The thing I've learned about cars in the 45 yrs I've been in the trade is it really doesn't matter what you buy, it's a crap shoot whether it's going to be good or bad. I spent 15 yrs working at dealerships, and found that the same year, make, model of car/truck/van, one will be truoble free, and the next one will be nothing but trouble.
I agree that the ones built in the US and Canada are higher quality, but still, there can be ones built with the wrong parts in the wrong day on the wrong assembly line.
Do the maintenance early, do it with quality parts, and, depending on where you live, have it rust proofed annually.

Elon could have been producing EVs for the masses, starting at ~$20k way back when. Of course his first model I think cost like $60k and that is in dollars 10 years ago. He does what all shrewd businessmen do, take advantage of people that don't know any better. When the first flat screen TVs came out they were $10k. Today you can get one for $400, same size. Same thing will happen with Teslas. Went you want the latest thing you have to pay a pretty penny, that's how it works. I'm ok with a 4 cylinder engine and 4 speed transmission, tried and true technology that will last a lot longer then any Tesla, once that battery starts to loose cells, who's going to pay $20k to replace a battery on a car that's worth $15k? Nobody, the "green car" will be scrapped and the internal combustion engine car keeps going down the road.

You will need a tech to reprogram the stop start for the battery to get a full charge instead of using 70 percent.

On trips, especially in big cities I'll switch back to Standard mode, figuring I might get into a situation where I wouldn't mind leaving a little more rubber on the road in lieu of kissing bumpers with a vehicle closing too quickly from behind. I've not bought the $2,000 performance option. I suspect I'll never need that much boost, and not sure I'd ever really want that extra HP, but if I ever change my mind, $2000 for another 100 horses ain't a bad deal at all.

Original owner was a grandma church lady named Dorothy. She drove it three days a week, to her church and the grocery store. Repairs have been minimal. Two bigger ones were new fuel pump and sending unit, and wiring harness from the ECM to the motor. Most recent was a new fuel pump relay switch. Paint has faded, but still a super solid performer. Other common repairs, muffler, cat converter, brake pads and rotors, rear drums and brake shoes, tires and alternator. Frequent oil changes have kept the motor happy.

Maybe the NHTSA still has this but since I live in Canada, I don't think it will ever get me in trouble! It guess it doesn't record much information anyway, the speedometer cable doesn't go through it!!

Since 2006 every Volvo (at least up until Geely bought the company) has had a fuel driven extra heater fitted. No matter if the car was sold in Saudi Arabia or Sweden, South Africa or Canada the heater was there. If you wanted it to work you had to pay around 8000 SEK - about 750 USD - for them to download the software. So, what you’re describing isn’t as new as many might think.
