A traveler mistake in India.

  • From my hotel in Paharnganj I take a gas powered auto rickshaw ride through the old Delhi with it’s markets, stalls, vendors, cows and many people, to Old Delhi Station to catch a train to Jaipur.
    At Old Delhi Station I get on the wrong train believing it to be mine, I have no idea where it was going. After realizing my mistake I manage to get off before it leaves and I eventually find the right train to Jaipur.
    Getting on the right train I’m nervous because I booked a chair but could only see sleepers. It turns out I was booked a sleeper instead of a chair which was a nice surprise.
    The train ride to Jaipur is a very enjoyable one this time of the year with windows down watching farmland slide by outside while enjoying life inside the train.
    Drink and food sellers wander the isles, families eat together, young people hang out, and many take the opportunity to sleep.
    There weren’t any other westerners on the third class train which I found surprising as this slower and cheaper form of travel presents the westerner with a fly-on-the-wall experience into Indian life.

    Third class was fine in the 70s when I was young but now I use 2ac lower bunk

    • @fiascodagama1
      @fiascodagama1  Před 7 měsíci

      The advantage of the lower bunk being you have a view all day. On the top you're a bit enclosed, so I understand why that would be your choice. The seventies would have been a great time to see India.

    An ideal traveler, people need to learn from you on travelling-patience, curiosity & most importantly embracing local culture. In a hectic place like India, its upto people to have an open mind, which you have in plenty. Kudos on your commentary too

    • @fiascodagama1
      @fiascodagama1  Před 7 měsíci +3

      Obviously people can travel how they are most comfortable but I don't see the reason in going somewhere if you're not interested in living or understanding at least a little about how the people in the country you're visiting live, at least as best you can in the time you have. patience and an open mind are the first two things one should pack for their travels. Thanks for saying hi.

      @@fiascodagama1 Travelers to India are usually overwhelmed by the noise, pollution, colors, language, crowd etc particularly if they are not prepared for it. Few who are prepared cope & learn rather than look at the negatives. People from west particularly are not used to the very hostile conditions unless they have travelled around. Kudos to people like you. Would like to see you in the south of India & dont forget to try different cuisines. Very best for your travels.

    You seem to be a down-to-earth and courageous person, Wayne. Many travelers try to avoid the exposure from the heat in a non-A/C compartment, but they do offer you more opportunities for both witnessing as well as partaking in genuine interactions with other folks, which you seem to value. Btw, you could also come down from the berth and take a seat below - that chair is included in the same ticket.

    1. If you paid 6$ for the ticket you were in the wrong seat. That is the price for 3rd AC sleeper tor 3rd AC Chair Car.
    2. You travelled on Non AC Sleeper and the ticket price on that class for Delhi to Jaipur is 3$.
    3. Its does not matter which class you travel, it takes the same time since a single train has all these classes in them.
    4. Even if you travel on unreserved general class with a 1$ ticket, you will reach at the same time as those travelling 1st AC. Except unreserved general class is for the poorest of the poor and it can be Hell depending on the train.

    • @fiascodagama1
      @fiascodagama1  Před 7 měsíci

      It was a late purchase through an agent so I considered there may have been an extra charge of sorts. And while it wouldn't matter which seat you had on the same train, different trains I believe take a different amount of time to get to their destination with what I thought would be faster trains consisting of more 2ac and first class cars. But I'm obviously no expert as I'm simply a traveller finding his way. You seem to understand Indian rail very well so I will assume you're a resident here. Thanks for the information.

    Indeed, by traveling in the economy class of the train you surly able to interact with different kind of people. Did you do this to save some bucks or to experience the interaction with locals ? ❤❤❤

    • @fiascodagama1
      @fiascodagama1  Před 7 měsíci +5

      Mostly to experience local travel rather than being in a train car with westerners, not that there's anything wrong with wanting to travel with other travelers. I think traveling as locals do is a more rewarding, or authentic, experience. Again though, people should travel how they want, it's just a personal preference. Saving a couple of dollars is also welcome. :)
