- On BudgetEDH we build fun and optimized commander decks with a budget in mind. In this week's episode, we build a $100 budget Zaxara, the Exemplary deck. This new X-Spells tribal from Commander 2020 is synergistic with X spells at hydras. Zaxara is not only a mana dork, tapping for 2 mana of any color, but it also spits out X/X Hydras when you cast X-Spells. We will abuse Zaxara's mana generating ability to generate infinite mana and gain a lot of advantage by casting huge X-spells to close out the game.

This is a bit late but I would like to point out that you won't draw a card of Zaxara if you play an X spell with cards like Kiora (draw card if a creature with a certain power enters the battlefield). This is because the tokens enter the battlefield as 0/0 and then gets the counters on them. This is specified in the wizards rulings on zaxara unfortunantley.
This might be the first time I would play something with blue in it. Looks like something I would love to play with against friends. Great video and keep up the good job.

This seems like a very interesting commander to handle x-spells with. Seems pretty powerful
Awesome choices. I also would recommend Astral Cornucopia, Retribution of the Ancients, possibly Master Biomancer, Vorel of the Hull Clade, Deepglow Slate, Diabolic Revelation, and Upwelling. Great on the stats though!
Those upgrades are essentially Sultai good stuff!

I’d love to have this deck or the stormsire deck, ikoria has a lot of cool big monsters that seem unique and could be great dnd bosses. Beware adventurers 😈
I recommend considering inspiring call, draws some cards and gives all your guys indestructible. If you have a budget and need some hydra protection it’s a good card.

What do you think about The Ozolith in this deck? It could be a very handy way of keeping up the tempo of the deck. I also think that Spell Burst or Wurmcalling would be fun in this deck too

So thassas is really good! If you have infinite mana, it will let you grab any 2 cards from your deck.
So yeah, just grabs you your win cons. Very convenient! I also love that it can be a counter when you need it!

Cool deck
I made this deck, I run Pemmin's Aura and Freed from the Real and all the tutors and 3 cmc transmute cards to get them. Then my only X spells are Torment of Hailfire, Exsanguinate and Walking Ballista, as well as Capsize which all win the game with infinite mana.
Jacking this deck full of hydra's and X spells is sub-optimal.
I really love casting big spells and just X spells in general

I like buying the precon. Lots of great cards, and very affordable. You can always upgrade the decks from there.
Now I know what to do with the other half of my Otrimi Infect deck.

I'm still confused about this, but are you sure Elemental bond and kiora work with zaxara's tokens? Because the way its worded on the oracle makes me think it won't work: "The Hydra token enters the battlefield as a 0/0 creature. Any abilities that modify or trigger on this event apply. After the token is on the battlefield but before any player can take actions, +1/+1 counters are put onto the token."

Usually these kinds of token abilities state, that you create a token, that enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. Zaxara's ability specifically states, that you create a 0/0 token and then put X +1/+1 tokens on it. Which is really odd, because 0/0 creatures usually instantly die. I guess, that isn't the case? Anyway, I don't think Zaxara's tokens work with Kiora and Elemental Bond. Even though you see them in a lot of lists. The wording on Zaxara is simply written in such a way, that it doesn't work like it normally would. I think. Kiora's even on EDHRec...like, seriously, the hell?
The way it's worded on Gatherer it definitely does not work. As you yourself quoted: "The Hydra token enters the battlefield as a 0/0 creature. Any abilities that modify or trigger on this event apply...." Kiora and Elemental Bond "trigger on this event", which means the abilities see the 0/0 creature as it enters the battlefield. The counters get put on the token after it has entered.
I am a huge fan of of X spells matter.
This has a strong potential...
Edhrec showed awesome cards to go into the 99, but the prices on many of the hydras were no bueno. This budget take is much more doable.

Good deck building but elemental bond doesn’t work with the tokens entering. They enter as 0/0s then get counters.
Im not sure if doubling season and parallel lives would work, because zaxara creates a token then puts +1/+1 counters on them and because doubling season and parallel lives say instead, you would just make two 0/0 hydras, which would die instantly
I tried building similar to this when I first received the card. Unfortunately, all I managed to do is learn how few hydra cards I have.
