    Sorry Cole, but I laughed so much when the dust flew out. So relatable to doing these things at home and stuff you just don’t see on the editing tv shows !

    With the nylon cup, I have had sucess drilling a hole in the centre, spraying in some penrating oil, and then getting the air compressor and blowing in the hole, and the nylon cup just pops out.

    Came just in time - was debating on moving off of hydro suspension and there is just way more info on cones

      Hydro can be really comfy if its all working properly but its certainly more work to maintain. I also wouldnt describe it as the most performance oriented configuration.

    Great basic maintenance Video. Very useful. I did it about 12 years ago 😃.
    Would a bump stops benefit the Swing arm movement before the dampers stop it. In both directions, pump and extension (just a few inches apart)?

    Great video this is the next job I'm doing on my mini
    One thing i would advise though.
    Do not use the tie rod subframe mount to jack the car up on. I have seen these bend slightly especially if the jack is not positioned correctly and that ruins the suspension geometry
    You are better off carving a block of wood to fit the front of the subframe so your axel stands can be positioned under the flats of the subframe
    Regards
    Simon

    Thanks for making this video for us and I am glad to see you making videos again. I have one quick question: for a Mini that is not used every day and maybe once a week, how often do you recommend adjusting the Hi Los (apart from the obvious sign of seeing the suspension lower than usual)? Thanks!!

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for the kind words! Glad to be back making some vids. Hi-los dont really need regular adjustment unless you are seeing the suspension lower/sagging. They aren't a wearing point like bushings so as long as they are maintaining the height of the car, thats all that matters.

    Hey Cole, great video. Sorry about the thread issue, that is very frustrating.
    On mine, I wanted to lower the car a bit for a more preferred stance. Seems like the previous owner already put in adjustable trumpets, so I just changed the distance between the nuts. Once everything was buttoned up, I went for a drive, and was hearing squeaking at my front right (RHD car). I double checked wheel rub, and it seems clearance is good. When I took the wheel off and felt around a bit, it seems like the Hilo can wiggle around in there AND my cone can spin in place and wiggle around (cone does not do this on other side). Is this an issue, or will it just re-seat itself once the car is lowered onto its own weight again. If so, how might I remedy this? Thanks for the help! Love the channel.

    The cone compressor has an option of two threads. It wasn't mentioned in the video, but have you encountered the old style thread? According to minispares, all cones have been metric since 1976.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci +1

      This must have been the root of my thread stripping issue. My Compressor was bought secondhand and only came with the SAE threaded rod.

      @@classicminidiy Well, luckily they aren't that expensive! would recommend buying a thread checker set if you dont have one. Bought one along with a thread cleaning set (NOT a tap and die). Great for checking thread size and pitch, then following it up with cleaning the threads.

      Is it possible to thread a nut and washer on the tool underneath the front cone prior to compression so rubber threads aren’t stripped?

    Great video. I personally have been a massive fan of the MiniSpares Red Spot cones. Just can’t go wrong with MiniSpares, really. Still curious how “stiffer” cones might feel when paired with the Quantum dampers sold by KAD, as I’ve been eyeing those for a while now.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci

      Thank you! I don't think your cones will feel any stiffer really. The dampers help smooth large road jolts and assist with rebound. I found using the firmer settings on my protech shocks kept the tires in contact with the road much better and it made a dramatic impact on my cornering and mountain driving.

    Strange, I replaced my old cones with MS EVO's a couple of months ago and thought they held up really well. The compression tool comes with two interchangeable threaded ends, metric and imperial. The EVO's are coarse metric thread. The imperial thread is much finer. Could you have used the wrong thread maybe?
    I found there was a lot of excess rubber that gummed up the thread too so it helped to run the tool through them a few times on the bench. Copper-eze on the thread helps too.
    I still have nightmares about that upper arm pin removal and reinstall. Not a fun job!

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci

      This must have been the root of my thread stripping issue. My Compressor was bought secondhand and only came with the SAE threaded rod. I have done the upper pin job on a few cars probably a dozen or so times and it genuinely never gets any easier/more fun. Hahaha

    • @JB-NZ
      @JB-NZ Před 7 měsíci

      I was thinking exactly the same thing. So stripped the thread essentially, nothing wrong with the part itself, just the wrong compressing tool used for the new cones. Minispares Tool PN: 660330 is what you need, as it comes with both thread rods. The other tool they sell is Metric only. So I guess the one @classicminidiy had was imperial only - not seen one of those myself - OG maybe?

    Shocks where only thing not replaced is that what’s causing it to not sit high enough ?

    Did you have the right thread on the cone compressor?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 9 měsíci

      This ended up being the culprit. The new evo cones moved to metric. Old ones were SAE

    Beautiful car! Are the wipers on backwards or did it not matter in the UK?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci

      I believe they are backwards but in my opinion this orientation works better for RHD cars. Even though it’s technically incorrect. Lol

    what are the differences between the hi-los available on the market? Or any issues picking up used?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci +1

      The biggest difference I am aware of is the difference in knuckle joint post size. Minisport and specifically the smootharide hi-los use a non-standard size knuckle joint. So if you go that route, you have to always purchase replacement knuckles from them. Otherwise all the cone hi-los are essentially the same, just made with different materials.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Its been a bit since my initial setup but I think these are the settings I used. Both of these are how many clicks from the softest setting.
      * Road - 6 clicks front / 4 clicks back
      * Track - 8 clicks front / 6 clicks back

    Coil springs are liable to snap if hitting speed bumps, or pot holes in any car. Its not so much an installation problem.
