Why did actor JAMES DEAN come to Palm Springs & where did he stay?

  • Four years ago, I read a story about the time actor James Dean came to Palm Springs and spent the night at a local hotel. I think I figured out which hotel he stayed in. It's the same hotel I stayed in, years later, after my grandparents died and our family no longer had a Palm Springs home to visit.

    An old friend of our family actually worked as a gaffer on Rebel Without a Cause and once said James was the nicest actor to crew and staff he ever met. He was even eating his lunch in a corner of a set one day after all the actors had eaten and James went out of his way to come over and sit with him while he ate and talked to him to make him feel less lonely...thanks for this!

    I enjoy hearing and seeing the history of Palm Springs. It was great finding the artwork of James in that gallery. I was born the year James Dean raced there! He was an interesting character who died too young. If he had lived I wonder if he would have joined other celebrities and and purchased a house in that area. I'm guessing he was too much of a young wild spirit to live in the civilized confines that was becoming Palm Springs.

    • @theretiredlifewithsteve
      @theretiredlifewithsteve  Před měsícem +1

      Hi ER, that is interesting to think about it now that you mention it. I think youare right, he was too much of a rebel to do what everyone else was doing. He probably would’ve bought a place up in Joshua tree like so many of the young rebels have been doing for decades now. 👍

    • @EarlyRiser--
      @EarlyRiser-- Před měsícem

      @@theretiredlifewithsteve Yes I agree. There is an LA Times article about Joshua Tree from "Feb, 25, 2005 Staking claim to a new bohemia" which I read back then when planning where to retire. (It's still online if you are interested.) But when the recession hit in 2009 or so Joshua Tree and the surrounding area had over 1,000 homes in foreclosure around 2013 at those inflated prices. Nothing was being sold unless you had cash for the bank. I knew someone in Joshua Tree who was older and I purchased a cabin from her about 15 miles from the town and the Nat'l Park. Many that had money still living here were from that article, architects, actors, directors, musicians, poets, artists, etc.
      Now its different. During the Pandemic folks from LA who wanted to escape the big city where they were locked indoors began buying land and homes. LLC's from all over the US bought up land too. No more a "new bohemia" but a land grab to create their dream, turning old cabins into Airbnb's, building getaway homes of weird designs. However, the vacation rental business ruined the local economy in Joshua Tree. The businesses that supported the National Park could not afford to hire at the minimum wage because those working the front line whether at grocery stores, tourist places, gas stations, etc., could not find low income places to live, and in fact monthly rentals were disappearing. Some of my favorite local businesses closed. Rather than working at Wal-Mart, or in a restaurant, some workers tried cleaning Airbnb's.
      Anyway, the Airbnb craze has slowed so hopefully it will balance out. When I moved here less than a mile away there was a place that Hollywood folks secretly stayed as a getaway. Not advertised outside but known to the inner circle. Folks like Johnny Dep, and other bohemian like characters found their solitude there. Sorry for writing so much but I thought you would be interested in the article from the LA Times which shared Palm Springs was too busy so they were looking for a quieter environment.

    the Palm Springs airport fountain is a gift to Palm Springs from one of Mexico's most talented architects, Julio de la Pena, who, during his first visit to Palm Springs with the city's then-mayor, Frank Bogert, expressed his surprise at the fact that there were so few fountains in "one of the most beautiful cities in the United states he had visited, this is made of Native stone from Guadalajara (aka Cantera). Everytime i drive by it brings me joy to see a piece of my hometown here in palm springs specially being a fountain that Guadalajara has so many!

    Ahhhh ... this was a nice remembrance of Memorial Day four years ago and your Mum. God bless her, raising six sons could not have been easy. I have never seen a picture of your Mum before. I wish I had seen more. And more of your other brothers too! We were immigrants from north eastern Canada and northern Ontario so all these famous people like James Dean and the rest really didn't have any significance to us. We were taught to reserve status for people who really contributed to humanity. So although I grew up in Southern California, we just never had that attraction to "famous" people. Sorry, we were just raised differently. ♥️☘️

      Hi Janet, thanks for sharing those personal memories with us. It’s easy to forget that not all of us grow up in the exact same way. I grew up in a culture where celebrities were worshiped. Specially, actors, and other entertainers. The fact that Marilyn and Elvis and James Dean all so young, made them immortal among those who worship celebrities. It’s funny to think that they are all three just as popular today or maybe even more so than when they were alive so many years ago! 😳👍

    Thanks Steve, what a great video to the memory of James Dean. I admired both his genius as an actor and his off screen charisma. I was always thankful that I was able to pay my own respects to his memory. Every time we drove along Hwy 101, we turned off to get to Hwy 46 and visit the Memorial site in the area where he lost his life. It's poignant but peaceful and gives pause for reflecting on his lifes' work. Maybe when you're traveling through the central coast with your grandson, you'll be able to check it out, if you haven't already done so! Thanks for sharing the photo of your Mom and brothers too!😊

    I agree with you that he stayed at the Casa Del Camino because Jimmy didn't like Hollywood actors in general. I can't imagine him staying in the same hotel with them. The car he raced at Palm Springs was a 356 Speedster, not the 550 Spyder he died in later that year, but he bought them from the same dealer at Competition Motors in Hollywood. Lew Bracker was not only his close friend, but he was also his insurance agent.
