Dr, DKG is so right, and so point on. I was a little young for the sixties, but the example a couple of my uncles set for me, have been a guide for me ever since. Don’t get me wrong, I had a long career as a federal peace officer, but a level of compassion, a dedication to fair treatment, and respect for equal rights and the safety of all, has always been for most in my mind.

When I watch MAGA supporters at rallies, it looks like they relish in the obnoxiousness, the breaking of norms and civility and embrace the cruelty. It's all theatre and entertainment. It's "us" against "them." It's not about logic and policy but all about "me" and "my." There's no community or social consciousness and empathy. I don't know how we correct this existing attitude and frame of mind. I do hope we can learn and pay attention to this moment and find solutions to correct course.

It's complex. Because so many people have the luxury of embracing radical and even dangerous ideologies in the USA, without direct repercussions, they tend to abuse the privilege of free speech. Two of my favorite authors. The book Remembering America touched me deeply. I was a young man in the 60's they were exciting and tragic. And specially at what could have been. My wife and I have always been involved in politics only because very thing you do is political, and now we live in these politically insane times. I can only hope we come to our senses in time.

The 60's!! "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Yeah. We have gone right back there, and even back to the 1860's out here in Arizona. I thought I/we were done with all of that. But, no. Here we go again.
Young people were fed up in the 1960's and we let the Establishment know that. We won out in many instances. But now it is our grandkids time to do it all again. I wish you luck.
And those assassinations were absolutely devastating and soul-wrenching. That was NOT fun. We lost some true heroes then. Tough times, fun times, glorious times.

Born in 1957 I have my athletes in many sports I have learned and looked to help me in sports. I'm a 9 time Ironman Triathlon finisher . But its also important to kind our minds sharp Doris has been a amazing role model with history to me . And I read her book on the Roosevelts . Save videos such as this in a Doris file . The book The Long Southern Strategy not from her , but when I 'm studying it , its in line of how she explains in detail how history was and how yes we can move backwards .
All that history about the sixties and no mention of the strange fruit which Billie Holiday sang about where no one was arrested when black people were lunched all over the country. That's why trump is acceptable to America.

I was lucky enough to meet Doris Kearns Goodman at the local bookstore in Concord, MA some decades ago as she was doing a book signing and she autographed a copy of her
just published book "No Ordinary Time" for me. Even then she was quite famous but very warm and down to earth.

I love her books..they are so in-depth researched history in actual important individuals histories that all connect to important times in the USA. They give you a concise look into actual historical changes to improve our county. Strength comes from the tough times we overcome. I will read this new book on the 1960’s. Bless her …she is a treasure…I lived through the 1960’s…..it is hard for the younger generations to understand the turmoil this country endured. They are reaping the rewards of the struggles to change for the better. Her book should be such an in-depth presentation of factual information of those years. Every American needs to read her books on the civil war “Team of Rival” Abraham Lincoln and his unusual team that governed during that terrible time in American history. Some are still mentally fighting the civil war in politics wanting to destroy takes us back to 1850 - 1860’s division.
Her Great Depression tackled by FDR years to pull the country out of it. WWII threw the USA into another time Americans pulled together for the world and the USA greater good. She won a Pulitzer Prize for “No Ordinary Time” Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt the home front during WWII. Doris Kearns Goodwin is a fantastic writer.

I was a teenager in the late '60s. I think its not so much that we're going backwards as it is that we simply stopped moving forward. We've been stuck in a sort of limbo made possible by our own economic wealth and military/political might. That wealth and might - and indeed, dominance of the world - is now waning, and people who are not of a certain age understandably feel that everything is falling apart. But its not. We've simply been living in a fantasy world for the last 60 years. And as a culture we've been stagnant. And now we're waking up to hard, cold reality.

I cannot help but think back to the movie Gladiator, and though it is historical fiction, I can't help but think of Marcus Aurelius as he spoke to Maximus of his presumed successor, his son Commodus, "Commodus is not a moral man!
