One of the long term affects of this that I have not seen discussed much is the harm done to Tesla's ability to attract the best talent. Tesla just fired an entire department that was inarguably the best in the industry. Why on earth would anyone who is high value talent want to go work for someone who has shown a total lack of appreciation for industry leading talent?
There is more to the firings than we on the outside can see. Elon is an impulsive child and if someone stands up to him, he throws the whole department under the bus.
100% . I work in the industry (not related to charging), and I know people who have worked there as well. Based on their expierences, and this latest example, I wouldnt consider working there at all. Layoffs are for sure part of the industry, but they are usually done somewhat logically, and there is some effort to maintain a positive company culture. From what I have heard, that has been horrible these last couple years at Tesla.

That is very true. I will never work for a company that thinks its technology workers are "fungible". That is a sure sign that those in charge do not understand technology.

As a Tesla customer, this was a stupid decision. The main reasons buying a Tesla was its charging network was expanding. So here in Australia, we are very thin on chargers.😢

I have been a follower and fan of Elon's work since 2010 which led me to defend many of his highly questionable decisions over the past 4 years. For those of us following from the beginning it was easy to look at his great early work and give him the benefit of many, many doubts believing that his goals were noble. I can no longer do so. Since the payout of the first huge compensation package his actions appear more ego driven and less (if at all) focused on the mission statement of Tesla. The world needed a mass produced truck at a reasonable price and he took enormous company resources to create a polarizing, impractical, expensive and extremely hard to produce product of his ego. He has now cancelled the affordable EV and vaporized the most successful charging roll out on the planet. As he maneuvers for more ownership of the company and massive compensation packages he cuts costs by eliminating the income of the working class employees and raises the prices to consumers. His actions and leadership no longer represent anything noble or remotely impressive. I anticipate it will become harder and harder for him to convince everyone he's the smartest person in the room as we witness his dissension into the simplest of human failures, greed and ego.

I’m just curious how demoralizing this must be for other Tesla employees. They must be wondering, am I next? Hard and passionate working for a person or company is not always well rewarded
Those who are actually good move on to other companies because they dont' have to put up with the bullsh. This is something that the CEO of GE Jack Welch did years ago - it killed them.

To be frank, this would just make me more hungry to work better and more intelligently. If I thought I was becoming a burden on the company, or I was coasting along in a job I could easily do every day without challenging every aspect of what I'm doing, then I probably deserve to be fired.
I work in a small company with many fellow employees who make obvious mistakes every day that cause untold overheads on the rest of us. If all those underperformers could be legally let go and we could take time to hire one or two new very good replacements, that would be very good for the company's future.
Terrible for those employees let go for sure... but that's life. Their loss is the gain of someone new who can do their jobs many times better.

Musk worked for free with a compensation package that only paid him if Tesla met certain goals. And the package was not for a salary, but Tesla stocks. When the agreement was made, Tesla stock was a tiny fraction of what the price is today. However, he did not get paid that compensation package, in spite of meeting the goals.
So, he has now worked for how long for free?

If you only look at it from the perspective of a person trying to crazily reduce expenditure, like Argentina's president, you would remove the one's that cost the most, the one at the top cost Tesla the most. I think the maintenance technicians are fine, at-least, for now.

I owned three Model S's in the past. I watched the company go from customer-first to stockholder-first-and-only. I was tempted to order my new photovoltaic system from Tesla until this news came about and it reminded me why that was a stupid idea. You just never know when Mr. Mercurial Musk is going to pull support and rip you, the customer, off.
I think the reason he let go of the entire team was to demonstrate his power. Rebecca Tinucci was probably told to lay off a chunk of her team, the team that has continued to out-perform as far as everyone can tell, and she resisted. I think Musk decided to just wipe them all out as a demonstration to the other Tesla executives: "Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction"
By the way, you know what no one has talked about? What about all of the service people that were laid off? Tesla doesn't have enough service centers nor techs to service the cars they have out right now, and they made it just that much harder to get your car serviced into the future.

This is either a colossal mistake or there are issues that are known only a few people at Tesla.
I think a large part of this was to send a message internally at Tesla (which seems like a big gamble), but there were also a lot of products teased by Tesla for release in the second half of last year that never came to fruition. I think this is a few different things in one: A message internally for layoffs, response to the market towards EVs/belt tightening and prioritize a focus on delivering products again. We’ll see if this works, or if they also end up rehiring some people, but this has happened at Tesla before just not so publicly or extremely to this team specifically. I’m not sure I’m even optimistic looking forward, but any Tesla news is always big news, so my guess is this getting blown out of proportion. Coincidentally Tesla is still probably in the best position to respond and be fine within 6 months so overall changes might not be noticed in the end to the consumer (other than maybe total number of new location roll outs).
When they came out with the new standard that was their death nail. The new Superchargers are all the tech that's needed for some time. They don't need a team to role out the tech they already have. That, and BEVs are on a level streak right now, not a lot of exponential growth is going to happen for a few years.
@@anydaynow01 Can you explain what you mean about them rolling out their new standard? My understanding is that recently, every single major car company in North America, including GM, and Ford, have agreed to make the Tesla charging port as the "North American Standard" charging plug. One company refused, but they won't be able to refuse.
That means all the cars in North America made in the future, will have the Tesla charger compatibility. So Tesla already WON the game. They won. They have all the companies under their dominion, because they are the owners of the "North American Standard" charging port now. It has even been approved by SAE, and will be an official SAE standard.
I am not an expert on these terms, or the politics, or monies involved, but my point is, Tesla didn't need any major new innovations right now, and they can afford to fire ALL of their charging team. Provided that their software can be maintained, they already have control (indirectly) of the entire charging grid in North America.
I also saw a vision (just a wild guess and speculation on my part) that Tesla will control the ENTIRE POWER GRID in America in the future. This is because Tesla will be the only company capable of replacing the entire power grid (for obvious reasons).
I think one inside issue was reluctance by the SC group to quota firing.

Teslas supercharger network is what really sets them apart. So seamless. Without it they wouldnt have gotten where they are today...

I was accepted for a service advisor position but I declined it because I had other goals after sending my application. Now, everyone at the service center who told me I should really consider taking this opportunity to work for Tesla has left. When I brought my Model Y in for service, they were all gone. LOL. I wonder if I would have been fired too if I had accepted the job four months ago, before these recent layoffs.
My local service center cleaned house as well. People who had been there since day 1 as well.
Hi, I worked as a contractor for a while in the UK and this is how businesses view contractors. You are short term, no job security, less entitlements and you have a dead date from the start. You are also the first to go if anything happens which could be the driver for this in reducing costs.

I bought my first EV 3 years ago. My wise wife said "anything but Tesla". I did some digging and agreed, for a combination of reasons, but Elon was a big one. An interesting irony is that I'd just listened to the Harvard Business Review article on "How Bad Leaders Get Worse over Time". I thought about Elon in listening to that article.

@@PaulWilliams14 I believe that it was more of a case that the big charging network players came to Tesla. They told Tesla that they will adopt NACS and data/software in return for Tesla slowing the expansion of their Supercharger network.

@@Zupdood2 look at other top comments or news articles or even just elons own words where he points out these actions were taken so other executives take his words that he wants 10% of all employes in all teams fired. He got pushback from a strong female leader of supercharger team, his little ego felt hurt, so he took actions in the name of his own ego, tesla be damned. I’ve followed tesla long enough to know that elon doesnt always work in Tesla’s best interests.. especially over last couple of years.

I agree with commenters who point out that Tesla is proving to be an unreliable business partner. It sounds like this layoff decision was hasty and not thought out. Usually, layoffs at a company of this size are planned approx 3 months in advance from a variety of angles. The fact that bounce-back emails didn't even redirect recipients to an alternate Again, that should have been planned in advance.

I was on the fence about getting the CCS retrofit for my 2019 Model 3. I'm definitely going to do it now.
Elon did say that Tesla stock would be worth zero if they didn't complete FSD. By wiping out departments such as supercharging he can make true on his promise of value destruction.

Well, as an european, I’m happy that here Tesla got to adapt to the CCS2 standard, and not the whole industry to Teslas standard.
Here, all the cars, except the oldest ones (who use Type 3 or CHAdeMO, for instance), are CCS2, including Tesla, and everyone can charge on none-Tesla chargers. To put it in other words: unlike in the US, in Europe, Tesla doesn’t rule anything.

There are times when the EU bureaucracy is overbearing or gets it wrong ... and there are times when the EU bureaucracy gets it right, the decision to standardise CCS2 being one of them. (USB-C was another one.)
Hard to say if that would have even mattered here in the US. The other operators are pretty terrible in comparison. It's possible if everyone agreed to use either Tesla or CCS at the very start, things would be different, but hard to say. America's general reluctance to EV's is the real killer I feel. Tesla should have open sourced their connection from the beginning.
It's one of the downsides to being first at things. Once you create something (Tesla creating the 1st mass market connector in this case) it can be hard to change. Similar to our home power grid, we started at 120V for outlets as it was good enough, and our stubbornness to change before it's too late is not a good trait for progression.
I wish we would have ditched 120V right away and at the very least went with just the 240V phase to phase.
CCS2 is a shitty plug though, could be designed so much better and smaller
Do we know if the NACS pacts with other automakers require them to buy Tesla charger and add new locations and stations?

Whatever the merits of the decision, the communications strategy around an issue that impacts the entire industry, including other automobile companies, has been abysmal.
I think the implications may be entirely beyond the ken of the person who made the decision.
Hi, you just dropped the company image with all the companies you deal with.
In the video it was mentioned that phone calls just go unanswered I suspect that is because they are gone and no hand over, if the whole department was cut then this is what you would expect.
So Elon is Ok and secure all others are not and as customers you should bear this in mind.

I thought the reason was obvious. Supercharging isn't a money maker. It was needed to sell cars originally but new stations won't sell more cars at this point. Elon needs money for his Twitter money pit. He just got snubbed on a multi-billion dollar compensation plan from Tesla. He needs Tesla stock to go up. I think if he doesn't get the next compensation plan, he's making sure the Tesla stock goes up to as high as he can go beforehand. That will allow him to either 1) if compensation is not approved, sell much of his stock and disinvest his interested in Tesla and offshoot into separate private companies . 2) if compensation is approved, then he'll have the money he needs and more importantly more control over Tesla.
Right, it's not a moneymaker.
Unless youre the guy whos developed technology and positioned yourself at the forefront and have major car manufacturers wanting to pay you to allow their customers to be able to use that technology...by the millions...all day ever day.

From my point of view, it's a wrong decision. I think it's more useful to have 5 diferents stations in the nearby with 10 Charging points, rather than having only a 1 massive 50 Charging points station... What do you think ?

Here in Canada, if there were one or two fast-charge points at every Tim Horton's coffee shop, we would not be having discussions about range anxiety ...
EV charging math won't work out for decades to come. It takes 10 times as many charging "pumps" to move people through a site as it does gas pumps. That's impossibly expensive. Nobody wanted to listen to states like Wyoming, who said EVs will never be usable in their state for decades, as they just don't have the range.

I’m feeling better about selling all my Tesla shares a few weeks ago. Elon did pretty well with the earnings call but firing the whole supercharging team proves Elon has lost his mind. I love my Model 3, Tesla Solar and 3 Power Walls, but I fear for the future of the company with Elon’s recent actions. I hope things will turn around and that Tesla will have a bright future .

Mom's signing a lease on a PHEV tomorrow, hoping that by the time its up shareholders will have sued to remove Musk or the network will be open to other EVs. After firing the whole SuperCharger team the first scenario seems more realistic than the second.

I think Tesla is building a reputation as an unreliable partner. If in doubt ask not only the OEM's that were joining the Tesla US standard connector but Hertz, Mexico and others. Just look at how he ended up with Twitter. The problem is Musk, and I say that and I am a Tesla stockholder, and his management style is perhaps great for start-ups but not for established companies that need a new vision. BTW, just this week bought an EV and it was not a Tesla.

I think the new supercharger in Los Gatos California in the bay area is a V4 supercharger. It has the longer cables and a screen for non teslas to pay and a magic doc. And its a much larger tower.

I’m adopting a wait and see plan. I haven’t suffered from a lack of superchargers in the 4 years I’ve owned the car. I mostly charge at home and had no issue in the 8000 km road trip I just took. I agree with the comments about other companies taking over the responsibility for the charging network. Why not? It must be a nightmare dealing with power companies. I know our province sometimes takes about a year to connect once the chargers are installed. The problem is the silence. We all love to fill the gap with assumptions. I would love to see modern charging stations with facilities and food stations and not have to pull into the back parking lot of some garage or mall after dark with no place to use the washroom. It’s the perfect time to make this change. I hope that’s what is happening.
I an surprised how well the CHAdeMO roll-out has been going in my local area. It was probably one of the larger reservations I had buying an aging Leaf (lost the format war twice over).
I may not run a Fortune 500 company, so maybe I’m missing the business perspective here, but as a consumer and shareholder of Tesla… this move makes me nervous.
Arguably EVs biggest hurdle to adoption is getting consumers over the range anxiety fear. Tesla’s charging network helps separate them from competitors and gets people comfortable with overcoming range anxiety… so I find it confusing that Tesla would entirely eliminate the team that directly supports their company mission of EV adoption

Last month, I did an 8,000-mile road trip and saw sites I visited had at least 3 open lanes. In the last 6 months I did go to a small location I knew about that was busy, the car directed me to an other location 2 miles away that was less than half full. Tesla was opening chargers faster than traffic demanded in a lot of locations. We are producing chargers at a given rate, and let's see if we can find places to install them.

I have no idea what Elon is thinking. My guess is the costs for building out new sites were skyrocketing and/or he wasn't satisfied with progress on V4. Either way, the potential consequences of this decision cant just be ignored. It makes a lot of people nervous when something like this happens. Hopefully those that are left can develop a plan, but thats a lot of brainpower missing.

I said it elsewhere but i think he's choosing to sacrifice the speed of Supercharger growth in order to (as he announced on the earnings call) fast track the robotaxi/25k car rollout. I don't think it actually has almost anything to do with the Supercharger network/V4 itself. I think Elon thinks the Supercharger network as is, is so far enough ahead in terms of location coverage that it's ok to put it on pause to focus on what he thinks (due to investor and Wall Street pressure) is the more important thing for Tesla to focus on largely just so the "here's how many cars we sold this Quarter" and thus the stock price numbers can go up. Typical short term growth/profit over long term growth/betterment.

@@bobqzzi I never said they are products that are released. However they both are things Elon is hyper focused on trying to bring to market. He quite literally said so in the most recent earnings call (that you clearly didn't listen to). They are planning to move up the release by a few months to a year by using existing production lines and a less different version of the platform to get the 25k car/robotaxi (same platform) to be out sooner than they initially planned for. It's really not that difficult to see how Elon is prioritizing trying to make that real and is using the money it takes to keep Supercharger employees paid and network expanding to try to do it. It's fucking stupid but that's what's clearly happening. Has nothing to do with whether or not you think they're real things or not. Elon wants them to be and that's what this pivot is for.
With upgrading they may not only mean faster and more chargers, but also things like, roofs, lights, benches, vending machines, etc…

I had to deal with a few V2 chargers in Arkansas for the recent eclipse and it was pretty painful to be pulling 75 kW when I could be getting 250 kW at a V3. I'd take a V3/V4 with fewer amenities (as long as there's at least a bathroom somewhere around) than a V2 with amazing amenities. Having more sites also helps keep you in the optimal part of the charging curve.

The newest Tesla charger design is head and shoulders above what is needed for quite some time, this was a pretty smart move since all they have to do is rinse and repeat what they have been doing for the past decade for expanding their charging network. The big thing is chargers which are idle, which is a lot, why should they make more?

Rumor is that only Version 3 production was effected and that since the development of the Version 4 cabinets is finally completed, there’s no longer any need to keep the Version3 side of the business open. That would mean any Version 3 sites that weren’t already in process would be canceled in favor of Version 4 installations. We’ll see.

Considering Supercharging has almost doubled in cost since 2019, I'd say yes they are making money from them. In some areas it costs as mush as gas to charge a Tesla at a Supercharger station when going on a trip.

This is what I'm wondering, they are coming out with the semi solid state batteries in China, if that actually works well superchargers may not be as necessary long term.

I work in the labor employment space. We do a lot of analyses of layoffs conducted by large companies, including those in the tech sectors. Several companies in the tech sector regularly lay off a chunk of their workforce and then rehire them later to some degree. This may be the case with Tesla. Of course, I'm only speculating and I have zero inside information on Tesla.
Yeah, it's possible that Elon is planning on letting them be desperate for a while, then hiring them back for less money.
You make an interesting point, remember when inflation was at its peak? And people were just freaking out about a crash (the one that never arrived) and Amazon, Snap, meta, and others were downsizing which people took as a shortage in the labor market not a reduction of exaggerated hiring during COVID. It all boils down to slow sales of all EVs, $ is getting tight at Tesla, some automakers have already bailed out. People just don't want them, too many issues especially no national electrical grid infrastructure to support this effort. The cart came before the horse on this effort. I love EV technology as a original owner of a GE Elektrak in the 70s, would have thought by now we would have power infrastructure to support the charging system.
It's true there are plenty of articles to support the drop of EV sales. Automakers like GM and Ford have slowed production of EV's or dropped EV production completely. Tesla is not the only one affected by the lack of interest or the confusing market when it comes to EV's.

for sure that would be a sweet recovery, but that first assumes that collective of OEM's were truthful about their intent and not BS-ing you. as you now see, there was A LOT of baked in problems with pulling off such a collaboration. but mind you even IF they were sincere...? (and that's one big "IF") the nationwide softening of EV sales surely puts these "grand plans" on the back burner in the near term.
To me, SuperChargers management & buildout is like the "hotel" business. What is the current 'occupancy rate', trend, and future look like from a usage perspective? Is there a plan that changes the supercharger infrastructure? Is the EV Sales trend really dropping that a business would quit building infrastructure long enough to fire the entire team? Messaging from Tesla seems to be a bigger failure to me than the change they made.
It is not about sales, it is about NACS coming thru, so they do not longer need to play good samaritans providing excellent(sic) service, superior(sic) technology.

Maybe from a maintenance point of view it's better to keep building out existing sites. Also, larger sites can support a model similar to gas stations where they sell food and drinks at the site.

As an internal combustion vehicle user looking from the outside of the EV space, this has just helped affirm my decision to wait on making any switch in the near future. For mass adoption of EVs you need to be competitive with the accessibility and convenience of gas stations, and I think this decision is a huge step backwards from that goal.
