If Gunther was around anytime before the 70s, no one would have batted an eye if he was called “Gunther Von Eric” and billed as the Von Eric’s cousin/Fritz’s cousin/brother.
There's was a wrestler like that who worked in that era, his name was Hans Schmidt and his gimmick was a German nationalist. He was so hated by fans that he turned Buddy Rogers into a face during a match.
When they tried to sneak in a fake brother it didn't work and kinda soured the fans on them.

He's the spitting image of a young Fritz, wish they had continued the Sami feud and had Gunther go overboard by bringing back the Iron Claw to get the belt back - then we could've had Gable avenge Sami at the PPV afterwards and become IC champion finally.

In fairness to when they originally called Gunther "Gunther Stark" there were quite a lot of Nazis in Europe in World War 2. So if you look up a common German or Austrian first name combined with a common German or Austrian surname, you're practically guaranteed to find someone with that name who served in the SS.

As an Austrian I am not offended by Sheamus joke try. Its not very creative, we heard and made jokes like that ourselves. We Austrians have developed a sense of self irony and humor. Thats important, so that people can tell us apart from Germans.

It was a fairly harmless joke. But maybe Gunther should avoid the SS General's overcoat. And yes, that's what it is. Designed by SS - Oberfuhrer (senior colonel) Karl Diebitsch. But without insignia, it's a nice coat.

@@chuckles9767, Nazi uniforms represent the old ideals of WW2 Germany. Basically the idea that there's a superior race and that it is their right to rule the world. Whether that be to gather resources from the surrounding lands (via conquering and ransacking other countries) or punishing those who opposed their ideal human (via severe discrimination and eventual genocides).
Current day US military uniform represent the ideals that the US are stated to believe (AKA defense of the US and their allies and the intervention of great injustice.
Wearing the uniform means you believe in the ideas. As the modern day finds racism unacceptable, wearing Nazi uniform is frowned upon.

All of the King/Queen of the ring matches have been decent so far.
Vinci actually has a German name and German is his mother-tongue, as he's from South-Tyrol which used to be a part of Austria until after WWI. And despite Italy trying to get people there to assimilate, most of it is still more like Austria than Italy.

Vinnci did have a German name originally with Imperium all through their NXT run as Fabian Aichner before ridiculous vince changed his name on NXT 2.0 and broke him up. Triple H brought him back with Imperium on main roster at Clash at the Castle but they should have revered him back to his old name to so it made sense.

Just as there seems to be some WW2 knowledge gaps:
The Kingdom of Italy was allied to Germany in WW2. Germany (with Austria) and Italy (and later Japan) were called Axis Powers, because it rooted from the term "Berlin-Rome-axis". The term was taken from a proclamation of the italian dictator Mussolini, that all european countries would rotate on the Berlin-Rome axis. The military alliance ItalyGermany lasted from 1939 to 1943.
In July '43 after the Allied Invasion of Sicily (an island in the Mediterranean Sea and politically a part of Italy), the italian King dismissed Mussolini, put him in prison and negotiated an armistice with the Allies.
The Kingdom of Italy surrendered and joined forces to fight Germany. So one could say, it was the other way around and that Italy betrayed Germany. But in reallity Italy was more or less defeated anyway. The North African campaign ended in a disaster and the italian forces had no chance to fight of the Allied forces. In response to Italy switching sides, the germans and remaining italian fascists then attacked italian forces, occupied italy and destroyed military units like capital ships, so that they would not fall in Allied hands or be used against Germany.
Mussolini was freed from prison by german troops and then established a client-state in the german-controlled part of Italy - The Italian Social Republic - leading to a civil war in Italy.

I think the "Imperium" points to the old imperium, Rome. The love for the Imperium is pretty strong in more questionable heel real world lore, such as facism, who love Rome. So the comment from Sheamus actually makes sense, as Italy used the old Roman symbol when they went apesht, and so did the no-no Germans. However, they have removed any racism from the WW2 ideals, and focuses only on classic imperium ideals, like the original Italian facists who were not actually racist, but was easily "directed" by the no-no Germans towards their anti-semitism.
