- For Pride Month, I decided to visit my brother John in Sacramento, CA and to attend their Pride Parade and Festival. Even though he's lived in Sacramento since he was a teenager, he's never attended their annual Pride Celebrations. He's always been a conservative and a Republican, so that didn't surprise me.
I invited John and his girlfriend Roberta to join me this year, and they were happy to come along. This was the first time attending the Sacramento Pride for all of us.

I thought about taking my granddaughters. After seeing this I really wish I had! I used to take my kids each year we could attend.
Great to see Habitat for Humanity represented. My husband and I met at the international headquarters when we both were volunteering. I also loved seeing churches as well as the Girl Scouts.
So glad you could go and that your brother and his wife went, too!
🏳️🌈Happy Pride!
Hi RaeAnn, it was the most family friendly pride parade I’ve ever been to. That’s funny that you met your husband through habitat for humanity. 👍 Thanks for sharing. You sound like an amazing grandmother. Happy Pride 🏳️🌈😄👍
Seems like a pretty wholesome affair. Thanks for the post
It really is. Thanks Harry! 😊👍
I am an ally as I have seen what hate and exclusion can do to a person's Soul. I am so glad your brother and his GF went with you! People, all people deserve to live freely and safely. Enjoy Pride Month Steve!
Thanks mikki and nicely said! 😄👍
Great Video Steve Thank you!
Thanks J. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍
Loved this video Steve! Nice filming job. It was very funny when you teased your brother about taking a photo with Joe lol he s a good sport....in fact your whole family seems so nice 😊 thanks for taking us along
Lol, i’m glad you noticed that April! 😆 he’s definitely a good sport! 😄👍
The tower cafe's breakfast food looked amazing. Just like any outdoor parade and festival. I am glad to see your Republican brother and girlfriend so supportive. The cut out of Biden was funny. Except for a few nudity exposures, the event seemed more geared towards being family friendly, which is cool.
Thanks for watching Jake and yes, it was the most family friendly Pride parade I’ve ever been to! 😄👍
You should have checked out the cemetery in the area. Fun parade👍🍀🤠. I think of the show 8 is Enough, when I think of Sacramento 😁. I use to watch that, when I was a kid.
I have been to some of the cemeteries up there. This trip though I only had time for pride weekend. I’ve never heard of the show 8?
Mr. Steve, thanks for sharing this amazing tour of my first Pride Parade & Festivities. It was as if I were there. John and Roberta seemed to enjoy themselves. As always, you never disappoint. 🎉❤ Greetings from your friend in the great Peach 🍑 State of Georgia 🍑 Until the next video, take care. ❤
Hi Janice, that’s awesome that this was your first pride parade too! 😄👍
Definitely a family friendly parade and a good one for your brother and Roberta. Wonderful capture of the parade and you have a great sound system. That was funny you caught a Palm Springs Mounted Police shirt there! You brother made me look up Tower Records. I use to hang out at the store on Durant in Berkeley! I didn't know Tower Records started in Sacramento! Thanks for taking us along Steve!
Thanks for coming along ER. It was definitely a day full of fun and surprises. :-)
Fun!!!❤❤ thank you for sharing Steve!!!
Thanks for watching Deborah 😄👍
Look at all that fun! Good natured - good fun and oh so colorful! Everything and everyone is so supported no matter the organization! I am so pleased to see this and I am just a boring straight person! Love it! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
PS I give your brother credit. I wouldn't go near a Trump or Republican event. NEVER!
Hi Janet, glad you enjoyed it. It was pretty awesome. And I am with you. I wouldn’t go to a Trump event no matter how much you paid me. And even though my brother is a Republican, i’m pretty sure he would never go to a Trump event either! 😲
I love this! I have lived in Sacramento since I moved here from Hawaiʻi when I was 18 yrs old; I will be 65 this year. I worked on the first Sacramento Pride event, a picnic in McKinley Park and then the first parade. And if you are ever back in Sacramento, Iʻd love to show you some of our cemeteries!
Hi SH, that is awesome that you were a part of the very first pride there. It sounds like he moved there around the same time as my brother. Thanks for the offer. That’s very nice of you. 😄👍
Wow, you're lucky! My MAGA republican family doesn't even speak to me, but I'm good with that.
Hi Todd, yes, consider yourself lucky. 😆 My brother is a conservative, but he’s also a very caring and decent person, so I don’t think he supports Trump or MAGA. I’m always shocked how family members can choose religion and/or politics over their own family members. It’s beyond comprehension to me! sorry to hear that your family members are so extreme. 😩
@@theretiredlifewithsteveMy dad always taught me to look on the bright side... I could be club footed lol.🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@theretiredlifewithsteve ... You took the words out of my mouth. I was going to same the same thing. Religion and politics should NEVER be over a loved family member.
Has nothing to do with MAGA it’s just your family
If you love someone don't vote too hurt them. Crying.
Do you understand? Steve since I found your page it's been my safe for the grief of my son's murder. His wife was pregnant and killed herself. I don't know how someone could vote to hurt you and Jim and say they love.
@@RosemarieVillarreal-wh5kzSo sorry😢
Glad you're going to see your brother
Loved the tour of some of Sacramento! I've never been there, haven't been to California since I was about 5 (Navy brat, born there a long time ago! LOL). That neighbourhood of beautiful old homes was amazing, and I loved seeing the senior living apartment complex. The parade was everything a parade should be!
And wow, your brother fooled me a couple of times--I thought you'd given him the camera and he was filming you! LOL!
Hi Melanie, thanks for coming along with us. I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍
That was fantastic. I would have loved to have been there. Thanks for sharing this awesome video with us. 😊
Thanks Jodi. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍
Thank you Steve for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching Monika! 😄👍
As always, this is an excellent video! I hope your Brother and Girlfriend enjoyed themselves and that the Pride Parade has converted them into having a more open and accepting attitude toward our wonderful, diverse society.
Hi L, they really did enjoy themselves. And his girlfriend Roberta is not a Republican. They are both very caring and decent people and I think she’s been a good influence on him lol! 😄👍
In a lot of cases, significant other, or spouse usually has an influence on a person’s attitudes. As always, your video made my Lunch Time pleasant.
I have seen some pretty explicit clips from other gatherings, this is one that is more inclusive and shares a sense of community. The over the top explicit participants from other cities are tarnishing the message and spirit of Pride. Thanks for sharing 🎉❤😊 glad your brother joined in, not all Trump supporters are extremists. I too am what you might consider conservative and Republican.
This was definitely the most family, friendly pride parade I’ve ever attended! 😄👍
Love that tower cafe!
What a great ambience with all the tree covering 🌲 🌴
I know, right? And the food was really good too! 😄👍
Nice walking tour! The parade was fantastic and looked like lots of fun. 😊
It sure was Virginia! 😄👍
Glad your conservative brother made the gesture to you to attend.
Me too 1 😄👍
Hi Steve glad your brother was with you! 😀👍🌞🌈
Yes, thank you Linda! 😊👍
I Love My Gayborhood! Awesome Video!!!
Thanks Robbie! 😎👍
Hey, I just watched your video before I went to bed. I really loved it! I could tell your brother and sister in law enjoyed themselves immensely! I bet they were surprised that it was so much fun. Also, I could tell how much your brother loved having you down for a visit. On to your next adventure. P.S. I caught that video about you coming out in your grandson video. Loved Loved Loved ❤❤❤
Hi Heidi, thanks for watching. And you are right. They did have a really good time. And thanks for watching my grandson‘s video too! 😄👍
I’m glad all of you attended. It’s great you had fun.
Thanks Samuel 😄👍
What a fun parade! Thanks for sharing this, Steve. Glad you got to spend time with family as well.
Thanks Mary and me too! :-)
Steve you make me chuckle. Party all night long, screaming and yelling at the motel 6
lol 😩😂👍
Well, I can say I have never heard nor seen Sacramento's Pride, so thanks for adding that to my experiences of San Diego's (including the very first ones there), San Francisco's (1981), West Hollywood (early 80's) for my CA list. Sad to say only one in VA a long time ago when they were first starting out, but they have grown over the years so I hear. Sacramento, in my opinion, looked older, and lots of women! There was that young little "blue" number you filmed, DOM! lol He was sort of refreshing and stood out in the crowd (ok, so there was one more that went beyond normal exposure for me). Thanks for sharing and glad you got together with your Rep Brother (and his wife?), I thought he was very gracious and a marvelous host to boot!
Hi kb, it is fun to see how different Pride parades & festivals are in different cities. This one was definitely the most family friendly and had the most kids. I was really surprised. It was nice to see all ages from babies to grandparents. And I bet my brother wasn’t the only Republican lol! Thanks for sharing! 😄👍
Looks like everyone was having a good time. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Yes, it was a lot of fun. Thanks for watching Renee! 😄👍
Nice parade thank you for including it!
Thanks for watching Sharon! 😄👍
I enjoyed the whole video. That parade was very nice. Nice to see your brother
Thanks Sally. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍
Steve I'm really pleased for you ' looks like the idea of inviting your brother John and his partner to the Pride Festival an incite of the Pride 🌈 of Saramento. Steve the video speaks for itself ' an enjoyable time you's all had. I myself have been to a number of Pride Festivals here in England 🇬🇧 UK. My youngest daughter is a proffessional singer and she has voluntary done Live music on stage for the spectators
mainly songs of Katy Perry 'as she is UK tribute artist Katy Kerry. Thanks Steve for bringing this your time with brother at the Festival.
Hi Patrick, thank you for sharing this with us. Your daughter sounds amazing! 😄👍
I love the Tower Cafe and Tower theater
Sacramento still has a lot of small town to it. I think that this was a good starter parade and festival. By the end of the month your brother and his girlfriend will be ready to take the train down to San Francisco for SF Pride. 🤣
Hi Will, I agree, I love the old small town feel of the city. And yes, it was definitely the perfect starter parade lol! 😆👍
What a great parade and festival Steve!! 🏳️🌈 It was nice seeing John and Roberta too~ Glad you got to visit with your cousin🎉 Joan
Thanks Joan, it really was an awesome weekend all around! 😄👍
Thanks! Great video!
I liked your brother’s story about the history of Tower Cafe and records. Really good recording of the parade, nice pacing and angle. That was a really upbeat parade and festival.
Glad you enjoyed it ventrust! 😄👍
Thank you Steve, I lived in Sacramento for twelve years and this brought back some good memories. Glad you had a good time with your brother, he seems a good sport.
Hi Steve, yes, he is a good sport. 😄 That’s awesome that you lived there. It seems like such a terrific city to live in. 👍
Pretty cool Steve. Hey the hotel room is at least clean.
Thanks Beth! 😄👍
That festival looked like it went on forever.
It really did! It was my longest parades I’ve ever been to. It was almost 2 hours of fun! 😄👍
You have a very cool brother ! 👋😎👍
I agree Bill! 😄👍
Looks like fun!
It was 😄👍
Hey that was great thanks for taking us a long with you really wish I was there it was very festive love you lots tell Jim hello when you get home
Thanks for coming along with us debers! :-)
Thanks for the video Steve! I haven't been around lately as I took a road trip back to MN for my father's funeral. Why did I have to do a road trip is because I lost my pass port and I've been trying to get a drivers license, in which I've been trying to do since last fall. Any ways I've been waiting for my marriage certificate to prove my name change. It's just been a mess all the way around. Anyways, great video!!! I've seen a meme lately that should be printed on signs, bumper stickers and even the Pride flag, "Don't vote against someone you love rights" I have recently found out that my niece is transitioning and I support him fully but I'm very fearful that a return to the conservative view of LGBTQ+ puts him in grave danger.
Hi Amy, yikes, that sounds like a nightmare! Sorry you are having to deal with that. 😩 I hope you dad’s service was nice. I remember you saying you were going back for it. And yes, it is a pretty frightening time to be LGBTQ+. My heart really goes out to the younger ones who are just getting started in life and having to deal with this once again. 🥲
Wow that's fun ❤❤❤😮😮😮
😄👍
Looks like a good time. I hope you're well and staying safe Steve
Thanks Chad and the same to you! :-)
Great video, I am surprised how big the Pride event is there in Sacramento. Looks like your brother was enjoying him self. Thanks for sharing.
Me too David. It was the largest one I’ve ever seen! And the parade went on for almost 2 hours. It was pretty awesome to see. 😄👍
Thx for sharing Steve! Really enjoyed watching all the fun. Your camera is so clear it's just like being there. Looks like the weather was fantastic.
Hi Perry, thanks for mentioning the clarity. A subscriber recently suggested that I change my frames per second from 30 to 60. I did and it really is much more clear. I’m glad that it is noticeable. You are the first want to mention it. 😄👍
Thanks for sharing Sacramento with us Steve. In another lifetime I lived about an hour or so west of there and have a few very fond memories of that neighborhood👍cheers……
Thanks for sharing. It’s such a small world. I’m glad this video brought back some fond memories. 😄👍
What a FUN day! I’ve never been to a Pride parade until now! So thank you so much! ❤🏳️🌈❤
Hi Donna, I’m glad you were able to come along with us virtually! 🏳️🌈😄👍
That look like so much fun! Here is my unsolicited recommendation for the noise in the hotels/motels: Loop quiet earplugs
I’ve tried earplugs many times, but they really hurt my ears and give me an earache so I’m not able to use them. 😩 I’m envious of people like you who can use them without any ear problems. Thanks for this suggestion Margie. 👍
Dig the old hearse in the parade. Happy Pride Month.
Lol, I know, right? 😳😄👍
Great video steve
Thanks Matt 👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve no problem sir
Sacramento beautiful city, I luv the festivities and parade; here in my home city we have lots of events for Pride month, whole month of June parade, concerts, dinners, street fairs, family events, it all began with City Hall raising the pride flag ceremony May 31, we are in full swing this month with festivities 🌈♥️
I agree Cath, Sacramento is an amazing city. You are lucky to live there! :-)
@@theretiredlifewithsteve I count my blessings to have a government that embraces folks from all walks of life, acceptance, safety, equality, race, religion, orientation, some parts of the world where its not I hope that there would be change to have inclusion.
IHappy Pride Month Steve, to you and Jim and Mason!🤗🌈 Wow! A motel refrigerator with a light! Seldom see that , it must be a feature with Quality Inn. Motel 6 over the years was always been our favorite when traveling and a few times experienced an entrance/exit onto an indoor corridor plus a door out to parking lot. Happy Trails! 😊 I'm editing this so I can say that I enjoyed the Gay Pride Parade! So much variety, creativity and fun, everyone looked like they were living the moment! Steve...thanks for sharing and republican or not your brother is cool!👍
Thanks Catherine, that’s interesting to hear about your experience with motel 6. They seem to be so different, depending on the city and location. Are used to only stay in motel 6s but now I prefer Super 8 whenever I can find them. They usually are the same price or just a little bit more and are almost always a lot better. Same with quality Inn. Glad you enjoyed the video. It really was an awesome day. And my brother is pretty cool, for a Republican lol! 😄😄
awesome parade 🎉 Happy Pride 🏳️🌈

Hi Deborah, The entire weekend was pretty awesome. And I couldn’t believe it when that plate arrived with so much bacon! 😳 I have very little meat, but once in a while if I go out for breakfast I like to have a couple of strips of bacon. I wasn’t expecting half the pig on my plate lol! 😆👍
I’d love the architecture in the neighborhood that you guys were in. Also, the street art was beautiful. The green mural, gorgeous! Love the history of the tower Café. That’s interesting and pretty atmosphere! Loved the parade! I was grooving to the music🤣❤️. I also have conservative siblings. Out of six siblings, only me and my little brother (he’s 50🤣) are not Republican. My sister, though she is a Republican, she has been known to write in and not vote down party lines. It looks like everybody had a great time! And, did I see your brother kinda grooving to the music? Love it! That coulda been good editing, too. 😆. Great video. 🌈✨❤️✌🏼
Thanks Carla, your family sounds very much like mine. Everyone in my family is republican except for me lol! 😳🤪 it is such a beautiful town and it was a beautiful event and weekend. Thanks, as always, for watching and for sharing. 😄👍

Hi Gregg, I know right? I think you have to be a pretty sad person not to love gay parades and drag queens! 😄👍
The houses were so pretty.

It's one thing to be a "Republican" (tolerable), it's a completely different thing to be a "Trumpublican" (zero tolerance). Trump = Hate / To be honest, you Steve are a much happier person than is your brother. Good for you! Enjoyed 'most' of this upload. Happy pride!!! -oxO( 🏳️🌈 )Oxo-

Hi Maria, that would have been fun. You live in an awesome city. 😄👍
Tower theater Tower Cafe love.
Happy Pride Steve 🌈🌈🌈 its nice that your brother went to celebrate with you. When is the Pride parade in Palm springs????
Hi Lori, because of the summer heat, we don’t celebrate pride here in Palm Springs until the first weekend of November. And even that it’s usually still pretty hot lol! 😎👍
So nice to be able to spend time at PRIDE with family and friends, I have actually had people ask me if they can come along to a parade or festival. What a beautiful outdoor cafe to share a meal! And who doesn’t love a parade? Based on my knowledge, a lot of single female travelers will not book a motel/hotel with exterior door access for security reasons and prefer interior hallway properties with locked doors on both ends. They just don’t feel safe. Glad you all had a such good time at the festivities. ❤️ Paul
Eyeball, I’ve heard that too about this type of hotel. It does seem a lot more secure and safe, but for some reason they are just so much louder and I’m never able to sleep in them. I was very pleasantly surprised this time. 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve It’s my understanding that Marriott with it’s 30+ brands in the process of selling off their exterior door properties for the security and safety of their guests.
🔆
I was surprised that Mason did not join you ! That was a fun video but I think Minnesota's is even larger. I have not been there for several years and perhaps it's not as large anymore.
Hi Connie, maybe Mason will be able to come to the next one. I know Minnesota has a huge LGBTQ Community, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all. The Sacramento parade was almost 2 hours long. I only showed the highlights, because I didn’t think anyone would sit through a two hour video lol! 😄👍
Hey Steve, great video as always! I don't have a preference for interior or exterior hotels. Exterior makes for an easier walk to the car, but there can be noisy people by their cars. Interior can be quieter if people are behaved, and I think it keeps the rooms cleaner overall, but harder to come and go.
Does your scalp get oily or greasy if you don't use shampoo?
Hi Corey, very true about the hotels. They both have their pluses and minuses. Yes, my face and scalp get very oily. I use a face scrub on my face and also on the top of my head lol. 😄👍
Cool party
Thanks for sharing your trip to this huge Pride fest and parade Steve. Looked like a fun time. I've never been to one. Isn't Palm Springs Pride celebrations in November?
Hi Eddy, yes, Palm Springs Pride is held here the first weekend of November because it’s a lot cooler here in the fall. 😎👍
Motel 6 should have a room with a microwave and fridge but you have to ask for it.
It depends on each one. I worked at a Motel 6 in the housekeeping area and they had a room with a microwave and fridge but they didn't go out of the way to let people know about it unless they asked.
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that.
I've never heard of Motel 7. :-)

@@theretiredlifewithsteve it never does here in the summer
I must say, this is way more reasonable than our San Francisco Gay Pride parade and entire weekend. You are, like literally, smashed together like sardines. Ya know, I used to be a Republican as well, but that was back in the day where it was more about fiscal issues, and very much about freedom, keeping "Big Brother" out of your business and your bed. It wasn't about telling others how they should or should't live, and not approving of anyone who didn't think or behave like you do. You know, you can still go out and meet other people from all walks of life and enjoy your differences. My parents (typical conservative family) would say, at your brothers age he should be married, because what he's doing is called "living in sin", so in a way, you and Jim have more "traditional values" than your brother does! Personally, I don't even see the Republican Party today as being "Conservative" at all. But that's enough politics! Back to the celebrations!
Hi Derek, i’ve been visiting in San Francisco since I was a teenager and for some reason I still have never made it up for pride weekend. I was thinking about coming up in a couple of weeks, but I’m not sure I wanna make that trip again. It would be fun to finally see it though. Sacramento pride was so easy and so fun. We parked for free just a few blocks from the capital building and the entire experience was very pleasant. I’m guessing that trying to find parking in San Francisco for pride will not be so easy lol. I remember when living in sin was a very big thing! 😳 I didn’t even think about that regarding my brother. That’s so true and so hilarious lol! 😆 I think my brother is also having second thoughts about being a Republican for the same reasons you mention. It’s unbelievably shocking to see the republican party turn into the anti-democracy and anti-freedom party! 😩🥲
I'm gay and a Republican. We do actually exist 😊. Not a Trump supporter much anymore.
I do not do gay pride stuff though. At 53 almost, I've never understood the point.
Glad y'all had fun though Steve! 😊
--Your friend Spencer in Ky. 💜
Hi Spencer, my brother is no longer a Trump supporter either. I understand that some people really do not like large crowds like that, but for me the point is celebrating hard one freedoms just to exist. But I love all parades. I don’t discriminate lol! 😄👍
Wow, that’s amazing he would go! I would definitely NOT be going to a Trump rally!! 😡
Me either.....ever!
I don’t think he would go to a Trump rally either. He’s conservative but not a an extremist like Trump‘s followers. 👍
Who needs to hear about sharks and batteries 🤣. I wouldn’t go to a Trump rally either.
I don't think the parade was about Trump
I went to our pride on Saturday and it was so hot. It was like 99° with the humidity 97%
Hallways are hot and noise
Who are the people in your gayberhood?
Not sure what you mean?
I've never been to a pride parade. I'm 69.
Living in a small Michigan town why would I want to put myself through it. Unless ya live in huge gay areas like you it's not worth the hassle
Hi Mark, they can be very inspiring and a lot of fun, whether you are gay or straight. I really enjoy large crowds like this, but I know it’s definitely not for everyone. 😄👍
Why do you think that no straight conservative people would support the rights for gays? I know a lot who do because they have someone in their family that is gay and everyone should have equal rights. Please don't think otherwise.
Hi Jose, if you read some of the comments here you’ll see that quite a few gay people have conservative and republican family members who have rejected them and chosen politics over their own flesh and blood. But you are right, there are many decent and caring conservatives and Republicans, like my brother who do support their family members. We are the lucky ones. Unfortunately not everyone is so lucky. Thanks for sharing that. 😄👍
Tulare - Too-lair-ee . 🙂
Thanks, I don’t think I’ve ever pronounced a persons name or city name correctly the first time lol! 😂
Do you approve of males fighting in female sports. Today a Italian 25 year old female boxer at the Olympics just lost in 46 seconds to a male boxer. All that hard work gone
I guess it’s up to the people in the sport themselves to decide.
@@theretiredlifewithsteve well 2 females in the Olympics had to quit as they had to fight a male. All that hard work for nothing. It was heartbreaking.
Isn't Pride one of the 7 Deadly Sins ?
Lol, only if you believe in the concept of sin! 😳🤪
All the love ends as soon as a Gay person knows I support Trumps policies.
Hi Mark, I’m sure you understand why.
