So cool how Ken Squire was actually directing the cameras on the final lap. Apparently after Cale and Donnies crash, the producers in the truck had lost track of where Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip were! Great save by Ken Squire. 👍👍
I love the King so much, because Waltrip is doing everything he can to pass him and the King does not block or move the car in any way other than just straight running his line. What a badass.
Strange hearing them talk about "the kid from North Carolina" Dale Earnhardt. I grew up in the 90's and 2000's in NC when Dale was an almost mythical figure.
A nice juxtaposition when compared to what Ken said during Jeff Gordon's first Daytona 500 "The kid who blew them away on Thursday storms into lead in Turn 3"
This race brought NASCAR to the rest of the country. Within 10 yrs, corporations had taken it over. It was no longer a fun family racing life. I do miss this time!
That's why he's called "The King" of NASCAR racing folks. Much of what NASCAR is today was built off the back of Richard Petty ( and a few of the other greats like Pearson, Roberts, Earnhart ect...). He'll never buy a drink in any Bostonian lounge I see him in!!

Nascar in the 70's was the most exciting!

The first Daytona 500 telecast on CBS
think a few Gators got knocked around in the infield swamplands during the spinouts
Donnie was at fault easily. what was Cale to do? drive in the grass?
Hitting him the first time was right on. However, I think had Cale stayed straight instead of hitting him the second time, he would have passed him.
"This kid Earnhardt"
i seen richards car in a museum near seattle called the meet super cool
As of 2019 its been 40 years since that happened
Great math skills! Time flies :D
Clearly Cale was going to win the race. The Allison mentality of blocking cost Cale the victory

Let’s not forget about Curtis Turner and Tim Flock.

DW's team radio
Automobile racing as an entertainment option is truly dead.
Is it me or is Allison's car ....ummmm, cosmetically challenged? Looks like it should be going round a dirt track.....at best.
He had a fender bender earlier in the race...
Back before nascar went WOKE
