- I never realized how many medical scenes were in Parks and Rec, but after so many of your recommendations I decided to give it a look! Turns out there was a wide variety of things for us to discuss, such as Ron Swanson getting shot, Ron Swanson getting strep throat, Ron Swanson suffering from a hernia, Leslie Knope getting the flu, Jerry having a fart attack, Andy and April going in for doctor's appointments, MRI's with Will Arnet of Smartless and Arrested Development, Rashida Jones being upset about people putting their mouths over water fountains, Ben Wyatt's kidney stones, and Rob Lowe's food poisoning. Fun fact about the: "connection connectivity problems". It was improvised line by pratt and the writers hated it because they considered it to be one funniest lines of the whole show and they didn't write it.

iirc the writers had a sort of rivalry with chris because he kept improvising gold jokes that were much better than what was on the script

One of the best tv shows ever made. The whole visit with Andy is fantastic. Chris Pratt pre-Marvel is incredible. Different style of comedy with him being a supporting actor and kind of a bumbling funny guy. He did it well.
He's still great as Starlord.
It makes me wonder if he was always like the way he is now or if the Marvel stardom got to him 🙃

Ron has sawdust in his ear because he is woodworker in his free time. He makes someone a canoe as a thank you gift at some point in the series. That is also why Ron complains about the type of wood that the tongue depressor is made of.
Ann is a nurse, she finds out that Ron has never eaten a fruit or vegetable and that he hasn't been to a doctor in years, so she makes him go to the hospital to have a bunch of tests done. The result is that Ron is actually really healthy, except that he has low potassium and should probably eat a banana every so often. Ann tells Ron to do it for Ron's wife and kids, so this is Ron trying to remember his family and force that banana down his throat.
Why would it be disposable, just toss it in the autoclave
@@ozzymand1as Because wood doesn't work that way. An autoclave is great if there's no place for organisms to hide on a surface (ie, scalpels, surgical instruments, dental instruments) but wood has a lot of nooks and crannies, plus is easier to replace than a $45 piece of equipment. There's actually quite a number of objects that you don't reuse, mostly to prevent the spread of infections.
@Danielle Miller hmm, that's fair. But why not make the depressor out of metal or plastic, then it could be autoclaved and reused. It just seems like an unnecessary waste
@@ozzymand1as Because then it needs regular cleaning and can only be used on a singular patient between cleanings. Metal tongue depressors do exist, and if you had tons of them and cleaned them all at once then it would be more efficient I suppose. Keep in mind that tongue depressors manufactured for medical use are government regulated by the FDA. Aside from being more expensive though, metal tongue depressors have even more manufacturing regulations because they are intended to be re-used. Wooden, single-use tongue depressors (which are often labeled as craft sticks) are far-less regulated by the FDA, thus making them even more cheap.

When he said "Ladies, ladies" while trying to eat the banana, it reminded me of a friend. He was around 50, and he had an intense phobia toward putting anything remotely phallic into his mouth. He told me, this fear dated back to when he was a child. (I shiver to think what may have happened to him as a child to make him develop such a phobia.) He had never in his life eaten a candy bar or granola bar, refused to drink beer from a bottle, would cut up burritos, always gave me his bread sticks, and could not eat a banana unless it was cut into pieces and he could use a fork. He was fine seeing others eat that sort of food, he wasn't homophobic (thankfully) but trying to eat or drink anything he perceived to be "phallic" would make him gag and sweat. When we first met, I used to tease him about being "posh" for insisting on a glass for his bottles of beer, but after he explained that phobia and I realized what may have happened to him in the past (I never pried, it wasn't my place to ask) I made sure he ALWAYS had a chilled glass for his beers, and I was happy to eat his bread sticks.
Well, he's struggling because he only eats meat, so the banana (or any other fruit or vegetable) it's a problem, but interesting story, I guess.
He's saying "Ladies, Ladies" because Dr. Mike cut out the part where Anne told Ron to do it for Diane and the kids (her 2 girls). So, he is psyching himself up by reminding himself why he's doing it.
Admit it, you were nice to him only for the bread sticks 😛

"Why is everyone sick?" Doc, the point is that you're reacting to the scenes when they're sick. In the majority of episodes, everyone is healthy.
Healthy is relative. In the show universe, everyone in Pawnee is in horrible physical health.

The first time I watched that "network connectivity problems" line, I laughed for about 30 seconds straight. And Chris Pratt actually improvised the line. The writers later expressed annoyance that he was the one who came up with the funniest line of the episode.
Funny Elementary school medical story here: my daughter's elementary school was very strict about sending kids home, if they are even the least bit sick. One day my daughter had a spot under her lips with 2 zits ( yes she was already having a bit of acne because of early puberty). The school called me to pick her up saying " your daughter has an oral infection, possibly impetigo. She needs to get a note from her doctor saying she's on antibiotics before she can return to class." She was in 2nd grade. When I saw my daughter, I said, " are you people serious? This is just a couple zits. If you send kids home for zits, over half the teenagers are gonna have to go home too." Nurse says, " Mam' your daughter is too young for acne. This is an oral infection, probably impetigo." I said, " No, mam'. She is not too young for acne. She had her 1st period 6 months ago and gets zits like this here and there. It's a hormonal issue, not a bacteria issue." Nurse says,
" That's impossible mam'. Please go to your doctor, and they will explain it all to you and get her on antibiotics." So I took her to a pediatrician, and big surprise...the doctor agreed with me. They were just normal zits caused by hormones from puberty. He wrote us a note explaining that Abby had acne and was not contagious to other students. She was free to return to class. I loved the loved the look on the nurses face the next day as she was reading that note. Lol
That is very early puberty. Nine is usually the low, low end of puberty start --and not super common. Of course, if this is typical in your family--it may not be an issue. But it is not normal for the average population. I hope you had her checked--early puberty can be caused by so many fixable things. In 2nd grade, your daughter would have been 7...that is so early.
Same thing happened to my son in second grade. His was a Cold Sore. He got Cold Sores pretty regularly in Elementary School, they're only occasional now that he's gotten older. The Elementary School called me, absolutely adamant that it was Impetigo. I'm like "He's had Impetigo, I know what it looks like, that's not Impetigo." "Gotta have a doctors note, no coming back until he does." The Pediatrician asked me what I thought the school wanted by sending my son to the doctor, I was like "For me to get mad and home school, probably." 😆

My grandmother worked in childcare for most of my tween and teen years. I hardly ever get sick now.

I LOVE THIS SHOW! One of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately a lot of the jokes are lost on you because you don't know the characters. Ron is a woodworker and a wood expert - thus woodchips. He also mainly only eats meat. So, the banana is a problem for him. Please watch the show. You wont regret it!

I think a lot of the jokes need context. Like he didn’t get the sawdust in ear thing, or the banana, because he doesn’t know Ron. I love the show, and wish I could sit with dr. Mike and explain why this scenes are 100x funnier thank he thinks

With regards to the heart attack thing, I was told by a nurse that heart attack symptoms are different for women and that most of the information we have about symptoms that is widely known is based on research done on men.
On the AHA website it does mention that. We learn about it in nursing school as well. Nurses are the ones seeing patients the majority of the day while the doc just drops by so definitely listen to your nurses :]

It's true, so many women die because they just feel overwhelmingly "wrong" and "tired" and decide to go to bed rather than "overreacting"
Add that to long hospital wait times discouraging people from going to the ER, and it's a serious issue.
Sadly a lot of medicinal research is based on boys and men. It's one of the reasons many girls and women get diagnosed really late with for example autism and adhd.

I love how he can be serious and funny at the same time.
I had a tiny kidney stone once; or at least, I'm quite sure I did. It was over in an instant, but I felt an incredibly sharp sensation travel through my urethra. The pain was intense to the point my knees buckled afterwards, and I ended up pissing everywhere. I believe it was just the right size to not get stuck, but still big enough to "fill" the urethra.
It was less than a second of the actual pain, but it was definitely the worst pain I've ever felt.
I know he's a medical doctor, so it's literally his job, that the vast majority of people in the world are not able to do...but it's still super impressive how he can diagnos and present possible diagnosis, off the top of his head, is amazing.
And I love how happy he gets when the show proves him right.

9:22 : You ask why he was admitted into the hospital for STREP. When I was in 2nd grade I had an incredible stomach ache so bad I couldn't move, and my teacher sent me to the nurse. After examining my throat, concluding that I did not have a stomach bug and that they did not know what was wrong, they called my father to pick me up from school and go home to rest. My father instead took me to the emergency room which turned out to be the correct choice because once the doctor examined me he found I had STREP originating from the stomach, which in my case you could not see from the throat like normal STREP. I think if I did not go to the hospital that day and not had been prescribed penicillin (which my sibling is allergic to) things would have gone much differently. But this was a unique case and you may be right in the show's circumstances haha.

I used to be a tree trimmer. Sawdust in your ear isn't crazy. Lost hearing in one ear for a whole two weeks. Problem solved itself, but that's how much sawdust we got. When I was doing that it wouldn't have been weird for a doctor to have been able to blow sawdust out of my ear. Any given day, it was there.

Tooth extraction over root canal is often a cost issue. I've had 4 teeth extracted, each one costing me about $100. I've had two root canals, $1000 each WITHOUT the crown to go over it. When insurance companies treat teeth as "luxury bones" we have to make financial decisions accordingly.

I suffer from chronic migraines, and I also got a mild concussion when I was a child. I had to get an MRI as a result of said concussion. All I remember, is closing my eyes for a period of time in a small tube, and there was a lot of noise. After it was finished, everyone was congratulating me for being so brave. I just thought "WTF?? Really?? I was just laying there not moving, how am I brave?????

This is LITERALLY my two favorite things to watch, in the world, coming together. This is awesome!
I just love how Dr. Mike always thinks ahead when he talks about what he would say in certain situations.
Like the doctor in the show said “It’s nothing too bad, so I wouldn’t worry about it”, while Dr. Mike said “It’s nothing too bad right now, but here’s some things to look out for”

What would you think of doing a Bob's Burgers medical episode? Between Teddy's stuntman camp, that episode where Bob cut his finger open playing rock, paper, scissors, and all of Dr. Yap's shenanigans, it could be a pretty entertaining episode!
My CRAZIEST Doctor Story:
I have Ehlers Danlos so I’ve seen a lot of specialists. The medicines (fentanyl and dilaudid) I was on were causing my body to have extreme tremors, but at the time we didn’t know the cause. After a brain scan to check for any tumors, I was sent to a neurologist. Mind you, I’m on the strongest narcotics you can possibly be on! She told me the best way to stop the tremors was to start drinking alcohol. I was 19 and my Mom was with me which I’m so glad for because nobody would believe this story if I didn’t have a witness.
This reminds me of a Grey's Anatomy episode where a girl had undiagnosed Ehlers Danlos, and she was self medicating with alcohol.

I’m one of the lucky few success stories. Off all narcotics, have my BA, and work full time. Still, so many people suffer greatly from ED and educating the public can greatly help people get diagnosed.

The fact that the mri tech says Leslie has an industrial sized oven and then she has triplets is so funny to me
I'm an MRI technician (well, soon to be out of college MRI technician, but that doesn't sounds as good), the frame the guy puts on Leslie (I'm pretty sure they're called coils in English) is only for head scans. Those things kinda work as antennae to recieve the signals your body puts out. He got a full body scan of Leslie without strapping her into like 10 different coils for every body part (head, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, etc).
And that image kinda looks like a PET scan to me, not an MRI.
BTW, MRIs are fascinating machines. Using high strength magnets (which are produced using superconductors and liquid helium) we cause the hydrogen atoms in your body to align a certain way, then, using radio waves, we cause the atoms to weer off their alignment and start spinning around, this gives off radio signals that the machine uses to make an image. You could kinda compare it to a guitar, where the hydrogen atoms become the strings that are plucked with radio waves.

I had a hernia in my abdomen last November. I thought I had food poisoning because I was throwing up. Turns out it's because my intestines were getting pinched off. I waited a couple of days because I was feeling better each day. Glad my supervisor talked me into going into the ER. I was thinking about it, though I should've that day honestly.
I've had 12 kidney stones. They hurt so bad, multiple times I'd black out and end up in the hospital with no idea how I got there. 🙃
As an 11 year old child, the doctors all told me "those energy drinks will do that to ya" and "don't drink so much soda."
Nobody told me "Hey, beets are REALLY FRICKIN HIGH in oxalates, so STAY THE FRICK-FRACK AWAY FROM THEM"

Regardless, my issue was too many of certain kinds of veggies, particularly beets. I don't know why doctors focus so much on the soda and energy drinks that they don't even mention stuff like beets.

strangely i find MRIs calming. doesn't take much to ignore the giant hum as background noise and even though i have mild claustrophobia, it felt more like a sleeping bag than a coffin.

I had a kidney stone. Went to the ER (I thought I might actually be dying which is the only time I'll go to the ER). Did some tests. It came back as a "rather small stone". I said, "Are you sure? It feels like the size of Montana."
Apparently, that's a very common observation.

I’d just like to say thank you. I was at a party with my team, and one of my friends was feeling sick and vomiting. His face was turning red, and I remembered that this was a sign of Anaphylaxis FROM THIS VIDEO. He got to the ER and was saved, but was told he had cut it close. He may have died without your help. Keep doing CZcams, you are really helping change lives.

As someone that suffers with pretty severe anxiety I always get pretty stressed out to read the symptoms of a heart attack, as they’re almost identical to what I feel when having a bad anxiety attack. Constantly wondering if I’m going to one day ignore a heart attack because I think it’s something more run of the mill.
“Kids are Petri dishes” reminded me as a kid whenever I’d get sick, my dad would ask me where I got sick from. My answer was always “How should I know? I go to school, it’s a germ factory!”
Doc, the food poisoning advice for avoiding the 'motility' drugs is spot on. I got GI issues at least once a month due my college cafeteria (don't trust hippies in the commissary), and I just had to let it flow.... EVERY TIME. Those hippies still owe me some tuition!!!

Hey Dr. Mike, I was hoping you could do an extensive video covering all the kinds of herpes, myths vs facts, how one can catch them, the rates of transmissions between different types of genitalia/skin, the current suspected global infection rate, and how to (learn to) live and love with them, etc. My family doctor told me it's virtually impossible to test for it unless you have an active outbreak they can swab, and by then it's already too late. This leads me to suspect that actual infections are much, much higher.
I caught HSV2G from abuse as a young teen, but didn't learn about it until last year in my late 20s. My family doctor informed me of the type over the phone, and that was it. No info or mental support tips etc. I've done my best to research the virus myself but several well reputed, international health authorities turned out to contradict each other, or had unsubstantiated info. Either way, everything I found has been incredibly disheartening, and I no longer feel truly attractive or positive about myself or even remotely hopeful of the feasibility of my life dreams (nuclear family + pets), despite well-informed sexual/romantic interest being shown in me as a person. I've watched TED Talks about living with it, reading books, joining support groups, a special dating site, but I just feel like right when I've become mentally ready to live my best life in all facets, this came to light and pulled the rug from under my joie de vivre.
Because of more than just the taboo, I am now too scared to go back into the dating pool, and am considering adopting cats for the rest of my life instead of finding a partner to create a family with. I've just been feeling lost since then.
Thank you for making sensitive medical topics so approachable and taking away lots of the uncertainties and spookiness, whilst also raising awareness and (re)educating where necessary.

I’m getting sores on my mouth like the one Mike has, about once a year or once every two years, but luckily my partner never judged me for it. To him it’s normal, some people have it, some don’t. I would love to see an extensive educational video about this topic on this channel.
The infections are most likely higher because you can get it from anything, not just sex yet people don’t know that and tend to ignore their symptoms.

I was going to make a similar comment asking for a video on this topic myself.
I have also found it very difficult to find good information on the topic and found doctor visits thoroughly unhelpful. But from what I have been able to discover about it many people are actually carriers, at least of HSV-1, it's just that for most people their immune system manages to keep it suppressed. I'm pretty sure I have HSV-1, having had oral outbreaks for about a decade now, but I have never had a test for it. Something I read a while back, and which does seem to corrolate with my experience, though it could also be due to changes in lifestyle (I've strived to be healthier to help boost my immune system, better sleeping pattern, more sunlight, long walks for excersise, eating better, etc.), is that as you get older your immune system learns to better suppress the virus, leading to less outbreaks or even none at all. When I first started getting outbreaks they used to happen 3/4 times a year, now I think my last outbreak was about 9 months ago, and it was nowhere near as severe as they once were.
Stress can lead to outbreaks, since stress affects your immune system. I became more introvertive after I first started getting outbreaks in my early 20s. And to my frustration, whenever I made plans to travel to go see friends I would quite often get an outbreak. I'm pretty sure that the stress and worry of getting an outbreak directly lead to getting the outbreak I was worried about.
I know that my situation is different to yours, but I hope it helps you feel a little less alone. There is absolutely a mental health aspect to to herpes, I have often felt depressed because of it. Certainly, I know for me there's an element of shame, which I know is rediculous, it's not like I have any control over it. Like you say, there is a taboo around the subject, and I think people find it hard to open up about it. I have resigned myself to the idea of a life without a relationship, not having been exactly super confident about interacting with women before getting outbreaks, but I was never all that interested in the idea of having the "nuclear family" anyway, so I think for me this was easier than it sounds like it is for you. I do have 4 dogs and 3 cats though, and 2 stray cats who live in my shed, they make things a little easier and I never feel alone. So I guess I have all the family I could wish for, even if it probably makes me seem a little mad ^^
Let us hope Dr. Mike sees this thread and does a video covering the topic, I think it would help a lot of people.
I can relate! Having had it for years and been in the dating pool, I have found some stigma but overall, being honest with your potential partners and being safe moving forward is the best bet. It's incredibly common, more common than you might think.

I'm pretty sure that like 90% of adults have oral herpes but many just don't develop the actual cold sore. Most of us get it as kids on the playground and it stays with us. Cold sores can then pop up throughout life due to a number of reasons like stress. Getting a cold sore is no big deal!

Haha I can relate to the tooth pulling clip. My fiance when we first moved in together..he hurt his toe at work and the nail was cracked and dying.
