  • Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin recalls the feeling of demonstrating in support of civil rights in the 1960s and urges young people to get out and push back against present-day forces that threaten to take away the rights and freedoms achieved decades ago. Her latest book “An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s” is available now.

    What's freaking me out is that my youth has become historical. Vietnam, assassinations, protests and sit ins, don't trust anyone over 30, Goldie Hawn, hippies, school boycotts. My grandkids have no idea, my kids have no idea. We DID stop a war, we DID open up rights of women, minorities. She's wrong about gay rights, that was the 80s, but it was starting in the 60's. The psychological divisions are preventing us from defeating MAGA, but it can be done. The battle now is information. Lies are more readily believed and passed than truth. But if we don't unite, autocrats will take over and we won't have a planet worth living on in a few decades. Let's get out in the streets this summer and PEACEFULLY let our agenda be known.

    • @chezmoi42
      @chezmoi42 Před 13 dny +20

      True, gay rights got a lot of publicity in the 80's because Reagan 'just said no' to the AIDS epidemic, but there was so much going on in the sixties. Where did you grow up? Have you never heard of José Sarria? The '69 Stonewall riots? I moved to San Francisco at the age of 20, and watched so much progress unfold there across the sixties. Back in Seattle for the seventies, we saw the solidarity building. I suppose working in fashion and interior design gave me a closer view of the gay scene.
      You're so right, we do need to exercise our rights to demonstrate and advocate for those who don't have the power to protect themselves. We need the kind of enthusiasm that brought out the pink hats for the Women's March in 2017. I'm afraid we've become a little pessimistic since then; time to revive our faith in one another.

    • @misterderp4566
      @misterderp4566 Před 13 dny

      I'm afraid that they do...a frightening number of young and minority voters are looking at third party candidates. While this is justifiable, given the situations so many are in, and that many of them grew up to folks like Bernie Sanders and Stacey Abrams, many of them just want to see the system burn. Keep in mind, a lot of young voters were quarantined in the years they came of voting age. They see what's come out of the pandemic and translate it to Biden. They don't understand who was behind the wheel when the policies that affect them now came into place. They see that they're being treated unfairly, that the system (including both corporations and government -- they kind of go hand-in-hand) doesn't care about them, and they want to raze it to the ground.
      What's being lost in the weeds, though, is that there is one candidate who will burn it down and replace it with utter fascism. Biden isn't great (although he's accomplished a lot, realistically) but the other side is comprised of drooling, gnashing-at-the-teeth, bloodthirsty idiots. BUT, plenty of young and/or minority folks still see the rotten pumpkin as the one who's there to "drain the swamp."
      Meanwhile, said candidate's fans are also willing to render everything to ashes. And they have more guns. Occupy Wall Street accomplished nothing. Black Lives Matter has accomplished nothing (sorry, but George Floyd should have been the end game -- we're not getting past that -- and also the organization got pretty corrupt).
      Young folks don't realize that the votes that really count are local. It's local and state governments that are stopping you from raising Pride flags or making your own decisions for your health, as is the case in Arizona, where the genius Kari Lake wants to take control. It's local superintendents in Florida who are enforcing book bans.
      Get out and vote. Every time. Except it's too late now. It's Biden or Nazism. We saw what happened when the PussyHats marched (EDIT: Roe was overturned); we saw what happened when the Magats marched (EDIT: the pumpkin responsible might still be re-elected).
      I hope you're right, pennygleeson, but I'm not confident.

His creation of the Great Society that grew out of his Great Depression experiences was counterbalanced by the great evil of Vietnam that ultimately led to the breakdown of Cambodia and the Cambodian genocide. I was 16 when the attached photograph of LBJ was taken. My more favored pictures of LBJ is when he had retired to his ranch, started wearing leisure suits, and grew his hair long. Then he was 64 (younger than I am now), had had two heart attacks, and was on the way to his third that would kill him in 1973. I felt at the time by growing his hair long he was showing that he had nothing more to prove, and he was giving a nod to the anti-war hippies who had long opposed him. This picture, taken in August 1972, was taken as Nixon's secret bombing war on North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos had come to light. www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/08/lbj-long-hair-photo/568447/

      You said exciting. Some people commenting here don't seem to know the meaning of that word. I was a very small child in the 60s, too young to actually remember MLK's or RFK's assassination and born after JFK's, but being the youngest child I heard a lot from my parents and older siblings. I can remember just the feeling of possibility and hope during that time, even in the 70s after all the assassinations. Has nothing to do with what race or gender you are. My parents and others around me were feeling hopeful as African Americans. They came into the 60s unable to access so many things and ended the decade with so many new opportunities and possibilities. Of course that was exciting. Unfortunately, the backlash was strong. Fortunately not strong enough to erase everything that was accomplished at that time.

What amazed me was that so many people were upset because she talked about slavery. The whole "it wasn't about slavery" faction was showing up, and now I can see how that faction has blended into the MAGA crowd. They want to deny slavery was a bad thing and sent us off to war against one another (and if you don't believe that you'd better look at the published reasons the seceding states gave BEFORE the war and not the rewritten history that came AFTER the war). The MAGA crowd is just the same - the America they want is the one from 1864 Arizona where blacks are slaves, women don't vote, and white Anglo-Saxon protestants run everything in accordance with their own beliefs.

    It was an inspirational time. I don't know though how younger people are going to get that umph to make themselves get their future. Too much today is like an old country song where bad things keep happening I gotta jump off a bridge kinda song. I can only hope that is their catalyst to I better do something cause I don't want to be on that bridge. Good luck young people, this is your generation. ✌️ Live Long and Prosper 🖖🌅🌎

      Doris Goodwin!!!! Plagiarist extraordinaire!! Kicked off the Pulitzer Prize board for lifting huge chunks of 3 other authors' work and calling it her own. One of these authors was Rose Kennedy, the mother of JFK. Dear Doris was also sued by another author with whom she settled out of court. And yet here she is -- being lauded by the media as she comes out to flog another of "her" books.

    Incredible interview. I wonder why she has stopped the morning shows. Great way to recount history.

    The many injustices suffered in the 60’s rocked the country, and young people fought back. I believe it’s happening again. So much promise in the younger generations. You can say what you will about “kids today” but I see enough good ones to believe they can and will “right the ship”.

    She is so right ... I was young in the 1960s and remember well yearning for all of those issues she brought forth on the Colbert show, women's rights, voting rights, civil rights, etc. (listen to her for the list), and history is something from which we must learn. And the fight has never stopped. VOTE VOTE VOTE
    Doris is brilliant, and we must encourage all the young people (like she and I once were) to never give up and to fight the epidemic of ignorance that continues to spread.
