  • We review the 2016 Kia Optima SX 2.0T. A look at the good and bad of the new generation model. This revision finally has chassis and suspension tuning to take it to the next level but will that be enough?

+mozillagenesis Even then the 2001-2005 Hyundai Sonatas are really really solid. The V6 models have aluminum blocks and heads with FORGED steel rods, pistons, and crankshaft. The I4s are direct Mitubishi clones of the famous 4G63 engine, just without a turbo, usually. I've seen turbo Elantras with it.

I have a 2012 Kia Optima SX since new, 4 years and a couple of months of owning it and not a single problem. Still rides like day 1 with no rattles or wear, just very few rock chips on the lower bumper but not a single scratch. Our Toyotas have much more wear and tear than the Optima and have not been as reliable. Kia is making cars now like Toyota used to in its prime years. It is amazing how much better they have gotten in the last decade

Fusion, Optima and Mazda 6 take the cake in the midsized category. Only issue with the Optima is the 2.4 and 2.0 Theta engines. They've gotten much more reliable, but still have carbon build problems, and finicky rod bearings. That being said, my best friend has a 15 Optima and it has been flawless for 140K of abuse, neglect, dirt roads. Cosmetically it's not the best, but the mechanics of the car are holding up fine for the amount of neglect the car is subjected to. All the suspension parts are tight as the day it was built even though it's been on rutted dirt roads more than paved. The Mazda 6 is more reliable and the Fusion and Kia are equally reliable (Not the 1.5/1.6EB Fusion)

@@gawdstockton483 i got her when she had 12,000 miles and now almost 4 years, a handful of oil and filter changes +50,000 miles later? I'm still in love with this car. Only thing I've had to replace the tires, I enjoy long road trips that end up with a bit of driving on gravel, snow, ect. Not to mention the one SavageGeese reviewed is an SX while mine is the SXL (fully loaded af). I've gone to Vegas, Utah, Arizona, and up and down California, a fantastic "GT" type of car. Only thing missing is AWD, massage seats and a bit more power. I wish they made this car into a similar body type like the stinger or just bring the wagon version from EU over to the states but I can only dream for now.

I bought a 2015 Optima EX 2.3L GDI brand new, and I love the balance between handling and ride quality. It's not a high end luxury car, but I get 40 MPG and it handles corners very well, but is not harsh and soaks up the bigger bumps comfortably. For a $21k car, with a 10 year warranty, you get lots of room and a comfortable, fuel efficient ride.

I like the opposition giving in a subtle ways. At the start, you mentionned how peoples are complaining about the power that was reduced a little bit, due to the introduction of a smaller turbo, that spools quicker. Then, during the test, you clearly point out that there is already too much power for a FWD.
I believe it could be called "irony of the modern market". Peoples want HP, even if they don't have the right chassis for using it.

I'm deciding on buying a new car and stopped here, the other review from another person didn't talk to highly of this car but after watching this review I'll go out to the Kia dealer and test drive one... I'm deciding between Honda Accord, Civic and this Kia Optima and maybe a used Acura. thanks

Excellent review. Mad ball skills, btw.
I think KIA needs to do what Hyunday is planning on doing with the Genesis brand, it needs to set itself apart from the affordable car and get into the luxury car game. The optima might not be the car for it, but thinking of the Cadenza or the k-900? 9000? (or whatever the hell name is). And for the love of God, start offering AWD in its sedans.
Also, I'd totally buy a wagon Optima. Here, take my money Kia.

This was the video that made me buy my 2017 Optima SX last year. I wanted this to be the car I drove into the ground from owning it for as long as I could. But because of how crazy the market has been I was able to get out of my loan and make a little bit of cash. It was really hard to make that decision because it’s such a great car. My first couple cars I didn’t give a damn for when I got rid of them, this one felt like leaving my dogs to go to college.

@@hl6859 Well I can’t say anything about my specific car as I sold it before 40,000 miles. But I never had any problems. I did 2 oil changes, a battery change, and changed the air filters at the suggested time and never had to think about anything mechanical wise.
However my father in law has a 2013 Optima that has basically the same engine but higher output and he’s well over 100,000 miles and doing all the scheduled maintenance. The only problems he has had was the paint peeling and something in the folding mirror wiring going nuts but everything engine and transmission wise works great. I think the goose has a fine print series on GDI engines and said that so long as you use a special cleaner every x amount miles you should avoid that build up problem but I could be misremembering.
All in all, I think it’s a good engine, turbo or NA, and should be pretty reliable should you take care of it.

@@hl6859 Just know, like I soon will, as I'm getting a 2016 Kia Optima SXL, that these cars are known for engine failure. There was a class action lawsuit against Hyundai/Kia about 'faulty engines' and they had to recall like a million cars because of it. If you install the KSDS, it will give your engine a lifetime warranty. You have to be on point with your maintenance schedules, and to avoid headache in the future, only go to Kia to get those done or else they can more than likely deny any serious issue that may arise, should you wish to be compensated for it.
