    Richard Petty wins his 7th and final Daytona 500. The energy crisis throughout the 70's led Detroit to manufacture more compact cars and following their lead NASCAR decided to mandate a 110-inch wheel base for the 1981 season (as opposed to the 115-inch wheel base from previous years). The downsized cars were much more unstable at high speeds and both John Anderson and Connie Sailer flipped during their qualifying races. NASCAR decided to institute larger spoilers for the 500 to help keep the cars planted onto the track. Bobby Allison led 117 but the larger spoiler was pushing a bigger pocket of air behind the cars and increased the effects of the draft. This allowed his competition to remain close and with just 24 laps to go, Richard Petty gambles and takes only fuel on his final pitstop to get himself out infront of the field and hold off Allison for the win.
    Time of race: 2:56:50
    Average Speed: 169.651 mph
    Pole Speed: 194.624 mph
    Cautions: 4 for 18 laps
    Margin of Victory: 3.5 sec
    Attendance: 130,000
    Purse: $90,575

    Richard petty took the 500 in every way imaginable. Domination some years. Luck in 79. And a strategy call

    1981. One of my favourite Daytona 500 of all time apart from many others.

    In 1981, NASCAR started clamping down on the model years of cars entered... No more 2 or 3 year old discontinued body styles or models of cars... Everything HAD to be current now - a racing version of whatever Detroit was producing at the time...

      Is that why they made a big deal about Bobby Alison's Pontiac? I looked and searched why they tried to say his car was illegal but can't find why

    Didn’t change the tires? I call BS on the rubber compound. Love Richard though! I don’t think anyone is disappointed that he has Daytona 500 wins. Maybe Bobby. Who knows what would’ve happened had Waddell Wilson not missed the fuel mileage.

    My best NASCAR story: watched this race on TV with my girlfriend. We drank wine coolers and she was really into racing. After the race she led me to my room and she became my first. What a day!

    It's so interesting how the cars raced so spread out and to the outside compared to racing between the 90's and now. Is it something to do with new regulations or restrictor plates today that make them drive in those tight packs?

    • @amp88trip
      @amp88trip Před 9 lety +1

      That's almost all due to the effects of the restrictor plate. (Which is completely necessary, as cars would be going way to fast without them)

    • @pault.backes7565
      @pault.backes7565 Před 8 lety

      +Thomas Goris Except back then, they didn't use restrictor plates in the Daytona 500. Those came in the 1988 race.
