I remember that day. I'm not a sports fan. But, my cousin's boyfriend at the time was working on converting a car for the summer demolition derby. I went back and forth between watching him work on the car and checking out the race to keep him updated. The wreck didn't seem that bad when it happened (especially considering Tony Stewart's wreck during the race). But, once no one was mentioning Dale Earnhardt until the announcement of his death seemed troubling. You never know when your time is up.

I was standing at the fence right in front of the whole wreck unbelievable, God bless Richard Petty 🙏

This event encapsulated both the best and worst of life in America. What you see here is nepotism at the highest level. Everyone at nascar is the son, or nephew, or brother of someone important within the nascar organization. Here you see a hall of fame driver essentially trying to hand a win to his son to try and boost his career. Jr has been groomed for this moment his whole life and while he might have become a skilled driver through all the advantages and training he had in his life, he's only really there because of who his dad was. Its a hereditary monarchy, which goes against everything america set out to be. On the other hand, its also a parent that just wants the best for his son. What dad doesn't want to see his son succeed and even surpass him.

We rode past when this happened I still remember this 😢
