  • Pianist, singer, actor and entertainer Liberace, who was nicknamed The Glitter Man and Mr. Showmanship died in Palm Springs in 1987.
Over many decades, he owned four homes here, in the desert and died in his forth and last home. Today, I'm visiting all four homes and taking a walking tour of each neighborhood.

In March of 1955, James Dean did in fact race at the airport of Palm Springs. His car was his Porsche 356 Super Speedster. Some say that was his death car. Not true! He died in a newly acquired Porsche 550 Spyder, he named, “Little Bastard,” after himself. In the end it lived up to its name.
Anyway, at the time, he was a neophyte racer, and was given very little respect by the veteran drivers. It were those Palm Springs races that proved him a worthy competitor. He won the first race by over half a mile. It was a series of races, intended to crown a champion. James Dean finished 2nd overall. Quite respectable!

Not sure what day you did the walk but I know how you feel when the winds bring in the smoke from wildfires. Last Saturday we were smoked out by the Gorman (Post Fire) and another fire north of the high desert for a few days. The winds drifted the smoke eastward above the mountains down to Joshua Tree. It took a few days before we could see blue skies again.
Wonderful walk Steve exploring Liberace's homes even though your camera gave out. I enjoy seeing the neighborhoods so quiet. I have to remember you walk early mornings when traffic is light. I can imagine what Palm Springs was like in the 40's through the 60's, a real getaway for the rich and famous wanting peace away from the big City. One night 10 years ago, I drove to the airport to pick someone up at 7 pm but found out her plane was delayed for four hours! So I drove to Clarks Health Food store via Diana Shore Drive at sunset and the lights lining the road created such a magical drive! I was wondering why doors were pink or salmon colored and your idea why this might be makes a lot of sense.
I looked up the Aloe Palm Canyon Community Project. It's planned as a 71 unit affordable housing project for seniors (and doesn't mention LGBTQ) but will be in the mid-century style. The NPLH funding reserves 25 units as permanent supportive housing for seniors experiencing homelessness (and those with physical and mental health issues.) They were awarded $6.4 million in state funding to make it affordable housing.

It’s been windy here the last two days and there are always a few fires burning this time of year in the desert surrounding Phoenix. The late night summertime monsoons are usually our only relief. All this Pink talk reminded me that my childhood home built in 1954 had a pink & gray bathroom. I believe that the former Andaz Hotel ran into code violations during construction and sections had to be torn down and rebuilt properly causing delays. Growing up, my mom was a manager in the appliance department at Kmart. I believe it was considered Cathedral City, and she would have several stars come in all the time buying appliances from her. Redd Foxx and Milton Berle are the two that come to mind. Also, I met Lucille Ball when I was a little girl, with my mom, at the Alpha Beta grocery store. I met her twice. It’s a long and funny story, but I was having a “fit,” she walked up to my mom and mentioned that I was acting like a brat. Lol! Let me just tell you, she probably was not lying. 🤣🤷‍♀️ I don’t quite remember that conversation much, but they had a nice chat. She wasn’t rude, but my mom said that she was honest. Anyway, the time I remember meeting her was about a year or two later. I was maybe six years old. From what my mother had always told me, she said she remembered me. I don’t know if that’s quite true. But, I remember meeting her, and it was lovely! I remember her raspy voice particularly. My dad was a fireman for over 25 years in Palm Springs. He has some amazing stories! Definitely not really for social media. I’m excited to see the episode about the Palm Springs mall. Is the original movie theater still there? I haven’t wandered back there on my visits. I might need too. lol! I remember seeing Star Wars or Empire strikes back there. Anyway, sorry for chatting too much. I hope you have a great day! ✌🏼🏳️‍🌈❤️

You were pretty close to where I lived when you were talking about the Mall. I didn't know until a year or so ago that it had been torn down when I was using "street view" on google and "satellite". To my surprise it was an empty lot as you said. Palm Springs seems like it's doing what a lot of cities are, tearing down a lot of their older architecture. Which is a shame and it depletes a lot of the character once adored by so many. But progress is progress for the almighty dollar I guess. Is the Desert Surgery Center still there? It had buildings both fronting Palm Canyon and Indian, across from the PS Hospital on Indian. Probably not. They had the first MRI machines available in the desert, before the hospital I think, but not 100% sure now, it's been a hot minute (1990). Stay cool!

Hi Steve, I don't know if you remember this or not, but when Liberace died his body went to the coroner's office in PS. However his body was then taken to the LA coroner's office. The hearse that his body was in was escorted by police. In my opinion this was all done so that the LA corner could make a name for himself by outing what Liberace really died from. That's just a sad way of the times.
When it comes to his partner Scott Thorson, there are many conflicting stories. Liberace did have him get plastic surgery and then Scott became addicted to drugs from that and the popular "Hollywood diet" at the time, which included many drugs. The real truth will never be known. Scott did end up in jail and any chance he gets he will gladly speak about his time with him. Sickening if you ask me.
Thanks for the memories and the walk Steve, peace...

The fires are frightening. We just got back into our home last night after being evacuated due to Aero fire (currently 45% contained over 5,300 acres burned).

So, I did a little reading on plantar fasciitis and have a concern I’d like you to address to your doctor. The literature says, overuse, in people with plantar fasciitis, may cause the plantar fascia to rupture. That can be painful.
Just ask doc if you should limit your walking routine until your plantar fasciitis clears. It’s generally a temporary condition. I would suggest that it’s your walks that presented the condition. However, I would also suggest you keep walking, it’s good for you. But, I’m no doctor!!! Talk to yours… thanks. You’re right! 80% of people have or will experience plantar fasciitis in their lifetimes.
At 12:03 or there abouts, “It’s very very quiet… I don’t know if you can hear how quiet it is here?” 😂😂😂

Thanks for the heads up rhv! And yes, I did think it was especially quiet on this walk. I took a walk the next day and it was even quieter. I commented about it a few times in the video which will be posted next week. I will check more into the plantar fasciitis. I didn’t know there was anything that could rupture. My Podiatrist said it was just caused by the muscles not being stretched enough. Maybe it’s the muscles that can rupture if they get too tight? I will check into it. Thanks. 👍

enjoy your videos. Famed Figure Skating coach Frank Carroll just died in Palm Springs last week. I was wondering if you happen to know where he lived? and possibly where he was buried

Hi Roger, I don’t know who he is, but I will check into it. If I find his house or grave, I will share it in a video. Usually headstones aren’t placed for about six months to a year, so it might be a while.

Steve, what celebrity do you think owned the most homes in Palm Springs? And do you ever meet obnoxious people walking?

    • @theretiredlifewithsteve
      @theretiredlifewithsteve  Před měsícem

Hi Samuel, Liberace on four homes, Bob Hope owned three homes, very Manilow owned three homes, Elvis owned two homes so as far as I know, Liberace owned the most homes here. That’s a very interesting question. If I ever discover a celebrity who own more than four homes, I will definitely make a video about it and let you know. As for obnoxious people while I’m walking, about 50% of people never say hi when I say hi to them, but I guess that could be for lots of different reasons. I don’t recall anyone being obnoxious though. I usually walk very early in the morning before most people are up, so I usually don’t run into that many people. Other than people walking their dogs. I will have to think about this question for a while. I know I have had lots of busy bodies trying to tell me what to do and lots of people telling me. I shouldn’t be filming things over the years, but I don’t recall that happening on any of my walks so far. great question though Samuel. 👍
