wikipedia so they know to maybe take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.
Doctors have their own internal database. Most people think that they're using Google or Wikipedia.

I've always wanted to speak Russian, and in the army had the chance to go to a small language school for Russian, however was not able to complete it due to mission requirements pulling me out of the military class; then came medical review board, offered retirement which I accepted. I never had the chance to finish and only remember a few phrases and words I can pick up on when hearing it. So yes I'm interested. My Aunt speaks it fluently but lives to far to teach me.... this is great....

Just had a hernia incarceration earlier this year while I was at work. Most intense pain I've ever been in. Didn't even know they were a thing at that point. Within a couple minutes of getting the results of my scans in at the hospital they had me heading into surgery. On the plus side they repaired the hernia that I hadn't even known I had while they were digging around in there to make sure my bowels were fine.
I have a question. When the doctor tells the dog to stop drinking, was he talking about alcohol or drinking in general?

I have never in my life been annoyed when a doctor looked something up. I have, however, on several occasions been _highly_ annoyed when a doctor _refused_ to look stuff up. In one case I even brought in printouts including URLs and made a double appointment in order to give them time to look through the material I brought and he _still_ refused to look at it. I never went back to that doctor but I wish his license to practice would be revoked.

The Tic-Tac-Toe grid used for the facial injuries is an art technique called crosshatching, and it's just an easy way to show scuff marks or dirt without having to be extremely detailed. Comics and cartoons have been using it for decades because it's such a simple yet effective technique.

I got to educate my sons primary on his ARFID diagnosis from his specialist. It was pretty cool. Luckily she has no problem admiting she doesn't know something and will listen and look it up with us and learn. Shes the best. Shes the only doctor my autistic son doesn't immediately shut down and flip out with. Shes seen him since birth and has taken the time to build a relationship with him.

I’m a few months late to this but it was interesting to hear about the hernia and about strangulation in particular. I had a strangulated hernia when I was 15 and I didn’t know it was the smaller hernias that could cause more obstruction

My dad had multiple hernias that he just kept "pushing back in" for around 18 MONTHS. I don't know how or if that was really that healthy. He DID get the surgery for it finally and when asked why he didn't do it sooner he'd reply with, "Waiting for insurance to come through." or "I'm busy.".
at 2:31 it reminds me of when I was in the hospital and my doctor straight up said "give me a minute I'm going to go look it up to make sure my suspicions are correct"

My dad, who is the family it specialist (though i might know more than him in a few areas now lol) highlighted the same logic as Mike mentions here. Cant remember everything, the real skill is being able to find the info you need, knowing what you need to look for, and understanding the results you find.

Hey Mike, little correction: incarceration of a hernia is a complication yes but it is not yet an emergency until it becomes estrangulated where intestines ischemia can happen and in the long run necrosis followed by peritonitis (septic shock)
Botox for migraines is a godsend! I went from 4 migraines a month to 2-4 a year.

i already love this video, not only is the doctor's reaction funny but he is also explaining that some stunts are not safe to do at home, how to fix injuries, etc. Should 100% react to injuries from other adult cartoons, i think Rick and Morty or South Park age great if they have some injuries in them.
HELL YEAH BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Funny story about Botox. I get it for chronic migraines, and it’s injected all around my neck, head, and part of my face. So I can’t really lift my eyebrows very much. Last year I nearly died from the virus that must not be named, and when I came off of the ventilator, I couldn’t move anything except my right arm and hand. (Fun fact, hypoxia can cause temporary paralysis.) I was afraid that I had had a stroke, so the nurses asked me to smile, raise my eyebrows, etc. to see if I had any facial symptoms of a stroke. When my eyebrows didn’t move, they started freaking out. I had to explain that this was normal for me. Neuro sent me for an mri anyway, because of the paralysis. It came back fine, and I spent the next several months slowly regaining my mobility . . . Only to have a massive pulmonary embolism and a severe hemorrhagic stroke in February of this year. This time I couldn’t speak, read, or write when I finally regained consciousness. I was also paralyzed. But I have slowly regained my speech and communication skills, and I am gradually regaining my mobility again.
Ouch, that sounds awful. I hope you are doing better now, I just heard somewhere how long blood clotting behaviour can be off after going through something like you did, so I hope it won't happen again🍀

@@ulhi7564 I will be on blood thinners for the rest of my life and now have a filter to prevent clots from traveling up from my legs. And, yes, I am still wrinkle free, lol. I started the botox seven years ago when I was 25, and I was always told that I have a "young face" to begin with. I spent nearly seven months in the hospital this year, and had many nurses and techs who thought I was much younger than I am. Having smooth skin is probably the only good thing to ever come out of my migraines.
Dr. Mike, I'm not a doctor but, I respect you for addressing the issue where the doctor also looks things up. For me personally, that's a more trustworthy doctor than someone who misdiagnoses or is not sure about his diagnosis. I'm 100% with you on humans can not maintain all information all the time.

"We can't maintain all of the information in our minds!" amen...I'm in IT and it's the same, I can't imagine how you'd ever keep up with everything or remember everything that could possibly come up randomly. People expect IT to know how to use 500 completely different pieces of software and instantly rebuild any hardware and then are surprised we have to look anything up (or just say no).

I actually witnessed a doctor being tipped, although in this case it was quite sweet. I work ina psychiatric hospital, and one patient with both schizophrenia and autism had a medical checkup. Afterwards he asked me to pass on a cake to the doctor

I guess its used to represent that during a rough task the fibre of the clothes gets stranded so all the weaving started appearing up.
But yeah its mostly the illustrator wanting to show bruises and that criss cross is the most lazy yet effective way to show the darkened area that doesn't look largely unnatural in shape and color

I got a medical question Dr. Mike, we always hear about steroids being used by bodybuilders. But are there any legitimate medical reasons for use of anabolic steroids?
Hormone replacement and therapy are my best guess.
Anabolic-androgynic steroids aren't really used medically anymore because better/safer options exist, but they have been used for several applications related to blood-cell conditions (ie, anemia), wasting diseases (muscle loss, and loss of appetite), bone loss (osteoporosis), hormone replacement (either you've got a condition where you have a lack of production/producing the wrong hormones or you're getting older and want to feel a bit younger again), inflammation (swelling and tenderness), and gender dysphoria.
It's probably safe to assume that one of the side effects allowed for it to be used to combat conditions that produce that issue.
Corticosteroids.

I know I took steroids when I had a really bad case of poison ivy but don't know what type of steroids.
I know they have to give steroids to babies if they are born before there lungs are ready and the steroids help develop their lungs
